Vases less than 10cm high, but retaining the proportions of a larger piece, are often
described as doll's house porcelains. During the late 17th century it became
popular amongst wealthy Dutch ladies to create lavish doll's houses, complete with
scale replicas of all their imported luxuries, including Kangxi blue and white
porcelain. They were not meant for children's play, but rather a counterpart to the
'Cabinet of Curiosities' much admired amongst fashionable men. Original,
complete doll's houses are now rare, but an 18th century version can be seen
preserved in the Gemeentemuseum in the Hague.

明十六世紀 松石綠地琺華人物故事圖紋梅瓶
On fahua-decorated ceramics, thin, raised slip lines are used to outline areas of the
decoration. Once fired, enamels are applied and the raised slip lines inhibit
different coloured enamels from flowing into each other. This style on stoneware or
porcelain resembles cloisonné metalwork. It is unusual to have turquoise enamel as
the prominent colour, as deep blue is often favoured.

Cf. Jars like the present lot are a very well known form of Han Dynasty tomb pottery;
they often represent either Mount Bo or Mount Kunlun, which are two well known
Daoist mountains. From the bears on the legs, chosen for their protective powers, to
the Animals of the Four Directions strategically placed in the undulating peaks of
the mountains, the decoration on such jars is typically ripe with auspicious symbols,
and evokes the journey of the deceased to the immortal realms.
Sometimes catalogued as incense burners, vessels of this type are found in most
major museum collections in the world; an example in the British Museum, museum
no. 1909,0512.29; one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, no.13.100.13a, b; and
