Text 1 预约

W: Hello, Dr. Johnson. I wonder if I could make an appointment

with you at 9:00 a.m.?

M: Sorry, I’ll have an important meeting then.

Text 2 推荐小说

W: This novel is really well-written and impressive. Have you

read it before?

M: Yes. But I didn’t finish it. There is little attraction to me.

Text 3 与室友相处

W: James, how are you getting along with your new roommate?

M: Could you introduce a friend or find another apartment to

me? I’m going to be crazy with such a roommate!

Text 4 约看电影

W: Would you like to go to the cinema with me this Friday

evening, honey?

M: I can’t, I’m afraid. I have to work until very late because I

have an important report to make this Saturday morning.

W: What about Sunday, then? Hopefully you are not busy.

M: Yes, Sunday will be OK.

Text 5 入住宾馆

W: Your room is 208 and here’s your key, sir. The checkout time

is 12 noon.

M: Okay. When is the dining hall open?

W: Food is served during the following periods: 7:00 a.m. - 8:30

a.m., 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. You

can come at your convenience.

Text 6 挑选衬衫

W: Good morning. I’d like to buy a shirt for my husband.

M: Of course, madam. These are the latest fashion. How about

the black one?

W: My husband doesn’t like dark colors. ⑥He prefers light ones.

M: What about these two shirts, the white one and the light blue

one?

W: The white one looks pretty good. I’ll take it. Er ... What if it

doesn’t fit?

M: ⑦Well, in that case you can return it within two days and get

your money back or you can change it within seven days for

free.

W: Sounds good.

Text 7 休息不好

M: Hi, you look pale. What’s wrong?

W: ⑧I can’t sleep well at night lately.

M: What’s the matter?

W: Each night I go to bed early. But with my roommates talking

and laughing so loudly, I just can’t fall asleep. They often

watch videos or play games until midnight.

M: I understand. ⑨I used to live in a room with three classmates.

It was great when we went out on weekends and had a good

time together. But sometimes when I wanted to sleep, they

still kept talking and laughing, which was really terrible.

W: Oh, really? How did you solve the problem?

M: I had a talk with them and they changed a lot. After that they

seldom did that. I suggest you have a try.

W: You are right. Maybe I’ll do that.

Text 8 新自行车

M: Hi, Alice! I like the color of your new bike. It looks pretty

good.

W: I just bought it yesterday. There were many colors to choose,

such as black, yellow, and green, ⑩but I like blue best.

M: It’s really cool! Can I have a try?

W: Sure. But please remember to ride on the right.

M: Oh, I still haven’t got used to riding on the right. You know,

⑪in my country, we drive, ride and walk on the left.

W: Well, it might be dangerous if you do so here in China and

it’s against the traffic laws.

M: Yes, I see. So many people prefer to travel by bike here.

W: You see, ⑫it is convenient to go everywhere riding a bike.

You can see people cycling around every corner in this city.

M: And it is also friendly to the environment.

W: Quite right. Although you don’t need a driving license, you

must obey the traffic rules. And always remember to ride on

the right of the road. You must always pay attention to the

rushing cars and the people on the street. Besides, do not let

anyone sit at the back. It is forbidden.

M: That’s necessary for our safety.

M: The closest one is on 8th Street, but I’m afraid it’s probably

closed now.

W: But where can I get the things I need?

M: ⑭Well, you can go down to 12th Street. The stores in that

area usually stay open till midnight and some of them even

keep open 24 hours a day.

W: Can I take a bus to get there?

M: Yes, but that might take about 45 minutes. ⑮You’d better

take a taxi.

W: Is it expensive to take a taxi?

M: No, actually, ⑯it’s only about 10 dollars, I think. But it is

worth the money.

Text 10 推荐电影

W: Hi everyone, this is RJ here with another movie review.

Today, I’m going to talk about the latest film from director

Thomas Paul Sanders, The Rejects. Let me start with the

good. This is a beautiful movie. There are some great shots,

and the colors were wonderful on the big screen. The acting

was also excellent. Tony Morris gives the performance of his

career, and ⑰Linda Perkins is fantastic in a supporting role

as his sick mother. I also loved the ending. I won’t ruin it for

you, but I thought it wrapped everything up nicely and in a

satisfying way.

Now, let’s move on to the not so good. ⑱First, I’ve got to

mention the length, which is the most disappointing to me.

⑲I can think of half a dozen scenes that could have been cut

without issue to make the film more attractive. Second, the

music in this film is not memorable. Sanders usually has great

music in his films, so this was a bit of disappointment for me.

Last, I couldn’t stand Mick Walters’s character. I don’t know

why — he just annoyed me. All in all, ⑳I’d recommend The

Rejects for any Sanders fans or anyone who wants to watch a

feel-good drama.

stay at home and have some rest.

Text 2 交通堵塞

M: Why have you stopped my car, officer? Is there anything wrong?

W: Sorry, sir. A big stone rolled down and blocked the road. So

you have to wait some time or turn back.

Text 3 忘记名字

M: Hello, Maria. It was great meeting you again. I still remember

the speech you delivered at the conference last Saturday.

W: Me too. Well, er ... I know it’s a little embarrassing ... but

your name has just slipped my mind. I’m terribly sorry.

Text 4 去火车站

W: Good morning, sir. Where are you going?

M: The railway station. I have to catch the 9 o’clock train.

W: No problem, sir. It’s only 8:00 now. We will be there in about

20 minutes, I promise.

Text 5 活动安排

W: Hello, Mike. Would you like a picnic with us tomorrow?

M: I’d like but I have to go to the library to review my lessons

for the coming final examination.

Text 6 谈论车况

M: ⑥Thanks for the ride.

W: ⑥No problem. Your house is on the way to mine.

M: Do you smell something?

W: No. Why?

M: When did you clean your car?

W: Last weekend. Are you saying my car smells bad?

M: No. ⑦It smells like soap in here.

W: The smell is probably from the cleaning products that I used.

But they smell like lemon not soap.

M: Hmm. That’s strange.

Text 7 度假安排

W: ⑧Ready for a fun day at the beach, dear?

M: What? You still want to go to the beach? Didn’t we just go

there last month?

W: Well, but not this month.

M: The weather report says it will rain today.

W: Oh, no! ⑨My plan was to go to the beach, not stay at home!

Look outside — it’s not raining now. See?

M: The weather report said it’s going to start raining by nine

o’clock.

W: Well, it’s 8:30 a.m., so obviously that’s wrong.

M: Oh really? Why don’t you have another look out of the

window?

W: What? It’s really raining? Come on! That’s not fair!

M: Looks like the forecast is right. It’s a pity that we can’t go

today. Maybe next month.

Text 8 线上消费

W: Are you shopping online again?

M: Yeah! There are so many good deals today!

W: How do you pay for what you buy online, anyway? Aren’t

you afraid to give out your credit card number?

M: Well, the website is secure, so no. But I do usually use a

payment system like PayPal for extra security. Hey! This

Invisible Machine T-shirt is only $20! ⑩Invisible Machine is

my favorite band!

W: Couldn’t you just buy the same shirt at the mall?

M: It’s cheaper online. Besides, buying online is more

convenient!

W: What about the shipping costs?

M: This website offers free shipping on orders over $30.

W: ⑪But the T-shirt’s only $20. You’re $10 short.

M: So I’ll also buy this Invisible Machine hat — it’s half off!

That comes to ... $35 after tax!

W: All right. ⑫Anyway I still wouldn’t buy anything online.

Text 9 打包搬家

W: Have you seen my brown shoes? I can’t find them anywhere.

M: Which box did you pack them in?

W: I’m pretty sure I put them in the box with my workout

clothes. Which one is that?

M: I just finished labeling all the boxes. ⑬It should be in the box

labeled “bedroom closet”. It looks like we’re almost done. Is

there anything else?

W: I took all the pictures off the walls, but we still have to wrap

them up. Did you take the bed sheets off the beds?

M: The bedding is all packed. I emptied out the dressers and

desks too.

W: Good. Hmm, what else? The AC ( 交流电 ) is off. Oh, ⑭before

we leave the room, we have to remember to lock all the

windows and check all the rooms last time. There’s still a

bunch of loose items in the living room we have to pack too.

M: Most of that is for the new apartment. There’s a box labeled

“new apartment”. I’ve already put the toilet paper, garbage

bags, and dish soap in it. Do you mind putting the rest of the

stuff on the list in there?

important way to begin.

Text 8 伦敦行

M: It has been a long time since I saw you last time. Where have

you been?

W: ⑪I went to London to enjoy myself with my friends.

M: How was your trip? Did you have a good time?

W: It was fun. We went to the British Museum and enjoyed the

grand Buckingham Palace as well as Tower Bridge outside.

They were really splendid!

M: I have been there once to attend a seminar, but I didn’t have

enough time to travel around. ⑫I only went to the British

Museum.

W: What a pity! You could have stayed longer. You can easily

find many good hotels in London.

M: Really? Any good suggestions?

W: We stayed at the Park Plaza Bridge. The room was large and

clean and it offered free drinks, fruits and snacks every day.

You can enjoy traditional British breakfast there. By the way,

how about your holiday?

M: I didn’t go out because I was preparing for my new job.

W: Sounds good. ⑬I have to gain work experience before I

graduate next year.

W: Yes. I am going to the downtown to have supper and then do

M: That sounds fun. How will you get there? You know there is

often a heavy traffic jam at this time every day.

W: I had planned to drive a car. ⑮But I have to quit because of

the heavy traffic jam. I am going there by subway.

M: Subway? The subway station is far away from here. You have

to take a bus or call a taxi to go there.

W: Right. That’s why I am in a hurry and wait for a taxi. By the

way, where are you going?

M: ⑭I am here to take a bus to the university. There is a bus stop

just near the university.

W: It might take longer. I think you need to take two buses to get

there.

M: Right. There is not a direct bus to the university.

W: That will be cheap. Can you roller-skate?

M: I hope you don’t mean I should roller-skate to the university.

W: No, just out of curiosity. Is roller-skating popular in America?

M: Yes. People often use roller-skates. There is even a specialized

path for it.

W: ⑯In Britain we can’t do that; the path is just for walking on.

M: I see.

W: ⑰My taxi is coming. I will ask the driver to drop you off

somewhere if you would like to go with me.

M: ⑰That would be wonderful. I will then only need to take one

bus. Thanks so much.

W: We all have fond memories of interacting with our

grandparents, especially when we were young. They often

have exciting life stories, good advice and sometimes

unexpected wisdom that can benefit us. ⑱At the Silver

Digital Talents event that was held on 2-3 March 2019 at

the National Library, more than 2,000 seniors learned the

power of using digital devices to create and share their

stories.

At the Silver Digital Talents event, each senior got to learn

different digital skills at three stations — from learning how

to take digital photos, record video shows of themselves to

include these interesting things to their e-book. They also

learned how to use digital pens to add finishing touches with

pictures, and were finally rewarded with the completion

of both a physical and digital copy of their very own

personalized e-book.

As energetic as e-books are, it is not the only way that seniors

with stories can share their thoughts and talents. ⑳Katherine

Chua, 67, wants to create films about wet markets in

Southeast Asia. She has a strong desire to share this unique

aspect of the area with the world, and ⑳the event taught her

some new skills which she can put to good use.

Beyond just creating e-books, ⑳others saw the benefits of

learning these new skills that will come in handy in their

daily lives. ⑲Mike Lockett, 63, and Risdiana, 46, are used

to taking only photos with their smartphones, but now

look forward to making use of the video function to record

important life moments. “We are not used to making videos,

but the workshop has familiarized us with it,” said Risdiana.

Lockett, a businessman, and felt the skills he learned could be

helpful in his business. He said he could see various uses for

video and photo taking, like for marketing and that instead

of having to pay someone else to do it, he would try to do it

himself.

bargain.

W: Wow! Can’t wait to try there! By the way, I remember you

months before it’s due. I am looking for someone to take over

my rented house. Would you be interested?

W: What kind of house is it?

M: It’s a one-bedroom flat.

W: Wonderful! I am exactly looking for a one-bedroom flat, so

⑭my friends can gather in a separated sitting area instead of

in my bedroom. Why do you want to move out?

M: My brother will come from China to study at King’s College

London. He will stay with me so I need to find some bigger

accommodation.

W: That’s great! Why will he live with you?

M: Um, he doesn’t want to live alone. He is afraid of not being

able to get used to life here. He can’t cook and can’t do his

own laundry.

W: ⑯But if he lives with you, he won’t learn to be independent.

Don’t you think so?

M: I know. ⑮I’ll teach him how to cook simple meals and wash

W: And manage his spending on both time and money. That’s

Text 10 演讲技巧

M: Public speaking is a frightening thing to people of all ages.

⑳There are several techniques you can learn to make it

possible not only to survive giving a speech but also to feel

confident doing it.

First, choose the right words for your audience. They need

to understand the words you choose to use. Your words also

need to be appropriate for the subject, so it is best to avoid

very informal words and expressions. You do not need to

make fun of the audience or try to be funny. Audiences can

sense insincerity, so be honest and say what you actually

believe, not just what you think the audience wants to hear.

This will enable you to speak with emotion and make your

speech more powerful.

Second, choose the speech structure that best suits your

situation, and write your speech accordingly. Pay attention

to your introduction. ⑱There are many types of strong

introductory techniques called “hooks”. These can be

anecdotes, surprising statements, or even doing something

unexpected or unusual. In your conclusion, the last thing

you do is tell the audience to do something: give a round of

applause, donate their time or phone their mother. A strong

beginning and ending will help the audience remember you

and your speech.

The most useful technique to avoid nervous body language is

to have a friend record a video of you speaking and watch it

several times. Look at what your hands are doing while you

are talking; they should be relaxed. Notice how you stand;

you should be straight and tall. Pay attention to your eye

contact. Do not stare at your notes, the ceiling or the floor.

⑲Use this technique several more times to make sure you

have avoided these bad habits before you give your speech.

Text 2 邮寄包裹

M: I need to mail this package to New York, please.

M: Yes. Bring coins for the washer and dryer or scan the QR

W: Is there any washing powder in the laundry room?

M: Yes, you have to pay for it or you can bring it yourself.

signs to the Customs and Immigration after you have picked

up your luggage.

M: What do I need to have out when I pass through Customs?

W: Make sure that your passport is out and that your Declarations

form is complete.

M: My seatmate here is from Thailand and is traveling through to

the UK. Does she need to clear Customs?

W: No. ⑨People who do not enter Switzerland don’t have to do

that. She needs to get aboard her next plane. Tell her to go

to the right and follow the directions. Her bags are already

routed through to their final destination.

M: ⑩Can we use the restrooms now?

W: Yes, there is one opposite over there especially for this area.

Text 8 送幼儿园

M: Hello Tommy, glad to see you. Come this way and I’ll show

M: Yes, I understand. It is quite common for children to be

nervous when in a new environment.

W: Take it easy, Tommy. There’s no need to cry!

M: Follow me and I will introduce you to the teachers and

classmates.

W: Look Tommy, there is your friend Petty.

M: I think it is a good idea for you to steal away now and leave

him with his friend.

W: What time can I come and collect him?

M: ⑪When 3-year-old children start school, they only come for

the morning session and lunch. You can collect him at 1 p.m.

W: ⑬Tommy likes playing with friends. I think he will settle

down now that he has so many friends here. ⑫They have

W: Thank you.

Text 9 房租涨价

M: You seem to be unhappy. What’s the matter?

W: Well, I just had a quarrel with my landlord yesterday.

M: How come?

W: He told me that the rent will increase by 20 percent. I have

tried to bargain with him but in vain.

M: I heard that it’s one of the most expensive places to live in

New York.

W: I have known that. ⑭The landlord increases the rent too much.

I am considering to move out.

M: Have you found a new flat?

W: No. I am looking for some place near the subway station so

that I can avoid traffic jams.

M: I see. No one likes them. I am riding my bicycle to work

instead of taking the bus.

W: Pay attention to the pollution. Sometimes you have to put on

a mask when cycling.

M: Yes. But the subway station is far away from where I live. I

don’t have enough money to pay for the rent.

W: ⑮I think you should manage your spending more wisely

like cutting expenses on dining out and take-away. You do

that a lot.

M: You know I can’t cook and I am busy. Do you know where I

can find cheap meals?

W: Some food in the supermarket is often offered at a huge

discount.

M: Really? I don’t really like that ... New York is indeed

expensive, especially for students like us, isn’t?

W: I can’t wait to graduate and get highly paid.

M: Do you still want to live in New York after you graduate?

W: I don’t really like living in a big city, but ⑯it’s easier to get a

job in a big city like New York.

Text 10 旅行的意义

W: Nowadays, travelling has become common to all sorts of

people — tourists, students, politicians, businessmen and

others. A tourist, for example, is interested in seeing places

and observing the ways of other people in the world. Students

go on educational tours with the intention of enriching their

knowledge. Everyone who travels long distances does so

with some purpose.

⑰Travelling has great educational value. First, seeing places

with our own eyes leads to enrichment of knowledge. The

scene directly witnessed and observed makes a deeper

impression on our minds than what we read in a book.

When we travel to other countries, we come across different

cultures, different customs and habits and different manners.

We learn not only about these but all about the modern

advancements in those foreign lands.

Education leads to a sympathetic understanding of problems

one faces in life. Similarly, ⑱travelling among natural objects

like mountains and hills, rivers and valleys, forests and

beaches softens the human mind and leads to a sympathetic

understanding of all living creatures.

During our travels, we come across many kinds of people

speaking different languages and having a different set of

beliefs, and we learn to move with such people. ⑲Travelling,

therefore, strengthens a friendship between people of

different areas of our country. We probably learn other

languages, which is an advantage.

⑳Travelling helps us see the historic monuments of our

country. This is worth more than all the knowledge books can

give us all our life.

M: Any suggestions on where to have dinner?

W: I think it is up to you because we are preparing a party for

your birthday.

M: I’d like to cook myself as I really enjoy cooking, but I also

look forward to inviting a chef to prepare the dinner.

W: ⑪That sounds good but think about the washing-up. If we

cook at home, we will have too much housework.

M: But it’s also difficult to decide where to go. There are so

many good restaurants around us.

W: We had a very good meal last month at a Chinese restaurant.

M: Shall we try it again? And any recommendations?

W: I’d love to. The hotpot there is delicious.

M: I like hotpot but ⑫I find it is too spicy and the chilies burn

my throat.

W: You can choose the one without chilies. It also offers other

traditional Chinese dishes.

M: That’s great. I will call and book a table. What time suits

you?

W: I don’t get home from work until 6 p.m., so ⑬I think 7 o’clock

would be fine. I will try to contact others to make sure the

time available.

M: I’ll let you know if the restaurant cannot take us. If you don’t

hear from me, I will drive round and ⑬pick you up at 6:30

p.m. tomorrow evening.

W: I look forward to seeing you then.

M: I’m calling to ask about my electricity bill. My account

number is 92007593.

W: Is that Mr. Peterson? What can I help you with?

M: Yes. I think I’ve been overcharged.

W: I’m sorry to hear that. How do you find we charged you too

much?

M: ⑭I usually pay about $40 a month.

W: And how much did we charge on this bill?

M: $480.

W: Was your usage different in any way?

M: No, the same as before. Quite normal.

W: I’m sorry. There certainly seems to be a mistake. ⑯I’ll

contact an engineer to go to your house and check your

meter. What’s your address?

M: ⑮5043,13th Street, Mariposa, CA 95338. And my phone

number is 7597-782431.

W: Thank you. I’m terribly sorry about the possible mistakes.

We’ll do our best to find it out and fix the problem as quickly

as possible.

M: Thank you for your helping me out.

W: Is there anything else that I can help you with today?

M: No, thank you. That would be all.

W: Okay. Thanks for calling, and I hope you have a good day.

M: You too! Goodbye.

M: Holi is one of the important festivals of the Hindus. It is a

colorful festival of great joy and enthusiasm. This festival is

celebrated all over the country as a day filled with fun and

enjoyment.

Holi indicates the end of winter and the beginning of

the spring season. According to the Hindu calendar, it is

celebrated on the full-moon night of the month of Phalgun.

Holi is celebrated to mark the victory of truth over evil, the

victory of Prahlad over King Hiranyakashyap. Prahlad was

a devotee of God. His father, King Hiranyakashyap did not

believe in God but believed in his own powers. He failed to

stop his son’s devotion to God and decided to kill him by

burning him alive. Pahlad’s aunt, Holika, had a God-gifted

ability that she would not be burnt in the fire. She sat with

her nephew in the blazing fire. Holika let herself be burnt and

Prahlad was saved. ⑰The truth, the powers of the Supreme

God, defeated the false evil.

⑲During the day women folk show respect for a pile of

wood called Holi. At the end of the day in the full-moon

night Holi is burnt in a holy way. The green ears of grains

and beans are heated up in the fire and distributed among

friends and relatives. ⑳Friendships are made and enemies

are gone. ⑲Next day is the festive day of Holi. People with

colored faces come on the streets and dance to the drum beats

and shout “Holi Hai”. ⑱Children throw colored water on

each other. There are noisy scenes as little groups of children

move from one place to another exchanging Holi greetings,

singing songs and laughing at their own jokes. It is almost

mid-day when people move indoors to freshen themselves.

W: Excuse me. Could you tell me where the library is?

M: Yes, it’s that way. You go three blocks to Washington Street,

W: Hmm ... Yeah, that’s a great idea! While we’re here, let’s pick

W: The recipe calls for flour, sugar and butter. Oh, and we also

W: Did you eat something wrong? It may be food poisoning.

I am quite satisfied with it, I think I may rent it.

M: Thanks. Glad to hear that. Any other questions?

W: How much are you expecting to rent it for?

M: ⑦For each month you would have to pay $1,000.

W: That is too expensive. I can’t afford that.

M: I don’t think that is too much for rent in this area.

W: How does $800 a month sound to you?

M: That’s not enough.

W: That’s the most that I can offer.

M: ⑦I can make it 5% off if you rent it yearly. That’s my final

W: All right, I will take it.

W: I don’t think anyone feels comfortable and safe flying in a

storm. I have gone through one last time I was on business.

M: Do you think we will be all right? ⑨I hope our vacation

won’t be ruined.

W: The weather forecast says it’s going to be a small one. But it

will probably be with us for a while. We must believe that our

pilot knows what he is doing and will be able to handle this

well.

M: ⑩When do you think the pilot will turn off the Fasten Your

Seatbelt sign?

W: ⑩He’ll turn it off as soon as he knows that we are safe.

M: Do you think that we are going to crash?

W: Relax and take a deep breath. We’ll be all right.

W: I was at the library all day preparing for an important exam.

M: Why don’t you study in your dormitory?

easily. It’s easy for me to feel relaxed and sleepy. Besides, it’s

always noisy next door when Amanda invites her friends over.

M: I see. Have you ever talked to her about that?

W: I tried, but she seems to not even care and just do the same as

before.

M: I can talk to her if you need me.

W: No, you don’t need to. ⑫I’m moving out next month.

M: Really?

W: To a flat on the Crabapple Road.

M: Fine. There. See anything you like?

W: This place looks great! It’s got a swimming pool, two

restaurants, a games room and a spa. And it’s right on the

beach!

M: It’s also really expensive. Look at the daily rate. It’s a luxury

resort. I don’t think we can afford that.

W: It is all-inclusive. We wouldn’t have to pay for meals.

M: True, but ⑬that’s half the fun of travelling: discovering little

out-of-the-way restaurants that serve local cuisine.

W: Well, how about this place? ⑫It’s reasonably priced and it’s

W: We must choose our career properly. May I know your choice

of career?

M: Yes, of course. I have decided to become a doctor. Do you

like this profession?

W: Yes, I do. It is a good profession. Could you tell me why you

have chosen this profession?

M: ⑭There is a shortage of good doctors in the country. The

people who live in the villages cannot consult a good doctor.

W: Are you willing to go to the villages if necessary?

M: Yes, of course. Through this profession I will be able to earn

money honestly. Well, could you tell me about your choice of

career?

W: Of course. I want to be an agriculture officer.

M: Most students like to be doctor, engineer or administrator.

Why not you?

W: Our country is an agricultural country. Our economy depends

on agriculture.

M: Yes, it is right. Please tell me about your plan.

W: ⑮I will get myself admitted into an agricultural university

to continue my research on agriculture and put what I have

learned into practice. I’ll teach the farmers about the modern

method of cultivation.

M: I appreciate your plan.

W: We must work hard to fulfill our plan.

M: Of course. That’s why we are here taking the HSC

examination, otherwise we will not be able to become a

doctor or an agriculture officer.

Text 10 知名主持人

M: Born in New York City in 1931, famous talk show host Regis

Philbin grew up in the Bronx and attended the University of

Notre Dame. He worked on various TV shows, eventually

landing the co-hosting show that would be known as Live

with Regis and Kathie Lee, and later Live with Regis and

Kelly. Philbin has also hosted the game show Who Wants to

Be a Millionaire.

After graduating from university in 1953, Philbin served in

the U.S. Navy. ⑰Following his discharge from the military,

he began his television career with several entry-level jobs in

Hollywood, including a post as a film-delivery-man in Los

Angeles, California.

Philbin got his first big break in the business after he began

writing reviews of the station’s newscasts and pinning them

up on walls, resulting in a position as a news and sports

writer. This led to several news and feature reporting jobs in

radio and television, and then to anchoring positions.

His first talk show, The Regis Philbin Show, in San Diego,

led to his now well-known style of “host chat”. Without

money for a writing staff, Philbin began each show sharing

his own observations and engaging with the audience.

This led to an Emmy-winning Los Angeles show called

⑱Philbin’s People, in which he discussed current issues

with popular celebrities.

In 1983, he joined Cindy Garvey on New York City’s The

Morning Show, but the show did not fare well in the ratings.

⑲Garvey was replaced by Kathie Lee Gifford in 1985, and

the show was renamed Live with Regis and Kathie Lee.

The two’s on-air chemistry made the show a success, and it

became nationally broadcast in 1988. For his part, ⑳Philbin

received seven Emmy nominations after beginning his long

run on the show.

to Bus No. 8. It will take you to the railway station.

W: One more thing: when you transfer, you’ll have to cross the

Text 10 英国美食

W: When you think of British food, certain dishes instantly come

to mind. Meat pies and Yorkshire pudding are two famous

examples. But one item in particular stands out as a national

treasure: fish and chips. You may be surprised to learn that

this traditional British dish was actually introduced by people

from other countries.

In the sixteenth century, ⑱many Jews from Spain and Portugal

arrived in England. They had been forced to leave their home

countries because of their religious beliefs. One dish they

brought with them to England is fried fish.

This dish quickly became popular and could soon be found

all across Britain. Thomas Jefferson even wrote about eating

“fried fish in the Jewish fashion” on a visit to London, and

writer Charles Dickens mentions a fried-fish restaurant in his

novel Oliver Twist.

The chips arrived in England by a different route. ⑲Potatoes

were introduced to Europe from South America around 1570.

In the 1680s, French and Belgian women ate fried potatoes

when the rivers froze in winter and no fish could be caught.

They brought this tradition with them to London. Soon, fried

potatoes, or chips, were common among London’s poorer

neighborhoods.

It took another foreigner to combine fish with chips. Joseph

Malin was a young Jewish boy whose family came to

London from Eastern Europe. ⑳At 12 years old, Joseph

began selling chips on the street to make extra money.

Then he had an idea — he added fried fish. His business

was so successful that around 1860, he opened Britain’s

first fish-and-chips shop.

Text 10 芝加哥风情

M: Chicago is located on the shores of Lake Michigan and is

known for its interesting history, tall buildings, baseball

culture, and delicious food. It is also called the Windy City.

The city’s location was originally home to Native Americans.

In fact, the name Chicago comes from a native American

word which refers to the wild vegetables that lined the nearby

river. Chicago officially became a city in 1837. Gradually it

grew into an important railroad center, and its position on

第36页

- 154 -

a major river soon turned Chicago into a center of industry,

trade, shipping, and banking.

⑱The history of Chicago is marked by the Great Fire of

1871. The fire burned down a third of the city. Chicagoans

quickly rebuilt homes and businesses with materials that

resisted fire better. In addition, the introduction of safety

elevators allowed for new buildings to reach dizzying heights

and helped Chicago bounce back stronger than ever.

The world’s first skyscraper was built in Chicago in 1885,

and the city has blossomed from this seed. Today, Chicago

has the second most skyscrapers in the United States, and

⑲the tallest of these is the 442-meter-high Willis Tower.

Tourists can also head to Millennium Park to check out Cloud

Gate, a huge bean-shaped work of art.

Chicago-style hot dogs are said to be “dragged through

the garden” because they’re loaded with vegetables. And

⑳Chicago’s most famous food is deep-dish pizza. It is

similar to pie and has lots of sauce and cheese.

Indeed, the Windy City is a wonderful vacation spot.

Chicago’s average wind speed is around 10 miles per hour —

little more than a gentle breeze.

worked in your stores that it’s an extraordinary place to work

with plenty of opportunities for growth.

W: I see. ⑬Your resume shows you’ve worked in a pizza store

and a seafood restaurant before. What have you learned in

your previous jobs that you could apply to Second Scoop?

M: I think a key thing is to memorize the menu first. Along with

that, a server should also try each item for themselves because

it’s extremely helpful when making recommendations to

customers.

W: Do you mind doing that now? Pretend that I’m a customer

and make a recommendation.

M: Sure. Do you prefer fruity flavors or chocolate?

W: Fruity. But I’d like something low in calorie if possible.

M: ⑭You might like a Wild Berry Ice Pop, then. It’s made with

five kinds of fruits and best of all, there’s no added sugar.

W: All right. Thanks.

Text 9 医院

W: What seems to be the problem?

M: ⑮For the past few days, I’ve been feeling tired and weak. I’ve

lost a fair amount of weight recently as well.

W: I see. I’ve got a checklist here for you to fill out.

M: Sorry, I can’t fill it out. ⑯I don’t have my reading glasses

with me.
