Upgrading areas around the home is easy with MAPEI installation products.

Basement renovation is a common project, but their original construction

requires special consideration regarding subfloor moisture issues. MAPEI

offers total moisture-mitigation system solutions that will keep your new

basement firmly bonded and looking good for years to come.

The capacity of the ground to let water pass through is called permeability and

depends on the presence of voids in the solid material which forms the ground

itself. If the voids are formed by pores, it is called permeability by porosity. If

the voids are formed by fractures, on the other hand, it is called permeability by

fracturation. In both cases, only the voids which are connected to each other allow

water to move.

From a theoretical point of view, good concrete has a very low coefficient of

permeability, so it may be considered more or less impermeable to water under

pressure. UNI 9858 : 1991 (replaced by EN 206-1 : 2001) established that for a

concrete to be considered impermeable, its water/cement ratio must be < 0.55.

In real conditions, in spite of the most modern production techniques being

employed, it is extremely difficult to make concrete which is perfect throughout its

entire bulk. In fact, even the smallest imperfection (cracks, honeycombs, etc.) and

construction and structural joints form a preferential passage for water.

There are various phenomena which generate cracks in concrete, such as

shrinkage during curing, seismic activity, settling of foundations and vibrations

caused by traffic. It is obviously impossible to keep all these phenomena

under control and be certain that there are no cracks in the concrete after

it has been poured. Also, water which penetrates the concrete is acid, and

therefore aggressive for both the base components of the concrete and for the

reinforcement rods. Considering the above, the only solution to adopt to stop

water penetrating the concrete and infiltrating into the rooms below ground level,

is to use a waterproofing system.

In the case that the water under pressure, due to the presence of groundwater,

is in direct contact with the structure and will have to be considered when

choosing both the waterproofing system and the type of structure itself.

Therefore, when groundwater is present, even if only during certain periods of

the year, a perfect waterproofing structure should be installed which has the

capacity of contrasting the lift from water under pressure.

PROCEDURE 步骤

1. Remove loose and damaged areas from

the concrete base, repair and reinforce by

Mapei structural strengthening product

ranges.

2. Check all the cracks and leaking areas,

then prepare for the sealing work.

3. For areas that water seeps through

constantly, seal it off with corresponding

waterproof mortars or sealants.

4. Application of waterproofing materials on

concrete substrate, for both wall and floor.

Characteristics:

•Suitable for substrates with excessive residual

humidity;

•Treating damp concrete surfaces before

applying any flooring systems to avoid

damage by water vapour;

•Good capacity of reticulating on damp

surfaces, even if they are very smooth (like

tiles, marble, etc) and of forming a compact

layer;

•By diluting it accordingly with water, adding

0.25 or 0.5 quartz sand to obtain a smoothing

mortar for use on uneven concrete surfaces

when a high mechanical strength is required.

More details about Triblock P

• Compressive strength: 51MPa compressive

strength = 2040kgf heavy loading on a 20mm

x 2 0mm x 20mm cube.

• Bonding strength: 2.0MPa means that an area

of 10mm x 10mm can withstand a pull-out

force of 200kg.

• Impermeability strength: resistance to negative

water pressure = 0.8MPa, which is equivalent

to 8 atmospheric pressure = pressure of 80

metre deep water column.

• Osmotic pressure ratio: This is the ratio of

the impermeability strength of Triblock P

coating to the mortar substrate. According

to the test requirement, mortar layer with

water impermeability (0.3MPa impermeability

strength) is adopted, and the protection can be

increased to 267% when Triblock P is applied

on it.

MAPEI AND ECO-SUSTAINABILITY IN BUILDING

WORK

70% of Mapei’s research and development work is

dedicated to the development of eco-sustainable

products. Mapei was awarded Certiquality

certification in 2016 for their EPD (Environmental

Product Declaration) issuing process. EPD’s

are transparent, open documents verified and

certified by an external body. They describe the

impact of product on the environment during

its entire life cycle by measuring its impact

using standardised LCA (Life Cycle Assessment)

methods.

Mapei is also committed to the development of

products with low emissions of volatile organic

compounds (VOC) that help improve the

quality of air in internal surroundings, products

which are tested both within the company,

thanks to the cutting-edge instruments and

equipment available in our Research and

Development laboratories, and by external

laboratories. To identify those products with

low VOC emissions Mapei decided to adopt the

voluntary German EMICODE labelling system,

particularly strict classification criteria as defined

by GEV (Gemeinschaft Emissionskontrollierte

Verlegewerkstoffe, Klebstoffe und Bauprodukte).

The China Environmental labeling not only

certifies Mapei products for complying with all

the technical requirements, but also confirms

that Mapei possesses sound qualification and

well regulated production management system.

Specifically, Mapei is an enterprise with operation

in compliance with the Chinese regulations

and policies. Moreover, the management

system, especially for the quality control and

environmental protection, should be recognized

as leading position in the market. Hence, the

labeling affirms Mapei product quality as well as

in obtaining credits in the LEED and BREEAM

environmental protocols. GEV only grants

the right to use this special marking to those

companies which undergo severe periodic

quality controls and assessments carried out

by the institute and consists in the following
