My daughter was in Grade 10 at high school. She had been suffering from reading disability. Despite our great efforts to convince(使信服)her of her many other talents, she thought she must be stupid. Any suggestions that she attend special education classes were turned down because,in her thought, that would prove she was foolish.
She battled her work at high school. When it came to examinations, she would struggle with the questions, thus causing problems in writing answers. Her math teacher, seemingly the only teacher who understood her reading disability, unexpectedly offered to read the questions for her in an exam. As a result, she got a previously unheard-of B for the test. She could now start to believe in herself and her abilities, finally stopping thinking she was foolish.
Without thanking the math teacher, I would not allow this wonderful event to go by. I contacted the school and phoned the teacher. The surprise in his voice was obvious when I said, "I just want to express my gratitude to you." "Oh ... It's the least I could do," he responded. I told him, “I just want to thank you for reading the questions to my daughter for her math exam. Not only did she get a B, but you have no idea of the deep impact (影响) your behaviour has had on my daughter's self-belief and hope for her future. My wife, my daughter and I all sincerely thank you."
My daughter's struggles with her reading disability continue to this day. However, she is now an experienced and fully-qualified Family and Youth Care worker. School is a place that is familiar to everyone. Let's find out what American students do in school.
An official dance party is held about twice a year in the high schools in the United States. When the final football game is over for the season, there is a homecoming party. Sometimes, students select a king from among the football players, and a queen from among the girls. Every student can attend and have fun with the help of their teachers. Sometimes, to the surprise of everyone, students, who devote all their time to study, come to the party in a beautiful dress.
The most exciting party that students can go to would have to be a prom (毕业舞会). Students attend it in dresses similar to those of Hollywood stars and the atmosphere is comparable to an Oscar Award party. Since such a party is for seniors, students usually stay up the night trying to enjoy their last year in high school.
In American schools, instead of the teachers going to different rooms, students have their own class schedules and go to different classrooms. When a student is away from school, they must have an explanation for being away along with the signature (签名) of a parent. The signed paper is then handed in to the school office. American students also enjoy a number of activities out of school like cheerleading (啦啦队), student government and a host of different sports.
8. Whose presence at the homecoming party can make others amazed?
A.Theking and the queen acted by the students.
B. The laziest student in study.
C. The teacher who offers advice.
D. Students who study hardest.
9. Why do students hold the prom till the next morning?
A.They would like to dance and sing madly.
B. This is the only chance that they get dressed like film stars.
C. Students make it as exciting as an awarding party of Oscar.
D. This perhaps is the last chance that they can enjoy their high school life.
10. What do American students do in school according to the passage?
A.Study in the same classroom. B.Have the same class with each other.
C. Attend different classes in different places. D. Wait for their teachers in their classes.
11. What is this passage mainly about?
A. The organising of dance parties. B. A homecoming party.
C. How to ask for a leave. D. School life in America.
D
Each child is unique by their character, goals, shortcomings and virtues (品德). When a learning disability is added to the mix,it becomes harder for teachers to find the best approaches(方法) to advancing the child's process of learning and completing school tasks.
However,if you want to help children who have a learning disability,it is best to start with building a sincere relationship by explaining what is learning disability. You should tell them that having some sort of learning disability is not a problem that makes them any less valuable.
They just need a different approach that will help them reach the same results as their classmates in class.
Bearing in mind that children with learning difficulties cannot always reach high grades, teachers must explain to them that effort must always be above the result itself. Teachers should tell the children that the key to success is in surpassing themselves, not comparing with others. And this is possible only through putting effort into mastering a certain skill or acquiring certain knowledge. When enough effort is made, the desired result will surely be achieved;it is only a matter of time.
As Albert Einstein once said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree,it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." This nicely sums up the complex nature of intelligence in humans. Bearing this saying in mind,it is good teachers’ duty to appreciate the strengths of a child with a learning disability, to cultivate(培养) these strengths through much praise and to help create excellent skills that will enable the child to stand out among their classmates. Try to discover the gifts of children with learning difficulties and adjust those gifts to these general supportive approaches, which is good teachers’ job! Just do it, and finally all the desired goals will be achieved!
12.What makes a teacher find it harder to advance a student's study?
A.The difficult school tasks. B. The student's own character.
C. The lack of learning passion. D. The student's learning disability.
13. What should be done first when helping kids with learning disabilities?
A.Make them feel more valuable.
B. Set lots of goals for them.
C.Explain what is learning disability to them.
D. Introduce approaches to help them succeed.
14. What does the underlined word"surpassing" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Being senior to. B. Being better than.
C. Encouraging. D. Enjoying.
15. What can be inferred about"good teachers" from the last paragraph?
A.They're strict with students. B. They are adaptable and energetic.
C. They listen and communicate well. D. They can appreciate and shape students.

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy would ask for: a cell phone. I lived on that phone all summer. I always texted my friends, even at night. And I paid no attention to the people and things around myself. Being connected to the Internet was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. It was not the normal trip or beach vacation that I had been hoping for. “This year,”" my dad said, “we'll be doing something special, something I used to do with my dad when I was a kid. We're going camping in the forest!"
His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh(失望的叹息),which was my communication style at that age. But he had made the decision and would not change his mind. I comforted myself by telling myself that it was still a vacation. I remained uninfluenced when they were busy preparing for the vacation.
My mind was on my phone, the texts flying back and forth. I focused on the screen in my hands so much that the first time I looked up was when we drove across a bridge on the trip to our campsite.
I looked out of the window and saw a fast-moving river. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot. But that didn't matter to me. The reason why I had looked up was for something far more serious and annoying. My phone no longer had service. The signal was weak. During the last hour of the drive, there was no signal at all.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答。
My dad explained he had chosen a campsite that had no phone service.
The next morning, without checking my phone as usual, I fixed my mind on nature around myself.

As the pandemic separates us from loved ones, many of us are trying to stay connected through texting, even taking the opportunity to reconnect with long-lost friends.
But if our goal is to feel closer to people and enjoy our conversations more, we'd better pick up the phone, according to a new study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology.
In the study, participants (参与者) imagined having a conversation with a friend they hadn't been in touch with for at least two years and made predictions (预测) about how it would feel to connect by phone versus (对 比) email. “We think it's going to be awkward to talk to somebody, but that just turns out not to be the case,”" says lead author Amit Kumar. “Instead, people form stronger connection when they're talking on the phone than when communicating over email."
The same result held true when the researchers had participants do a conversation exercise with strangers using either video chatting, audio(声音的) only chatting, or text chatting. People who used media that included the voice had more satisfying exchanges and felt closer to their new friends than the text chatters.
Why? Likely it's because our voices communicate a variety of emotions, helping others to read us better and to feel like they really know us. Hearing someone's voice helps understand each other better—in some cases, even better than video chatting.
So, while texting can be useful,it's not the best way to get the most out of socialising. If we're looking for greater happiness and connection, we should give someone a call.
4. What do the underlined words"the case” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Stronger connection is possible. B. Predictions agree with the results. C. Talking on the phone is awkward. D. Communication over email is effective
5. Why do participants communicating with voices feel closer?
A.They can talk more quickly. B. Voices show more emotions.

6. How do researchers get the study result?
A. By quoting experts' words. B. By telling stories.
C. By making comparisons. D. By introducing theories.
7. What does the author think is the best way to connect with someone?
A. Text chatting. B. Sending emails.
C. Making calls. D. Writing letters.

My brother's words cut through my excuses.“You should see the world," he said. I knew he was right. But traveling felt like something unreal. I was tired of backpackers talking about their fantastic trips. Then, my Greek best friend Jason reminded me of our promise: to visit his hometown in Athens.
Before long, I found myself on a plane flying over an ocean I'd never crossed, excited but worried about what would happen once we landed. The long wait proved worth it. Every step through the ancient streets of Athens brought new wonders. However, what I experienced later changed my thoughts of travel.
While we were walking, a strange sound caught our attention, and broke the quietness of the street. Curious, we followed the sound. Around the corner, rose a simple workshop—its roof covered with traditional bricks and the door rolled up high. Inside, common tools shone with uncommon beauty. A heavy silence filled the air as time slowed down, giving me the space to notice every little detail.
Lost in his work, the welder (焊I) paid no attention to us. All that was visible was his short hair and the body hardened by years spent at the workshop. His hands expertly worked the metal as if he were a magician creating sparks and flames. As the man continued, I was full of admiration. I admired his peace and satisfaction. I longed for the simplicity he showed. The moment moved me to tears. The sight was more attractive than any ancient building or artistic masterpiece.
Since returning back home,I look for meaning not in the grand (宏伟的),but in the simplest of moments—the ordinary made extraordinary. Happiness lies not in collecting passport stamps or material wealth, but in finding satisfaction within yourself. There is always beauty waiting to be discovered.
8. What can we learn about the author from paragraph 1?
A.He had a lot in common with his brother.
B. He didn't show much interest in travelling.
C. He travelled to many places as a backpacker.
D.He broke his promise to have a visit to Athens.
9.What changed the author's view on travel?
A. The wonderful flying experience. B. The walk through the ancient streets.
C. The well-designed workshop. D. The chance meeting with a welder.
10. How did the author feel when he saw the welder working?
A. Curious. B. Touched.
C. Confident. D. Anxious.
11. What did the author learn from the trip?
A. Beauty exists in ordinary life. B. Small actions make a difference.
C. Travelling can bring pleasure. D. Be brave to accept changes.

Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends—532, actually,if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Kaylee's online friendships could be making her lonely? That's what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on the true friendships.
Could this be true? During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words With Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platforms(平台).
In fact,in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There's definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual worlds, we will have little time for our real-world friendships,”" says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that kids today might mistake the “friends" on the social media for true friends in life. However,in tough times, you don't need someone to like your pictures or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.
12. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To summarise the text. B. To tell us what true friends are.
C. To bring up a discussion. D. To encourage online friendship.
13. What does the underlined part"in the flesh” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. In any case. B. In person.
C. In full measure. D. In advance.
14.What is Katie's attitude towards online communication?
A. Worried. B. Unconcerned.
C. Confused. D. Positive.

Dark rain clouds were gathering in the sky. I was cycling as fast as I could to get home before the downpour. When I felt a few big drops on my head, I decided to head for a bus stop, about a hundred metres away. As I was nearing the bus stop, I saw a woman rushing towards it from the opposite direction, behind whom was a little boy.
Suddenly, a motorcycle sped past me, almost knocking me down.“Hey! Are you mad?" I shouted at the motorcyclist. He turned to look at me, saying, “Sorry." However, for a split second, he just sped on. Then he was heading right for the woman and the little boy! “Watch out! Watch out!" I shouted. I saw the lady turn her head to look at the motorcyclist, with a look of shock on her face.
In an instant, the motorcyclist reached the woman and accidentally hit her. The hit made the woman move backward. The woman and the boy fell on the road, landing right in the path of a truck.“Stop! Stop!" I screamed at the motorcyclist and the truck driver, waving my arms wildly in the air. Thankfully, the truck driver had seen what was happening. With a sudden brake, the truck stopped a few metres from the spot where the woman and the boy had fallen. Meanwhile, the motorcyclist stopped. He kept apologising, explaining he was in a hurry to the hospital to see his sick mother.
I saw the woman climbing towards the crying child. Pulling over to the side of the road, I ran to help them. By the time I got there, the truck driver had reached them. He picked up the child in his arms and examined his legs.
"I think your litle boy is all right,” said the truck driver. “How about you? Do you feel any pain?" The lady replied anxiously, “Please help me. I am pregnant."

At a high school in Indiana, a group of students are working on ideas to deal with climate change. One student, Murphy, suggests a large container filled with water that would heat up and produce steam (蒸汽) to power a car. Although the idea has limitations, climate scientist Ben Kravitz appreciates it, saying that steam power, while old, still works.
Kravitz developed a lesson with Paul Goddard, a research scientist, and Kirstin Milks, a high school science teacher. The lesson encourages students to think creatively about reducing pollution and solving global warming. Milks believes it's important for students to not only understand the dangers of climate change but also feel confident to come up with solutions. She says, “These students will lead the future climate work."
The lesson covers the basics of climate change, explaining that burning coal, oil, and gas gives off carbon dioxide (CO_{2} ),the main cause of global warming. Kravitz stresses that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the only lasting solution, but new technologies, such as wind and solar energy, are needed to make progress.
In the meantime, Kravitz and other scientists are exploring ways, such as climate engineering, to reduce the planet's temperature. Climate engineering includes techniques like reflecting sunlight back into space or removing CO_{2} from the atmosphere. However, these ways come with risks, such as changing weather systems and rainfall patterns, leading to loss of biodiversity and impacting agriculture. Students are encouraged to think about such challenges when developing their ideas.
Through this lesson, Milks hopes to develop in students both awareness and optimism (乐 观), showing them that they can play a role in solving global issues.
12. What is Murphy's idea?
A. Design a special car. B. Power cars with steam.
C. Discover new energy. D. Make a drinking machine.
13. Why was this lesson developed?
A.To equip students for climate action.
B. To discuss the benefits of using solar energy.
C. To encourage students to stop using coal and gas.
D. To explain climate change affects weather systems.
14.What can we know about climate engineering?
A. It can absorb the sunlight. B. It can add CO_{2} to the atmosphere.
C. It may enrich the biodiversity. D. It may have effects on agriculture.
15. What is a suitable title for the passage?
A. The challenges of climate engineering B. Students’ contributions to steam power C. The development of climate-related technologies D.Students’creative ideas for a better climate future

Tom was an ordinary high school student with great potential. However, ever since he got his hands on a state-of-the-art (最先进的) smartphone, his life began to look like a mess. What began as a casual interest in mobile games and social media soon turned into a full-blown addiction (上瘾). He would spend hours on end, eyes glued (粘) to the screen, unaware of the world around him.
In class, instead of paying attention to the teachers' lectures, he would hide his phone under the desk, absorbed in texting his online friends or watching entertaining videos. His homework was either carelessly done or left unfinished. His grades, which had been always above average, started to fall quickly. His teachers noticed the change and repeatedly reminded him, but he was too deep in the addiction to pay attention to their warnings.
At home, the situation was no better. Family dinners were disturbed (打扰;干扰)by his constant phone-checking. He locked himself in his room, preferring online strangers to that of his own family. His parents were deeply concerned and tried various methods to wean (使.... 戒掉)him off the phone. They limited his screen time, hid the device, and even engaged (忙 于,从事于) in long heart-to-heart conversations with him about the importance of focus and self-control. But each time, Tom would find a way to get back to his phone.
One day,Tom's school announced a scholarship(奖学金)opportunity for students with outstanding academic performance. This was a dream for Tom, as it could open doors to a well-known university and a bright future. But as he looked at his recent report cards filled with disappointing grades and thought about his phone-addicted habits, he felt disappointed. My wife and I recently completed a day-long tour of the Great Wall with Jessie. In addition to being very knowledgeable about the history of the areas that we toured, she spoke excellent English and was able to answer all of our questions. Her driver was very experienced and polite, and we really enjoyed being able to have a customised tour that avoided the tourist traps and forced shopping that seem to be a part of larger group tours.
The attractions themselves were fantastic. I was a little worried that the snowy weather might impact our trip to the Great Wall, but everything went fine, and there weren't many people out at all that day. I suggest wearing strong shoes—the Great Wall is really a hike. And in snowy or rainy days, the surfaces are pretty slippery (滑的)! Seeing this area in winter was really unique, and the snow made for great pictures. Jessie kept us entertained with stories and facts about the construction of the Wall, and always pointed out great spots for taking pictures. Even though she was in fantastic shape, she cared about our level of fitness and often stopped to let us catch our breath.
When we got back to our hotel,Jessie gave us a great recommendation for dinner and some tips for our planned stops the next day. If I find myself in Beijing in the future, I will certainly be contacting Jessie for more tour opportunities, and I've already recommended her to some friends who are visiting the area later in the year. I can't say enough about how kind and knowledgeable she was, and she really gave us a great tour experience.
4.What can we infer about Jessie?
A. She is a tour advisor. B. She is a tour guide.
C. She is a foreign traveller. D. She is a skilled driver.
5.When did the writer visit the Great Wall?
A. In spring. B. In summer. C. In autumn. D. In winter.
6.What did the writer think of his tour?
A.Adventurous. B. Disappointing. C. Satisfactory. D. Improvable.
7.What is the probable title for the text?
A.A Wonderful Tour Day with Jessie B. An Extraordinary Tour Company C.The Great Wall,an Excellent Attraction D. Jessie,a Kind and Knowledgeable Guide

On October 27,2021, my friend and I boarded the first flight of our journey from Vancouver Island, to Peru,South America.
Twenty-four hours and four airports later we landed in Cusco,Peru, a city of one million people. Coming from Vancouver Island with only 100 feet above sea level, we knew that we were now at a much higher altitude—over ll, 000 feet—and needed time to get used to the scarcer oxygen (缺氧) levels! We followed the advice of other travellers and the locals:drink lots of coca leaf tea and rest for a couple of hours before any activity.
We were soon hiking through the ruins and surrounding ancient castles of Cusco. Leaving Cusco the next day, we stopped at the Moray Ruins, which were used for farming by the Incas. Their size and unique design should be considered a lesson in historical engineering skills. This Inca site is one of the least known tourist destinations, but it's one of the most interesting places to visit.
Arriving in the beautiful Sacred Valley, we stayed at Willka T'ika for the next week. This place is wonderful. We enjoyed delicious vegetarian meals, all made with local produce by the loving Quechua people.
You can't go to Peru without visiting historic Machu Picchu. The “road" up to the ruins is made up of an endless series of switchbacks (急转弯), resulting in cold sweats. It was worth the ride, though.
It was too soon before we were leaving Peru. We learned the unique history of Inca, Quechua culture, and the farming methods still widely practised. The best thing we took away returning home to Vancouver Island was how simple and caring the people are and how deeply they love the earth and everyone they meet.

To see the future of high-speed railways, you need to go to China.
At the beginning of the 2lst century,China had no high-speed railways. Slow and often uncomfortable trains ran across this vast country, with low average speeds making journeys such as Shanghai-Beijing a test of travel endurance(忍耐力). Today,it's a completely different picture. The populous nation has the world's largest network of high-speed railways.
With the highest speed of 350~\kph on many lines, intercity travel has been completely changed and the dominance (主导地位) of airlines has been broken on the busiest routes. China's ambition is to make high-speed rail the popular choice for domestic long-distance travel, but these new railways have a much greater importance. They are a symbol of the country's economic power, rapid modernisation, growing technological skills and increasing prosperity(繁荣).
It's hard not to be impressed by the size of some of the new stations, and by the efficiency (效率) with which the system moves vast numbers of people, all with a booked seat and increasingly without the need for paper tickets, just a scan of an ID card at the ticket gates.
Not satisfied with pushing the boundaries of speed, endurance and civil engineering, Chinese companies are among the first in the world to introduce new technology such as autonomous (driverless) train operation and advanced signaling and control technology.
The driverless “bullet trains" connecting Beijing and Zhangjiakou in northern Hebei Province are capable of reaching speeds of up to 350\ kph ,making them the world's fastest autonomous trains.
12.What can we know about Chinese Railway in the past?

13. Which is NOT the benefit that high-speed railways bring?
A. They promote local prosperity.
B. They"shorten" the distance between cities.
C. They show the country's economic power.
D. They take the place of the airlines.
14. What does the author want to tell us by saying"just a scan of an ID card" in Paragraph 4?
A.To show the importance of an ID card.
B. To explain the way of entering the ticket gates.
C. To prove the convenience of taking high-speed rail.
D. To introduce the usage of an ID card in high-speed rail transport.
15. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The development of Chinese high-speed railways.

Kevin was a"slow” boy. He didn't learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the schoolyard races. However,Kevin could get along well with other people. And his enthusiasm for life was quite contagious (有感染力的). So,when he discovered that his teacher,Randy Moss, was putting together a basketball team, his mother could only answer, "Yes, you may join."
Basketball became the centre of Kevin's life. He liked to stand in a certain spot near the free-throw line and shoot baskets. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball.
The day before their first game, Randy gave each player a bright red jersey (运动衫). Kevin had stars in his eyes when he saw his number 12. He quickly put it on and almost never took it off again. Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game doesn't help you win. More balls fell out of the basket than into it, and the boys lost every game that season, except one—the night when it snowed and the other team couldn't make it to the game.
At the end of the season, they had the misfortune to play against the first-place team—the undefeated first-place team. The game went pretty much as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter,Kevin's team stood nearly 30 points behind.
At that point, one of Kevin's teammates called a time out. As he came to the side,Randy couldn't imagine why the time out had been called. “Mr. Moss, this is our last game and I know that Kevin has played in every game, but he's never made a basket. I think we should let Kevin make a basket," said the boy.
With the game completely out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so the plan was made. Every time Kevin's team had the ball,Kevin was to stand in his special spot near the free-throw line and they would give him the ball.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
His first shot bounced around but missed.
Soon, all the players threw the ball to Kevin and clapped for him.

"Once upon a time there were two eagles who lived in a perfect ecosystem. What are the eagles' names?" Gina, a science teacher, pauses while students call out their ideas. Picking out the students′ favorites, she continues with the tale, “Yes, the two eagles, Nugget and Wings, lived in a balanced ecosystem and wanted to start a family. What can the eagles observe?” asks Gina, holding a hand up to her forehead like she's looking in the distance. She then looks around the room and waits for students to do the motion, and continues the question, “from their nest?"
Over the next few days, the students and Gina use an interactive storytelling method that she and Kent, a language specialist, have adapted from world language teaching method to serve their learners. While most often found in world language classrooms, interactive storytelling fits well in many learning environments, particularly those serving English language learners.
Interactive stories support students to learn the vocabulary within a light and memorable story. As students co-create the story with the teacher by naming characters, supplying backstories, identifying connections, summarizing key points, and more, they become involved in the tale.
Later in the story, Nugget and Wings' balanced ecosystem is thrown into disorder when Gina introduces a unicorn(独角兽)species.Students make predictions(预测)about how a rising unicorn population will affect the eagles and make judgments about the decision to introduce the animal that kills or eats them, a dragon, into the system to solve the problem. While the latest characters are imaginary, these middle school scientists are encouraged to think about cause and effect, humans and the environment. Meanwhile, systems thinking is developed.

Welcome to your freshman year of high school! Junior high is behind you, and now you enter a whole new world with the “big kids". But what should you expect about your freshman year of high school?
High schools are usually larger than any other school you've ever attended. Often, they seem to require a GPS to get from place to place. As a result, it's important to take orientation days (迎新日) seriously. Take your schedule and walk it a few times before the first day of school. Your freshman year of high school is full of new experiences, so the more you know going in, the faster you'll feel comfortable.
Making new friends is both exciting and scary in high school. You'll be taking classes with people you've never met before, and they have whole new world views. Your friends may not share their lunch or study hall, so keep yourself open to finding others to sit with during those times. Other freshmen will be going through the same situation as you, and they'll need someone to sit with. If you see another freshman looking for a seat, provide a seat for him/her at your table.
When you went from 6th grade to middle school, you found your coursework become more difficult. You can expect your freshman year won't be much different. Your coursework will greatly increase, and expectations (期待) from your teachers will be much greater than before. You'll have more homework, more papers, and harder exams. As a result, learning how to study well is very essential in high school.
One of the great things about high school is that there are so many more opportunities to take part in activities that interest you. You can expect to choose a number of fun activities during your freshman year. Taking part in activities allows you to meet new people, find out what you're really interested in, and explore more of who you are.
8.What is the purpose of the Orientation Days?
A.To ask the first-year students to get a GPS.
B. To teach the freshman to be serious about Senior high school. C.To allow the freshman to make a schedule.
D. To help the students with a better understanding of the new campus.
9. What does the author suggest doing after entering high school?
A. Being open to new people.
B. Building a new world view.

11.What is the writer's intention of writing this text?
A. To encourage high schoolers to study harder.
B. To tell about the freshman year of high school.
C. To show the importance of orientation days in high school.
D. To explain the differences between middle school and high school.

Many travelers face a common problem: jet lag. It is the feeling of tiredness people get when traveling a long distance, resulting in a difference in daylight hours.
People who travel long distances often want to prevent jet lag. Professor Malcolm von Schantz says one way, but it has a high cost. Paying a lot for a bigger seat and more space in an airplane can prevent sleep deprivation (剥夺). He knows most people cannot pay so much to travel. But he says timing your flights can help. For example, he suggests flying from Europe to North America during the day, so that it is evening when passengers land and they can get to sleep. Von Schantz also said flying in newer passenger jets, like the Airbus A350 or Boeing 787 Dreamliner, might help. Those planes can keep a more comfortable atmosphere inside, causing less tiredness.
Experts say being in sunlight is important to resetting your internal (内部的) body clock. That could mean either avoiding morning sun or seeking it out, depending on where you started. Getting light in the morning will move your body clock forward, while getting light in the early evening will delay it. Sleeping for a short time during the day is acceptable, but scientists warn against sleeping for longer periods later in the day. Doing so might make it harder to sleep through the night. They suggest business travelers should consider arriving a day or two ahead of any important meetings or events. Being jet-lagged can lead to unwise decisions and unpleasant feelings. He advises tourists to get enough sleep before doing anything that requires a lot of attention, like driving.
Experts suggest increasing tourists’ exposure to light when they arrive at a new place to prevent jet lag. But they also have another method if light does not help: drinking coffee.
12. What's the function of the first paragraph?
A. To explain what jet lag is.
B. To encourage people to travel.
C. To show why jet lag is common.
D. To offer advice for long-distance tourists.
13. How many ways does Malcolm von Schantz provide to prevent jet lag?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
14.What's the advice for business travelers?
A.Avoiding the sunlight. B. Sleeping during the day.
C. Arriving at the destination in advance. D. Paying attention to the driving.
15. What's the text mainly about?
A. What is jet lag? B. When does jet lag happen? C. Why is jet lag common? D. How can jet lag be prevented?

I was born small, which often left me feeling unconfident. During my second year of high school, my family moved to a different city. Getting used to life as a new kid has always been difficult for me, and this move made it more challenging. In my new school, I felt physically and mentally uneasy. Other students had already built friendships, leaving me without a friend.
Besides, I found English learning boring and didn't know what to do during English classes. So, I spent my free time drawing because that was what I usually did when I was alone.
I still recall the first day in the school dining hall. While waiting in line for food, I heard a group of students excitedly discussing an upcoming English drama show for freshmen. As I passed by, they glanced at me with surprise. “He looks so small," someone said in a low voice. My face burned with embarrassment and I bent my head. Pretending not to hear them, I slipped into the farthest seat available and had my meal alone.
Yours, Li Hua
In my first English class, I sat at my desk, staring blankly at the book. The letters and words seemed to dance confusingly across the page and laugh at me. Losing interest quickly, I began drawing on the book. A few minutes later, my English teacher, Mr. Frank—a kind man—walked up to me.
"Nice drawing," he said gently. “"You know, language is also an art form; it carries its own charm (魅力) and beauty. I believe you could find English attractive if you discover where to begin."

Ten years ago I was very fit (健康的). I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn't earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn't a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.
Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because Ijust didn't have any time for things like that any more.
There's a lot of stress (压力) in my job. Perhaps that's why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top, and instead of having one glass, I would have several. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.
Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn't believe it. Luckily it wasn't very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven't any time! My job takes everything out of me!
Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won't earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. Ijust don't know what I should do.What do you think?

Tiny,black-capped chickadees (北美山雀)have big memories. They store food in hundreds to thousands of different locations in the wild—and then come back to these places when other food sources are low.
Scientists have known that chickadees have incredible memory skills. That memory can be a matter of life or death for these birds when there are no enough food resources in colder months.
Some researchers thought that neurons called place cells (细胞) would explain these birds ability to remember where their food is stored. These cells are known to include information about where things are in space. But recently, Selmaan Chettih and his team found that each time a chickadee hides a seed (种子) in a specific location, a unique brain pattern appearsseparate from place cells.
To observe this, Chettih and his team created special areas with lots of feeders filled with sunflower seeds. They put small flaps(片状下垂物)where birds could hide seeds.
The scientists tracked the activity in their brains. Each time a bird hid a seed under a flap, researchers saw a brief unique brain pattern appear—what they called the bar code. Different patterns appeared even if the birds hid many seeds in the same location. When the birds revisited these sites and retrieved the hidden seeds, the same bar code-like pattern appeared again, as though all the information about each location and seed were related to a unique brain pattern.
The researchers compared these memories to episodic memories in humans, which are memories of specific events or personal experiences. They're important to how humans connect time, people, places and sensory information together.
Chettih says that this seed-hiding behavior has a clear pattern of activity, which may help researchers build a structure for how the brain creates and stores memories.
8. Why are memory skills necessary for chickadees?
A.Memory skills show their intelligence and learning abilities.
B. Memory skills can help them survive in colder months.
C. They need memory skills to identify different types of food.
D. They use memory skills to avoid being attacked by other animals.
9.What did Chettih and his team find?
A. Unique brain patterns appeared when chickadees hid seeds.
B. Chickadees’ memories were controlled by place cells.
C. Chickadees preferred hiding sunflower seeds.
D. Chickadees often hid many seeds in the same location.
10. What does the underlined word “retrieved" mean in paragraph 5?
A. Got back. B. Gave up. C. Repaired. D. Designed

A.To compare chickadees and human memory skills.
B.To present a detailed description of chickadees.
C. To introduce a study on chickadees’ memory.
D. To provide readers with a way to improve memory skills.

Heading soccer balls seems to take greater injuries on women than on men, according to a new study which focuses on the brains of soccer players.
Head knocks can really hurt the brain. Female athletes tend to suffer more brain damage than males do after injuries, the study points out. But until now, no one had directly compared damage in men and women after heading balls.
Michael Lipton, a brain imaging expert at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, led the research. He noted, “It's important to work out how males and females might be different after brain injuries. Hopefully, finding out how the sexes differ after brain damage will help choose better treatments for each."
Researchers chose 98 soccer players from amateur (业l余的) teams. The players worked out how often they had headed a ball in the past year. The average headers among men were 487 while women 469.The researchers then studied the brain scans (扫描)of each player looking for signs of damage. They used a special type of scan to stress changes in the brain's white matter. White matter is made up of fibers (纤维), which carry electrical signals (信号) from nerve cells in one part of the brain to those in another. So damage to white matter affects how well the brain works. The scans turned up more widespread brain damage in the female players. In women, eight regions showed possible damage linked to frequent headers. In men, only three regions did.
The brain changes studied here weren't big enough to cause brain damage. But repeated blows to the brain can lead to memory loss, depression and other problems. One bigger concern is CTE, which can lead to confusion, trouble remembering things and the emotional blow-up. Researchers don't know why women's brains appear at greater risk. Differences in their heads and necks may play a role. So might genetics and hormones.
12.What does the new study focus on?
A. Comparison of brain damage between sexes.
B. Causes of brain injuries among players.
C.Uses of white matter in our brains.
D. Effect of repeated blows on athletes.
13. Why did Michael Lipton's team carry out the study?
A.To find out the differences between men and women.
B. To improve treatments for brain injuries.
C. To prevent soccer players from getting hurt.
D. To make a discovery in soccer skill study.
14.How was the research carried out?
A. By interviewing soccer players. B. By studying the brain scans.
C. By using a computer model. D.By referring to earlier studies.
15. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. It is hard to recognise brain damage.
B. The study proves to be a total failure.
C. Reasons for brain damage remain unclear.
D. Mental problems cause physical differences.

New Year's resolutions (决心) usually are like some of those promises that are meant to be broken. The word “New” in the new year puts a lot of pressure on starting over and turning a new leaf. But you must remember you cannot just become a different person overnight when the clock strikes _16_. Instead of making resolutions that cause you stress, anxiety or more pain, set out this year by making resolutions that will encourage self-care.
To start this fresh New Year's Day, here are a few tips setting realistic New Year's resolutions in order to avoid the burden of disappointment next year.
Choose a very specific goal
Unclear plans like “lose weight" “exercise more" or “write more” are goals with no teeth. They are unclear plans and desires, and are very easy to explain away due to how unclear they are. 17. Such goals with a certain task are much more doable than unclear goals.
18
Once you have chosen your goals, make a very detailed plan of how you will reach that goal. Having a plan and a pathway can help you imagine your progress and won't make you impatient for immediate results. That way you will have already imagined what progress would look like for you in, say,3 months,5 months,7 months or every day depending on your goals.
Get yourself a social group
In today's social media world, it is easy to find a group of like-minded individuals interested in sharing your goal. Get yourself a social group like this. However, just as there is a
bright side to having a social group, the problem is the pressure. Don't get consumed by social media and what others are doing. 19
Accept failure and forgive yourself
20_. Accept this failure; own it and forgive yourself. Being hard on yourself will only do you more harm, so instead, learn from what went wrong and instead of quitting the resolution at the end of next year;see it through until you reach your goal.
A.Make a plan to reach that goal
B. Be patient with your progress
C. Instead, set goals like"exercise 20 minutes every day” or “lose 15 pounds"
D. Despite all your efforts,it is possible that you might fail or make a mistake
E. Therefore,New Year's resolutions usually end up in failure
F. Change is a difficult process—the key words being"difficult" and “process"
G. Remember you have this group only for support, not for comparison
Ⅲ.完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)
Winning feels good;losing feels bad. 21 , we can't always win. So it's important for us to accept the bad feeling of losing and turn it into a positive 22that teaches us the ways we can improve. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,British boxer Ben Whittaker _ 23 a silver medal. When he was handed the _ 24 _, he put it in his pocket instead of placing it around his neck. With tears in his eyes, he said, “I didn't win silver;I 25 gold." Similarly,China's mixeddoubles table tennis team of Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen won silver instead of gold. They _26 the loss like good sportsmen. Some Chinese fans, 27_, were angry and disappointed. In their opinion, no other country is 28 at table tennis. All table tennis golds should go to China. What they thought is wrong.
The British boxer and some China's table tennis 29 would be wise to listen to the words of NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He said, “You can't win unless you _ 30 how to lose." Kareem won a _ 3l early in his career, but that was followed by many years of losing. However, he later went on to win five more championships. Kareem did not let those years of losing _32 his spirit;he used them as motivation to work harder.
Sport is a lot like _33 _. We are always competing to get into the best schools, to win prizes, and to get better jobs. We don't always win, but every loss can be a(n) 34 to learn and, through this process, to improve. As long as you _35

In the spare time, Mrs Green always asked her sons, Alan and John to help their neighbour,Ms Maud, to clean her house because she was too old to do it herself. They helped Ms Maud throughout the spring.
Summer vacation just began. The two brothers planned to play tennis with friends every day, so they could make a freshman team. However,Alan's racket (球拍) was lost, which disappointed him a lot.
As usual,Alan and John came to Ms Maud's house to help her. They went down the block to the Ms Maud's and got started. Before cleaning,John put boxes that were thrown around the garage (车库) floor on shelves. When John put a big box on a shelf, he found a tennis racket in the box. It was a new racket, which was exactly what Alan wanted.
"You've got to see this." John took out the tennis racket and showed it to Alan.
"Whoa, where did you get that?" Alan asked. John pointed to the shelf, “It was just in the box over there."Alan continued to say, “It is so beautiful. My tennis racket was missing. If we take it, I believe no one will ever know."He looked at the garage door, which was closed.
But John didn't think it's a good idea. “Well, we do a lot of things for Ms Maud and don't get paid. It's not really stealing. It's a kind of payment for our hard work,"said Alan. Without hesitation(犹豫),John looked at the racket, took it from Alan's hand and put it back in the box.
"Hello, boys." At that time, Ms Maud walked into the garage, surprising them. “I've made a cake. Can you come in for a piece? I really appreciate all the things you do for me." "Ugh ... sure,Ms Maud," said John. “Let us finish up and we'll be right in." Ms Maud went back to her house.

Summer Reading Program
Welcome to Brown Summer Reading!
Brown High School has an independent reading program every summer. Our goals for independent reading include knowing oneself as a reader, understanding how to find what one loves to read for fun, and learning how to connect with others around books and reading. To that end, we offer you our summer reading program. You can see the introductions to reading clubs on this page and click different links to see more detailed information.
Every student must join at least one book club this summer.
Club 1: For students who like reading books in which famous people write about their own life.
Club 2: For students who like reading long written stories in which the characters and events are not usually in real life.
Club 3: For students who like reading pieces of writing that express emotions, experiences, and ideas, especially in short lines using words that have the same last sound.
Club 4: For students who like reading news reports describing real events and people.
However, we strongly recommend that one of the books you choose be an “unlikely choice". An “unlikely choice" will be a type of book that you wouldn't normally pick. This helps readers to walk outside their comfort zones or usual selections.
To discover your “unlikely choice", explore the Peer page in which your classmates will recommend their favorite books and the Senior page in which teachers will pick their favorite books for students. Parents/caregivers may want to explore the Staff page to learn more about how to support their children's independent reading. If students want to get some advice on the choice of books from professional authors, please click the Pro link for more information.

When training for my first long-distance race, I treated myself to an expensive fitness watch that tracked my time and pace.
At the end of my final training run, I threw myself down on the floor the moment I got home, only to see my watch had failed me. Twenty-one miles briefly flashed on the screen before it went blank and disappeared forever. I cried in pain. That tragic image of me crying on my living room floor pretty much describes my relationship with exercise tracking technology.
It can be a total joy to watch your data change as you get stronger and faster, but sometimes it became a stick for punishment. I would compare my pace with other people's or criticize myself for not doing it 30 seconds faster. I never really recognized this as a problem. To me, tracking was the path to self-improvement, and the point was to be better. However, in the past year, “being better” has taken on a different meaning. My mental health dropped, and things like brushing my teeth became unimaginably difficult. Being better was supposed to mean taking care of myself and feeling some joy instead of getting faster or stronger. Once I started getting better, I reflected on what made me happy and what did not. So, I stopped tracking my runs and deleted all the data.
I then found I really love jogging. I jogged around my local park with ease. But I do not love running quickly. I do not like races. I do not want to be pushed to be faster. I now notice the post-run sensations in my legs and the mental clarity it brings. I am now keenly sensitive to the fragrance of wild plants and the gentle warmth of sunshine on my face.
I am better. Sometimes I am worse. But either way, I'm moving forward slowly and firmly, and that's good enough.
4. What does the underlined words “failed" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Dragged. B. Monitored.
C. Disappointed. D. Confused.
5. Why did the author give up tracking runs?
A. To keep pace with others. B. To be faster or stronger.
C. To restart his fitness watch. D. To taste the joy of running.
6. What makes the author love jogging?
A. The feeling of being faster. B. Self-focused feelings in nature.
C. Exercising tracking technology. D. The atmosphere of the local park.
7. What can we know from this passage?
A. Adjustment brings happiness. B. Passion is the key to change.
C. Sports contribute to health. D. Success equals tracking runs.

Most people plan their vacations well in advance, including where they're going. But som ike the thrill of not knowing where they will end up.
Earlier this year, mystery box travel purchases surged among China's young people. Usually, travelers buy a mystery box at a low price—usually 100 or 200 yuan—and then receive several destination choices. After the destination is decided, their trip begins.
"The mystery box directly assigns me a few destinations, which are wonderful and cheap,"a citizen surnamed Cheng told Haibao News, a media outlet based in Shandong Province.
Liao Liangyu, 16, has turned his eagerness to go on a mystery box trip into reality. Months ago, Liao traveled with a couple of friends to Changsha in HunanProvince. With its reputation of a super hyped-up internet sensation (网红地), Liao had a change of opinion after seeing Changsha for himself. “My biggest discovery is that Changsha is a city full of contrasts,”Liao told China Daily.“You can see skyscrapers (摩天大楼)and old houses in rundown alleys(小巷)in the same view."
Travel mystery boxes bring excitement to many less popular destinations. For example, Dehong city in Yunnan, despite its scenic views, previously received few visitors due to a lack of promotion. But after it was included as a mystery box travel destination, Dehong has since got lots of attention.
But even so, a large number of people feel disappointed with travel mystery boxes because they can encounter (遇到) many problems after purchasing one, such as poor travel times and sudden flight cancellations. Sun Weili from Ctrip suggested in an interview with Haibao News that visitors should choose reliable platforms and sign contracts (合同) to guarantee their trip specifications.

11. In order to avoid problems with mystery box travel, what is suggested?
A.Choose the right time to travel.
B. Don't book air tickets in person.
C. Don't buy any mystery box travel.
D. Pay attention to the platforms and sign documents.

Once in a school, about 50 students from different junior high schools formed a new high school class.
The class was made up of active and outstanding young students but the problem was that they wouldn't share information to solve learning problems with each other and it was a headache. For instance, each of them wanted to achieve good results, but they did not want to let others know their learning progress and their own advantages, nor did they want to expose their weaknesses.
So one day, Michelle, headmaster of the class, invited them to an event. In this event, there were several fun activities organized for everyone.
For one of the activities, Michelle brought the class into a classroom which had 50 desks and envelopes of the same quantity with names on them. The students found their own envelopes and made them in the corresponding positions. Everyone was excited and was wondering what kind of activity it would be.
Michelle took a few minutes to say,“Each of you picks up the envelope in front of you and solves the problems in it by yourself. Let me divide the class into several groups, and the list is shown on the blackboard. The group that solves all the problems first wins."
Everyone immediately picked up a pen and began to work on the problem. All of them were absorbed because they were competitive. Solving difficult problems is an attractive thing for those who love learning. However, even after 20 minutes only a few scattered (分散的) students were able to finish the problems. They didn't give up and were thinking long and hard to solve the problems. Michelle came and told them that this round was over and everyone should go for next round of activity.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答。
For next round, Michelle told them to change their way of solving difficult problems.
At the end of this round, Michelle came and saw the students talking and laughing happily.

A new study has found that some of the hottest heatwaves in history happened a long time ago and were not well known. Scientists from the University of Bristol did this research and said that as our world gets warmer, we can expect even hotter heatwaves in the future.
The study found five very hot heatwaves that were not talked about much. Dr. Vikki Thompson, who led the study, said that the heatwave in Canada and the United States was very surprising, but there were even hotter ones in the past. She also said that using what we know about the climate, we can guess that very hot days will get more common in the next 100 years.
Heatwaves can cause a lot of problems. The one in western North America was very bad and caused many disasters. It also started big fires that damaged many things and ruined crops. People will remember this heatwave because it caused so much damage.
Even though the hottest places are not always the ones that have the biggest problems, they are often connected. Knowing more about the very hot days and where they happen can help protect the most vulnerable regions.
Professor Dann Mitchell, who also worked on the study, said that climate change is a big health problem for everyone on Earth. He pointed out that many heatwaves in places that are not very rich were not noticed. When a country gets very hot, it can cause many people to die, especially if the temperature is not normal for them.
The University of Bristol cares about the problems caused by climate change and wants to help fix them. In 2019, it was the first university in the UK to say that there is a climate emergency(紧急情况).
4.What can we expect aboutheatwaves in thefuture?
A. They will decrease in amount.
B. They will only affect certain regions.
C. They will have no impact on global health.
D. They will increase in degree over the coming century.
5. What does the underlined word “disasters" in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Cuts in food production. B. Events resulting in great loss.
C. Activities held by government. D. Something important to environment.
6. Why is it important to understand where the hottest heatwaves have happened?
A. To predict where the next heatwave will happen.
B. To find the connection between heatwaves and crop yields.
C. To help take measures to protect the most vulnerable regions.
D. To determine which countries need to reduce their greenhouse gas.
7. What can we know from paragraph 5?
A. Climate change has had a great influence on health.
B. The heatwaves outside of the developed world are always noticed.
C. The death rate related to the climate change is expected to be lower.
D. Developing countries are warned of the influences of climate change.

Do you still remember the scene in the famous movie Titanic, directed by Cameron, where Jack was frozen to death in the icy cold water so that Rose could survive on the floating door alone? It broke many people's hearts. Two decades later, people are still asking the question, “Wasn't there enough room on the door for both of them?" Cameron once responded by saying it wasn't a question of room, but buoyancy (浮力)—if both of them had tried to stay on the door, he argued, the whole thing would sink.
But several guys from “Mythbusters", an Australian-American science entertainment television programme, decided to put the theory to the test themselves. They discovered that if Rose had taken off her life jacket to the bottom of the door, there would have been enough buoyancy to keepboth of them afloat.
"It was an artistic choice. The thing was just big enough to hold her, and not big enough to hold him," Cameron said. “I think it's all kind of silly, really, that we're having this discussion 20 years later. But it does show that the film was effective in making Jack so attractive to the audience that it hurts them to see him die. The film is about death and separation;he had to die."
Since Jack was doomed to die, Cameron said,it could have happened in a variety of different ways. It's not about the door not being big enough: that's just a practical method for his death. “Whether it was that, or whether a chimney (烟肉) fell on him, he was going down," Cameron said. “It's called art: things happen for artistic reasons, not for physical reasons."
8. According to Cameron, why can't the audience accept Jack's death?
A. They are artistic people. B. They like the movie.
C. They love Jack. D. They are eager for truth.
9. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Jack died by accident. B.Jack's death was unavoidable.
C. The chimney fell on Jack. D. The door could make a difference.
10.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Jack Had to Die B.A Door of Life and Death C.The Audience Knew Better D. Science Behind Movie
11. Where can you probably find this article?
A. A popular magazine. B. A movie poster.
C. A government report. D. A noticeboard.

Sandstorms across the Middle East have delayed flights, closed schools and hospitalised thousands—weather experts say it could worsen as climate change makes regional weather patterns complicated.
Saudi Arabia on Tuesday became the latest country covered with dust that slowed traffic and made iconic(标志性的) towers in the capital difficult to see from more than a few hundred metres (yards) away. As was reported, emergency rooms in Riyadh hospitals had received some 1, 285 people suffering from breathing problems over 24 hours as a result of the sandstorm. Electronic signs along Riyadh's highways warned drivers to reduce their speed because of the lower visibility, even as life largely went on as usual in the kingdom.
Other countries have been struggling with the problem for longer: Neighbouring Iraq has experienced eight sandstorms since mid-April, fuelled by soil degradation (退化), serious droughts and low rainfall caused by climate change. The country's latest sandstorm on Monday covered the capital Baghdad in an orange colour, sent at least 4,000 people to hospital with breathing problems and led to the closure of airports, schools and public offices across the country.
The Middle East has always been stricken by dust and sandstorms, but they have become more often and serious in recent years. The trend is connected with overgrazing(过度放牧), deforestation and overuse of river water and more dams. Climate experts say unseasonable dry, cold air helps explain the recent increase of sandstorms in eastern Syria and Iraq and"their transmission to the Arabian Peninsula".
Sandstorms are worsening regionally because of factors including low water levels in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, large fluctuations (起伏) in yearly rainfall and dried-up soil. As for how to improve the situation, scientists advised planting more trees and"addressing the low water level of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers urgently(急迫地)".
12. What can best describe people's life affected by the sandstorms?
A. Dangerous. B. Confusing.
C. Destructive. D. Disorderly.
13. What is one of the causes of sandstorms according to the text?
A. Air pollution. B. Severe droughts.
C. Heavy rains. D. Traffic jams.
14. What is the best solution to stopping sandstorms worsening in the Middle East?
A. Planting more trees. B. Keeping soil from drying up.
C. Banning use of river water. D. Raising cattle at home.
15. Why does the author write this report?
A.To show his discovery about a new weather condition.
B.To give a full description of the destruction of sandstorms.
C. To make an explanation of the cause of sandstorms.
D. To present a suggestion to stop sandstorms happening.

I was still living in Peru when the earthquake happened. I had had a fight with my parents till midnight the day before because I thought they didn't understand me. Therefore, I was still sleeping in the afternoon. Suddenly, I was woken up by my dog barking at the shaking window next to me. Small and quick earthquakes are very common in Peru, especially in the coastal regions. So Iignored it and tried to calm my dog, then she could fall asleep again. I had walked 4 steps from the sofa to get her when the whole wall-length window broke in front of me, huge sharp pieces falling right into the sofa I had been lying in just seconds before.
Fully woken up, I could hear what sounded like a million car alarms ringing from the ground. My parents were still at work, and I was alone in a 10-floor flat with a panic-stricken (恐慌的) dog running circles around me, so I forced myself to get it together. I lifted my giant dog in my arms and ran into the emergency stairs. Ijust ran and ran until I could see some street lights since the building had no emergency lights and everything was dark. When I finally rushed through the door of the hall, I could see the road below me breaking and trees shaking from their roots.

As a Chinese who travels to Shanghai frequently, here is my suggested list of the top four hings to do in Shanghai.
AdmiretheBund
The Bund is the most famous and attractive sight there. The best time to admire the Bund is after dark when all the buildings are lit up, creating an extremely colorful and breathtaking scene. There are lots of sightseeing boats that let you view the beautiful Bund every night. Make sure to go on one of these boats. But you are not able to take good photos by boat.
Pay a visit to the Nanjing Road
Even if you are not a shop-lover, please spare an hour to visit Shanghai's premier shopping street—Nanjing Road. There are upper-class department stores within 1920s-style buildings, along with world-famous brands and restaurants. This place is ideal to shop for authentic (真正 的) Shanghainese snacks and souvenirs. If you don't want to walk, a trackless sightseeing train only costs three yuan.
Take theMaglevTrain
Take the Shanghai Maglev Train from Pudong International Airport to the Lujiazui financial district. The Maglev has a regular service speed of 430~km/h and is the fastest railway system in commercial operation in the world. This 30~km ride takes about eight minutes and 50 yuan one way, and 80 yuan for a round trip.
Taste the Hairy Crabs
Do a crab feast! Food hunting is important for most of the travelers. Shanghai's cuisine is famous and hairy crabs are what you must eat there. However, hairy crabs are seasonal. If you go between September and November, it is the best time to not only enjoy hairy crabs, but a crab feast.
1.What can visitors do in Shanghai?
A. Visit the Nanjing Road only on foot.
B.Admire the Bund better during the day.
C. Take good pictures of the Bund by boat.
D. Enjoy local snacks on the Nanjing Road.
2. How much does a couple have to pay if they take the maglev train for a round trip?
A.160. B.130. C.100. D. 80.
3.When is the best time to eat hairy crabs?
A. In August. B. In December. C. In autumn. D. In winter.
B
Between 1998 and 2017, landslides and mudslides affected nearly five million people worldwide and took the lives of more than 18,000. In contrast, wildfires and volcanic activity killed 2,400. In the U.S. alone, slides kill 25 to 50 people every year. Yet we don't hear very much about dangerous slides. Tornadoes, volcanoes, wildfires and hurricanes get more attention. They get more scientific attention, too.
The U.S. Geological Survey has a landslide research program, but most universities don't. American research universities generally avoid training students to do this type of work.
One reason for this lack of research is money. U.S. federal funds for biomedical research rose to more than $$25$ billion a year between 1990 and 2000 and have stayed high. On the other hand, funding for everything else—physics, environmental sciences, other life sciences, mathematics and even computer science—has remained mostly flat(没有变化的). Environmental science regularly has received less than $$5$ billion a year.
Another problem is that slides are hard to study. The basic idea is simple: A hillside becomes weak when the force of gravity (地心力) becomes stronger than the forces holding it together. But because rocks and soils are highly changeable, telling when a particular hill will give way is almost impossible. It's hard to publish unclear results, so scientists may choose other research topics that seem more promising.
Scientists also like to accept things they find interesting, and slides appear to fall short. Many researchers think of their work as a kind of detective story, where “interesting” means understanding a hidden process. But slides aren't hidden. They happen quite clearly on the surface, and the processes are in some ways obvious.
I don't blame scientists for wanting to study things they find fascinating. A lot of good work has been driven by mystery. But researchers have to find a way to balance love of mystery with a need to solve pressing problems such as the slippery ground under our feet.
4. What do we know about landslides and mudslides?
A. They are too simple for universities to study.
B. They draw more attention time and time again.
C. They cost the U.S. government too much money.
D. They killed more people than wildfires and volcanoes.
5. Which of the following has received the most money from the U.S. government?
A.Biochemical research. B. Computer science.
C. Environmental science. D. Physics and maths.
6. What does the underlined words in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Slide research is just like a detective story.
B. Slide research doesn't seem to last a long time.
C. Slides are interesting enough to be researched for long.
D. Slides don't seem to be interesting enough to scientists.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Dangerous Ground Under Our Feet B.The Disasters That Kill the Most People C. The Hidden Force Lying Under the Ground D.The Disasters Scientists Pay Little Attention to
C
A sedentary (久坐的)lifestyle eventually does harm to health but breaking out of long inactivity can be discouraging. Now, however, there may be a simple way to ease into more activity.
A recent study suggests that short bouts(一阵)of intense(高强度的)activity every day—climbing stairs, carrying a heavy load of things, or stepping up the pace of houseworkcan provide great health benefits.
"It's quite simple, but it's not an idea that's out there,” says University of Sydney exercise scientist Emmanuel Stamatakis who led the research. “Many people, including many health professionals, still think of physical activity as something that you do during your free time, and you need to go somewhere to do it."
Stamatakis and his colleagues, on the other hand, wanted to understand if daily life activities done somewhat vigorously in short bouts could also provide health benefits compared to a sedentary or less active lifestyle.
To study this, his team used data from nearly 25, 000 adults who were non-exercisers. Without these data, it was almost impossible to continue the study. Over the course of seven days, they used machine learning tools to determine whether a person was either sedentary, standing, walking, or doing intense activities like running during repeated 10-second windows. The researchers also divided any movement into light, middle, or high intensity. Then, for the next seven years, they recorded which study participants died and what caused the death.
The team found that people who did at least four one-to-two-minute high intensity physical activities every day had a nearly 40 percent less risk of dying from cancer and a roughly 49 percentlower chance of dying from a cardiovascular (心血管的)disease. More bouts of such strong activity meant greater protection from death risks, Stamatakis says, “The more, the better."
8.What did the recent study find?
A. An inactive lifestyle is harmful but hard to change.
B. More physical exercises can make you more active.
C. Doing daily housework is also a kind of exercise.
D. Daily short but intense activities do good to health.
9. What does the underlined word “vigorously” most probably mean?
A. Energetically. B. Continuously.
C. Frequently. D. Creatively.
10. Which of the following is mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. Research purposes. B. Research limitations.
C. Research findings. D. Research methods.
11. What would Stamatakis suggest?
A. Going to exercise at fixed time and place.
B. Avoiding movement of light intensity.
C. Doing only 8 minutes intense activity every day.
D. Carrying out more short bouts of intense activity.
D
Earthquakes are one of the most terrifying natural disasters. They destroy cities and create other disasters such as fires, landslides and tsunamis. Climate change is causing increases in other natural disasters, like wildfires and hurricanes. So could it make earthquakes more common, too?
The biggest and most dangerous type of earthquake is the movements of the plates. Heat coming from deep within the planet causes these plates to move an average of 1.5 centimeters per year, making them rub up against each other. The pressure (压力) in those areas builds until it reaches a breaking point where the plates will move suddenly, releasing energy that causes earthquakes.
Unlike other disasters, it's difficult to predict when earthquakes will happen, making planned evacuations impossible. Unluckily, climate change could make quakes happen more often. With global warming, glaciers are melting at an increased rate. When melted glacier (融 化的冰川l) water flows off land and into the sea, the land that used to sit underneath it rises, said John Cassidy, an earthquake seismologist at the Geological Survey of Canada.
It's the same principle as when a child pushes a pool noodle (泳池浮棒)below the surface and then let it go: The noodle stays down as long as there's pressure from above, but as soon as that pressure is released, it rises back up. When this happens, pressure differences can cause earthquakes.
More concerning than glacial-melt earthquakes are those that could be caused by an increase in sea level. As sea levels rise, pressure underwater on the seafloor also goes up. However, Cassidy is uncertain whether sea level rise would make these big quakes happen faster. He stressed that when they do happen, climate change will make them more dangerous.
Tsunamis caused by earthquakes will reach farther inland. Warmer oceans will lead to increased rainfall, which will raise the danger of landslides. There's still a lot they have to know.
"It's an important topic that we'll see a lot of information coming out in the coming years," Cassidy said. “But no matter what we've discovered, it's not good news."
12. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The danger of the heat. B. Why the plates move.
C. The problem of the pressure. D. How the earthquake happens.
;. What does the underlined word “predict" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Take great control of. B. Focus your attention on.

It was 3:34 in the morning. I was in our apartment on the 22nd floor.
I went to bed at around 2 o'clock in the morning, but for some reason I woke up a minute or so before the quake started. I was comfortable in my bed, about to fall asleep again when suddenly the bed started moving a little. That bed used to move a lot, so Ijust thought it was my wife rolling over. I looked over to her and she was fast asleep. She wasn't moving.
My first thought was: OK, it's just another small quake. We used to get a lot of small quakes in Chile. But this one kept going and then got a bit stronger. It was enough to wake my wife up and she asked me, “Is the room shaking?" It is our way of asking: Are we experiencing a mild earthquake? The noise of the perfume bottles hitting each other in the bathroom and the hanging wine glasses clanging against each other in the dining room confirmed what was happening. I thought, OK, this is just a strong quake, no reason to get out of bed.
When an earthquake starts to get stronger, we have learnt that we have to open the front door because they sometimes become stuck when the building starts to sway (摇显). So, I went to open the front door while my wife went to see how the kids were. They were still fast asleep. However, on the way to the front door, the shaking increased considerably. When I turned around to go back to the bedroom, the full force of the earthquake started to hit. Ihad never felt an earthquake that was so strong. I couldn't move forward and I had to hold onto the wall to stay up on my feet.
Yours, Li Hua
The earthquake gave a final strong push of intensity (强度) and then our lights went out. This is the only time in my life when I honestly thought I was going to die.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答。
The terrible shaking eventually stopped.
Once we were ready, we woke the kids up.

In movies and books, people often describe a decisive moment when they figure out who they are. However, I never thought it actually happened in real life. I never expected to have a "moment" of my own. When it arrived, mine was much more powerful than I could have ever imagined.
During the spring of my junior year, my class watched a documentary—The Invisible Children. It is about three college students who take a trip to Africa and document their experience. At first the film was slightly humorous. However, once the group arrived in northern Uganda, the mood changed. They learned what the consequences of a 23-year war had been for thousands of children. Some had lost family and friends, others were caught by the opposing force and became child soldiers.
Before long, I was sobbing. I couldn't believe these things were happening, yet at the same time I knew they were. Ijust hadn't been paying attention, for in the past 17 years, I was blessedly protected. When the movie ended, I couldn't get it out of my head. For the next week, I was not myself. Every bite of food I took I thought of Grace, the 15-year-old girl who had little to eat. When I went to bed, I pictured Sunday, the 14-year-old boy sleeping on a straw mat on the ground in a camp. My whole world shifted.
Since that day, I haven't been able to picture my future in a way that doesn't involve going to Africa and doing what I can to help. Ultimately, this is why I decided to major in engineering. With an engineering degree, my potential for change will be limitless. I will build wells and schools, and design irrigation systems. Engineering is tough, but I know—in what Yeats called “my deep heart's call"—that this is what I'm supposed to do with my life.

Experts say there are about 6,500 languages spoken throughout the world. But the United Nations guesses that about half of these languages are in danger of disappearing.
One organisation seeking to save world languages is Wikitongues. It has a simple goal:to provide the tools and support that people need to save their languages. When a language disappears, many other things can go away as well. For example, parts of a community's culture, knowledge and identity can also be lost.
Because of this, Udell, co-founder of Wikitongues, believes the process of bringing languages back must be done by community members themselves. He said:"There is no way an outside organisation can save some people's language for them."
Wikitongues was started in 2016 as an open Internet collection of world languages. The self-described"community” is operated by volunteers from around the world. The collection is in the form of language videos that people speaking the language add to the Wikitongues websites.
Udell says saving languages does count. There are many examples of languages that disappeared but later returned to use. “Hebrew was extinct in the fourth century BCE, and was revived (复兴) in the 1800s. Now once again,it's the mother tongue of half of the world's Jewish population." Another example is a native American tribe. The tribe's language went extinct in the 1940s, but the tribe was able to successfully build up a “language recovery” in recent years.
One of Wikitongues’ volunteers is Theron Kolokwe, who lives in Namibia. His native language is Subiya which is spoken by about 30,000 people.
Kolokwe is hoping his involvement with Wikitongues can help keep Subiya and other African languages from going extinct.“"I want the world to know my language," Kolokwe said. But his goal goes beyond just sharing his language with others through video. He is also working to create a dictionary and language teaching materials that can be used in schools.
8. How many languages are in danger of disappearing?
A.About 6,500. B.About 3,250.
C.About 13,000. D. About 1,800.
9. What is the goal of Wikitongues?
A. To help people save their languages.
B. To support people who are in need of help.
C. To provide tools for the poor.
D. To help volunteers from around the world.
10.Why is Kolokwe involved in volunteering?
A. He has no chance to speak his native language.
B.He dislikes speaking English and Afrikaans.
C. He wants to stop his native language from dying out.
D. He hopes to teach his language in school himself.
11. Which one is the best title for the passage?

A group of second-year college students have discovered hidden writing on a page from a book from the 1500s , using a special camera system they built.
Surprisingly, finding hidden writing on very old documents isn't all that unusual. In fact, there's even a special name for documents like this:a palimpsest(再生羊皮纸卷).
Long ago, writing was done on parchment—thin, dried animal skins specially prepared for writing. But parchment wasn't easy to make and wasn't cheap. So it became common to erase the old writing off a parchment and then reuse it for another piece of writing. That's what creates a palimpsest.
The writing erased off the parchment can't be seen directly, but scientists have learned ways to use special lighting to reveal the original writing. But it's unusual for young college students to discover palimpsests.
Last year, first-year students at the Rochester Institute of Technology took part in a class that brought together many students to take on a project as a group. The project was to build a special camera system that could take pictures using different kinds of light.
Over the summer, the students working on the imaging camera managed to finish it. When they were done, they borrowed several old parchments from the collection at the school's Cary Graphic Arts Collection. When they put one of the pages under their camera system with UV light, the hidden writing suddenly appeared. Under the UV light, handwriting in French could easily be seen behind the fancy writing and decorations normally visible on the page.
Zoe, a student involved in the project, said, “This was amazing because this document has been in the Cary Collection for almost 10 years and no one noticed it." The students are even more excited because even though the parchment is no longer part of a book, they know where 29 other pages from the same book are. The students, who are now working with others to locate the other parchments, hope these, too, will have hidden writing and that they can figure out what it means.
12. What was parchment designed for in ancient times?
A. Writing. B. Decorating. C. Imaging. D. Collecting.
13. What does the underlined word"reveal" in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Heat up. B. Bring out.

A. Make a handwriting-recognising camera.
B. Identify what the parchments are made of.
C. Track the origin of the palimpsests in the Cary Collection.
D. Discover hidden writing and its meaning on more parchments.
15. What's the purpose of this text?

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
"Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?"Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, \ensuremath{Mum} ,"Peter said. “Mr White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I've been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them."
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last,it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,"Mr White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
"The second word: contribution,"Mr White said.
"So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr White. “I am to mark your papers now,"he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter,David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!"
Mr White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,"Peter thought.
After Mr White gave the test paper back,Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word"contribusion"confused him. It didn't seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,"he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
"What am I to do?"Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I'm a master at spelling. If I tell Mr White one of my spelling words is wrong,I'll have to give my prize back, or I'll become an example for telling a lie."
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper,Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person."

New evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters may train cognitive (认知的) abilities, which are not developed by learning other languages and writing systems.
A study conducted by researchers from the UK's Wellcome Trust found that people who speak Chinese use both temporal lobes (颗叶) of their brain to understand the language. This is very different from English-language speakers who use only the left temporal lobe. Speakers of Chinese use intonation (语调) to tell between completely different meanings of particular words, which needs stronger cognitive abilities.
Besides, the practice of handwriting, especially of Chinese characters, will aid the development of motor skills, learning shapes and letters and will keep the mind sharp. Through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, researchers found that neural (神经的) activity in children who practiced printing letters by hand was more strengthened than those who just looked at them. Compared with English, mostly written in line and from left to right, Chinese characters have more complex in structure(复杂的结构).Their writing involves strokes (笔画) in all four directions: up, down, left, and right. The movement of the fingers and hand helps improve neural activity in the working, thinking, and memory of the brain of the learners.
Evidence also suggests that there is a connection between the learning of Chinese and math skills. Researchers from New Zealand noticed that Asian children educated in their own languages appear to have gained a greater understanding of math ideas than English-speaking children. During the natural learning process of Chinese, the student is learning basic math ideas. Math skills are included in character writing because it includes skills such as counting, grouping, ordering, and identifying similarities and differences.
While the research on the relationship between the learning of Chinese and cognition is not yet fully clear, there is good evidence to suggest that learning Chinese tones and characters represents an added challenge to language learning.
4.What is the text centred on?
A.Why Asian children are better at math test.
B. Why Chinese is a difficult language to learn.
C. How learning Chinese benefits our cognition.
D. How Chinese writing differs from English writing.
5.What does the studybyUK's Wellcome Trust show?

A. By offering supporting findings. B. By comparing former research.

If you think people in London will have more sunshine, cheaper fruits and no need to bring an umbrella at any time, think again. London could be facing severe drought, as Barcelona did in 2008, when it nearly ran out of drinking water.
Hundreds of other major cities worldwide could be facing droughts, flooding, storms, and other climate catastrophes, said the study conducted by the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich University.
The study predicted the future climate conditions of 520 major cities worldwide, and paired those predictions with the conditions of cities today. By 2050, Seattle will feel like San Francisco, and New York will feel like Virginia Beach, according to the report.
An estimated 77% of cities around the world will see their climate conditions dramatically change, indicating “the global scale of this climate change threat and associated risks for human health,” the study warned.
Regions with northern latitudes, including most of Europe, will face the most dramatic temperature changes. In London, for example, the warmest month will rise by 5.9°C , leading to a mean annual temperature rise of 2.1°C :
However, the danger is different in tropical regions—temperatures there won't rise by much, but the rains are expected to change significantly. This year, the monsoon(季风) rains that bring relief each year came weeks late in some places in India, extending nationwide droughts and leaving people struggling for drinking water. Then when the monsoon rains do arrive, they come so fast and so heavy that cities flood, leaving dozens dead. What's worse, according to the study, of the 22% of cities that are facing unknown, currently non-existent climate conditions, 64% are in the tropics.
8.According to the new study, what will the situation be like in London in 2050?
A. The life cost will be lower.
B. People will get sunburned easily.
C. Serious water shortage will strike London.
D. There is no need to bring an umbrella.
9. What does the underlined word “catastrophes" mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Disasters. B. Conditions. C. Predictions. D. Changes
10.Why does the author mention the situation in India?
A. To prove temperatures are changing greatly.
B.To compare it with the situation in other cities.
C. To show the differences between different regions.
D. To explain what's happening in tropical regions.
11. Where does the text probably come from?
A. A geography textbook. B. A travel guide.
C. A study report. D. A science fiction.

Deep down, everyone wants to be understood. The study of children aged 3 to 12 years old was led by Seyda Ozgaliskan, a psychological scientist at Georgia State University, whose research tries to understand how language affects the way people construct and express ideas, which can be seen in gestures.
As one kind of non-verbal communication, gestures may indicate how someone is feeling and could perhaps reveal insights into children's cognitive abilities as they develop, so Ozqaliskan thinks.
In this latest study, 100 children were asked first to describe an action with words and hand movements, and then to describe the same action without speaking using only their hands. Half the children were native English speakers, and the other 50 kids spoke Turkish as their first language. English and Turkish make for a good comparison because they differ in terms of how speakers of each language describe events.
"If you're speaking Turkish and want to describe someone running into a house, you have to chunk it up. You say, ‘he's running and then he enters the house,'" explains Ozgalhskan. "But if it's in English, they'll just say ‘he ran into the house,’ all in one compact sentence." “We wanted to find out whether gesture does or does not follow these linguistic (语言的) differences and how early do children learn these patterns,” she adds.
When children spoke and gestured at the same time, Turkish-speaking children ordered their gestures the same as they wouldsay a sentence, and English-speaking children pressed theirs into one movement. However, when describing the same scenes without speaking, the language-specific differences in gestures had seemingly evaporated (蒸发), which echoes Ozgalhskan's earlier work with adults and further proves that language can influence nonverbal representations of events.
Ozcaliskan and colleagues suggest their findings, although tentative (尝试性的),hint at the possibility that we all share some fundamental non-verbal communication system that gets overridden once we start learning language. Of course, this research interpreted abstract gestures from a few hundred subjects—hardly enough data to support such a big claim, but certainly an inviting idea to explore.
12. Why did the study employ children of different native languages?
A. To test linguistic influences on non-verbal expression. B. To uncover the universal meaning of a specific gesture. C. To recognize how speakers of each language describe events. D. To prove the same gesture has different meanings in distinct cultures
13. What does the phrase “chunk it up” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Cut it out. B. Join it up.
C. Break it down. D. Pair it off.
14. What does Ozcaliskan think of their findings?
A. Conclusive. B. Worthwhile.
C. Pioneering. D. Groundless.
15.Which of the following sentence best summarize the new findings?
A.Gestures influence human linguistic development.
B. Non-verbal communication conveys more than words.
C. A shared non-verbal communication system might exist.
D. Cultural settings decide the way people construct their ideas.

Learning a new language is more than a skill. It's also a way to improve your memory and your concentration. _16_ If you're a teenager preparing for a coming exam, it is a great time to learn a new language well. The following steps will tell you how to learn a new language.
Build your vocabulary.
Building vocabulary is important for learning a new language. _ 17_ Knowing between 4, 000 and 10,000 words in a language typically makes you an advanced speaker, but you likely can communicate in everyday situations after mastering at least 1,0o0 words.
18
Since speaking and listening are important communication parts, you should practice these skills regularly as you learn your new language. Look for opportunities to listen to someone speak your target language so you can train your ear to hear the sounds of the words and the rhythm of the sentences. Copy what you hear to strengthen the sounds. You can practice through conversations with others.
Acceptmistakes andlearnfromthem.
Mistakes are learning opportunities, which are a normal part of the process when learning
a language. You may choose the wrong word or use the present tense form of a verb when talking about what happened last week. 19
Set aside time to practice.
20 According to the US Department of State's Foreign Service Institute, a native English speaker typically needs between 600 and 750 class hours to learn languages. To establish language learning habits, find ways to make practice easy.
A. Practice speaking and listening.
B. Take advantage of language learning resources.
C. Learning a new language takes time and regular practice.
D. You can watch television shows in the language you are learning.
E. When you make a mistake, pay attention to the response you get.

The New York Marathon (马拉松) is my goal for this year. I know I am never going to win a race but now, when I get anything negative, I will think of the kind gentleman who really believed, “You very good... you very fast."
At the time, I was living in the Bay Area, and my mother had come to visit for a few days. On the last day of her stay, I was preparing to go out for a run. I picked up a T-shirt I just bought the other day from a Chinese clothing shop—it had some Chinese characters on the front, and a scene of Honolulu Chinatown on the back. I didn't speak Chinese, but somehow this special T-shirt was quite soft and good for exercise. Working in a very negative environment, I found morning runs very beneficial—body tired but mind awake.
And I had always met an elderly Chinese gentleman walking on the opposite side of the trail (道路) when I was running on other mornings. I had always said “Good morning” and he had always smiled warmly and nodded his head slightly.
As I was going out the door, my mother suddenly said, “I don't think running is so hotthat famous runner died." I started to recount what I had read about Jim Fixx, and how running had probably been the contributing factor to his living far longer than most of the other members of his family, but I knew there was absolutely no point.
As I started running on my favorite trail, I found I couldn't shake my mother's statement. I was so discouraged that I could hardly run. I began thinking, “Why do I run at all? Serious runners probably think Ilook silly! I might have a heart attack on the trail—my dad had a fatal (致命的) heart attack at 50 years old, and he was seemingly in better shape than I am."

2.请按如下格式作答。

Upon hearing the man's words, I felt more unexplained strength in my step.

(2023·新课标ⅡI卷)Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo's students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores. “The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks," she says. “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful." Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.
Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. “We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they're eating differently," Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program's benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo's special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful."

3. Which of the following best describes the impact of the program?
A. Far-reaching. B. Predictable.
C. Short-lived. D. Unidentifiable.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?

(2024·新课标 I卷)Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published, it's vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript (原稿). _5 No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.
I keep two reference books close-by on my desk: dictionary and thesaurus (同义词词典). I don't trust my laptop's spellchecker. 6 Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I'm old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers. I use the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Collins Thesaurus.
7 It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced.
In addition, I have an old two-volume copy of theShorter Oxford Dictionary, picked up a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just 99 pence. Of course, with its 2,672 pages, it's not exactly short. It contains around 163, 000 words, plus word combinations and idiomatic phrases. 8 However, if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there's nothing better.
For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755.“To make dictionaries is dull (乏味) work,” wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of “dull". _9 A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience.

Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. One of the major headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each floor, hallways stretched in four directions, leading to classrooms, laboratories, and teachers’ offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a library, a cafeteria, and a gym.
Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didn't exist.
In her first PE class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile" was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to her grandfather's, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car!
When Coach Pitt blew his whistle (哨子), Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. “It's just the beginning,” she thought. “I'll come in last for sure."
Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling desperate, Eva started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word "mile". Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved (拐弯).After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap. One lap turned into two, then three, then four.

Booking your next vacation to space with out-of-this-world views could soon be a reality. Orbital Assembly Corporation announced two new station concepts designed with space tourism accommodations. One of the stations, called Pioneer, could orbit Earth as early as 2025.
The Gateway Foundation circulated ideas for a space hotel in 2019. The goal of the stations is to run a space business park that can serve as a home away from home with room for offices and tourists. Orbital Assembly was founded by the Gateway Foundation team as a way to help make these dreams come true.
The proposed Pioneer station can accommodate 28 people. The second station, Voyager, scheduled to open in 2027, can hold up to 400 people. “The goal has always been to make it possible for large numbers of people to live, work and thrive in space," says Orbital Assembly's COO Tim Alatorre.
Both stations look like a wheel and will feature artificial gravity that allows guests to move comfortably on each station. Pioneer features five modules built around the rotating"Gravity Ring" architecture design. Tourists may still feel some weightlessness but will also be able to drink out of a cup and won't have to be tied to a bed to sleep. The gravity works similar to how a spinning bucket pushes the water out to the sides of the bucket and stays in place, Alatorre explains. Near the middle of the station, there will be no artificial gravity, but gravity gradually increases further away from the center.
While the Pioneer station will be smaller than Voyager, guests can still shower, eat and drink sitting down in areas with gravity. Each station is furnished like luxury hotels on Earth. Voyager will feature a restaurant and suites with views of Earth.
A significant barrier to space travel is the cost. However, Orbital Assembly expects tourists to seek a trek into space as space travel eventually becomes less expensive. “We envision our Pioneer and Voyager space stations as the ultimate ecotourism destinations. Once people get to space,it will change their perspective about Earth," Alatorre says. “Space travel is still at its early stage, and we're excited to do our part to push it forward to help improve life on Earth."
4. What is the goal of the Pioneer and Voyager space stations?
A. To revolutionise space travel.
B. To serve as luxury hotels in space.
C. To offer a unique and immersive experience.
D. To enable large scale living and working in space.
5. What do the Pioneer and Voyager stations have in common?
A. Open time. B. Artificial gravity.
C. Suites with views. D. Passenger capacity.
