LOTS 330-341
A COLLECTION OF KINGFISHER JEWELLERY
AND ORNAMENTS FROM THE FORMER VICEROY
OF FUZHOU AND FUJIAN
This private collection was originally owned by the Viceroy of Min-Zhe, who served in the Qing government from 1898 to 1903.
Born in Panyu, Guangdong he achieved the jinshi rank in the Imperial examination in 1850, aged eighteen, rising to became one
of the highest-ranking officials under the reign of Emperor Guangxu.
During the late nineteenth century, chronic food shortages were endured and social conflict ensued. His central role
investigating the corruption within state granaries was praised by the Empress Dowager Cixi and he became her godson.
As a loyal politician, he strived to preserve peace in the country. He was appointed General of Fuzhou and Minister of Ports and
Shipping. According to the descendant of the Viceroy, this collection is largely gifts from the Emperor Guangxu and Empress
Dowager Cixi, and thence by descent to the present owner.
