When it comes to finding friends, the first step is understanding exactly what friendship is. Does it mean you have each other in your contact list? Or that you see each other every Tuesday when you go to the gym? Not really. It's not enough to see a person in a book group each week and enjoy their company. In order to truly be considered a friend, he or she has to believe you are their friend also.
This can be tough because most people have a different idea of what friendship really means. Some people trust new people instantly, and accept them into their heart without question. Other people, however, might be “friendly” to someone but not consider them a friend for quite a while. Perhaps these people need to get to know someone better before they consider them as friends. Or perhaps they already have a lot of friends and therefore wouldn't consider someone they occasionally (偶尔)meet at social events a friend.
It should go without saying that real friends make you fel good, rather than bring you down. People who are truly your friends put your relationship above being right or trying to feel superior (更好的) if someone often puts you down, he or she is not a real friend. However, people have bad days and act imperfectly, so there are times when a true friend will be negative or hurt your feelings. The way to decide if they are really a friend is to look at the whole of your relationship. If someone is really your friend, they act in a kind manner. They do nice things for you. ?
The other key component (要素) of friendship is a real, face-to-face relationship. This isn't to say that after you have built a friendship, you can't still be friends with them once they move away. However in order to have a real friendship, you have to spend time with each other.

A. What makes a friendship last long.
B. What true friends are like.
C. How to make true friends.
D. How to keep a friendship.
( ) 4. What can be inferred about friendship from the last paragraph?

Growing up, we didn't have much money. Actually, we had very little. We had holes in the floor, a cold house, worn-out shoes, few clothes, and little food. With three little mouths to feed, my daddy worked as a guard in a middle school and then farmed our own small field until dark. We could have easily applied for welfare (福利), but my daddy wouldn't think of it. Our family was full of love and proud of hard work. Daddy provided the best he could for us, and mama made our clothes on her old sewing machine.
It was probably clear to all the teachers and students at school just how poor we were. Then I was in the third grade, in Mrs. Harper's class. One day, Mrs. Harper brought a huge box of toys to school to give to “poor"” children. Everyone was invited to bring some of his/her own toys from home to put in the box. Needless to say, I was disappointed, because I had hardly any toys of my own to offer.
My eyes got big when I looked into that box. It was like a dream world to me—so many colorful toys! Clearly, Mrs. Harper saw the curious look on my face, and although I never asked, with a smile, she offered to let me pick out two toys for myself from the box. I was so thankful and thought that I was the luckiest girl in the whole world!
When I got home excitedly, I couldn't wait to show mama what I brought from the school. She saw the toys and asked where I got them. I was proud to tell her about the box for the poor Schildren and that Mrs. Harper had let me pick two toys from the box! Mama thought for a few seconds and said in a very sweet way, “No...no, you can't keep these two toys."

Last week, my sister and I were talking about how many of our friends had phones. My sister said she thought it was dumb that kids in high school had them, especially taking the phones to school, since most of your friends were at school anyway. As she said, “Why would they call you when they could see you in class?" I agreed with her. I mean, it's not likely that your friends are going to call you when you're in class!
But the next day after school, when two of her friends came over to our house, my sister told her friends she thought taking a phone to school was totally cool and she couldn't wait to get one. When I reminded her that just the evening before she thought taking a phone to school was a dumb idea, she stared at me and if looks could kill, I'd be dead!
When her friends left, I asked her if she really had changed her mind about wanting a phone to take to school. “No, "” she said. “But both of my friends have phones and take them to school, so I didn't want to tell them that I thought it was a dumb idea." O
You see, my sister just told her friends what she thought they wanted to hear. I think my sister works way too hard to fit in with her friends. Personally, I don't want to work that hardto have friends. I mean, what would be so terrible about my sister believing one thing about kids having phones and her friends believing something different? Besides, when your friends know where you stand in terms of how you feel or what you think is cool or uncool, they respect you. At least show respect for yourself by sticking up for what you believe in. And even if they don't agree with you, good friends will think you're cool for being true to yourself.

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let's go and have a look!" What we think about ourselves shows up in the things we say and do. We may even misinterpret the words and actions of others because of the view we hold of ourselves. It's important to see ourselves in the most positive light that we can. Seeing the good in ourselves helps us to do better, to be better.
We all have days when almost everything about our lives looks grey. On those days, it's easy to feel bad about ourselves. Looking on the bright side of things can help us transform tough times: “Just because I'm having a difficult time in one subject doesn't mean that I'm not a good student." or “Even though the girl I want to date won't go out with me, that doesn't mean I'm not a likable or lovable person."
The good news is that psychologists tell us that we are hurt less by the misfortunes of life than we are by how we see them. And this is never truer than when applied to how we see ourselves. Not only do we have the choice to paint the events and situations in our lives in the color that we choose, we also have the choice to paint ourselves in the color we choose. In other words, you get to choose whether the cup is half-full or half-empty when it comes to how you see yourself! ?
Many teens we heard from also know how important it is to cast a positive vote when it comes to their own self-worth, saying that self-esteem and actions went hand in hand. From becoming a better athlete to getting better grades, from being a friend to attracting better friends, from getting along with your parents to being granted more privileges, self-esteem plays a big role.

In 1991, there was a time when my friend and I worked in a backward African country, Niger, hit by sandstorms and burning heat. There were many things I found difficult about this place—the climate and beggars were my biggest headaches. So after finishing five months of nursing work there, we moved on to work at a health clinic in the neighboring country, Burkina Faso. “It's much greener in Burkina. Even the Coke tastes better,” the locals assured us.
Yet the fact was quite the opposite. Arriving by taxi at our destination in Burkina, we began to unload. All I wanted was to leave this hellhole! Then, walking through Burkina's streets one day, I was stopped by an old woman who thrust her hand in my face. “Cadeau (^gift’ in French)!
Cadeau!" she cried. I'd had enough! I was extremely tired of the country: its poverty, its thieves, the heat, the dust and.. everything! I told her angrily and firmly in French, “I have no ‘ cadeau'. I have no money. A thief stole all my money two weeks ago and now I can't get out of your country. I cannot give you anything. NOTHING!" The beggar woman listened atentively. To my great surprise, after hearing my words, she gave me a broad smile.

My mom received a large box of cookies from her property management company for Christmas. It was a lovely deed, but neither she nor I eat cookies so we decided to pass along the gift to someone who would really enjoy it. It ended up being a fun exercise of figuring out who to give the cookies to!
Airports are absolutely a busy place during the holidays; I figured, why not give them to a busy airport worker? I put them in with my stuff and brought them to the airport. I waited in line at the check-in counter for my flight home.
I had plenty of time to observe the line of airport workers, and I started wondering who would serve me and unknowingly become my gift receiver. When it became my turn, I approached the worker with my bag. He was pleasant but I could tell he was a bit tired from the holiday queues. He took my bag and gave me my boarding pass.
"Do you like cookies?" I asked. “Of course! Who doesn't?" he said.
“Here, Merry Christmas!" I said as I put down the already-wrapped cookie box on the counter.
心 He smiled and said “Thank you! Merry Christmas indeed!" and began to process the next passenger. I smiled and went on my way to the security line.
What could have been a boring, dull wait in a check-in line turned into an exciting wait to give something small to someone who could use a treat. I was content knowing that he had a box of cookies to look forward to after a long day at work.

When the night came, Maggie wanted to take the child to bed with her, but her mother said, “No, Eyou might roll over on it and break its head."
