(2024 福建泉州四校期中)Failure isn't the end, unless you let it be. Don't believe me? Here are four people who lived through failure before going on to become names known around the world.
A. His big family farm.
B. His successful art career.
C. His delicious milk chocolate candy.
D. His experience in making milk chocolate.
Disney began his career by being fired by a newspaper for not being creative enough. Later, his Mickey Mouse cartoons were rejected because they were considered to be “too scary for women". Also, The Three Little Pigs was turned down because it only had four characters. Thankfully, we have the Disney Company today because Disney chose to not listen to any of his critics but to press forward towards his dreams.
Walt Disney
King is a best-selling writer whose works have been made into several motion pictures. However, his first work was rejected 30 times, which led to King throwing it in the trash. Thankfully, his wife persuaded him to keep working at it, and—from that poor start—Carrie was born.
Stephen King
Milton Hershey
The man who blessed us with the sweet milk chocolate treat we all love wasn't a hit the first time around. He once worked for a local candy factory. But when he went out on his own, he failed miserably. Then he returned to the family farm and perfected the art of making delicious milk chocolate candy, which we enjoy today.
Theodor Geisel
This author struggled to write a novel that publishing companies would call “pure rubbish" several times—27 to be exact. The man just wouldn't quit, though. One fateful night, he ran into an old friend who was a children's literature editor. The friend agreed to publish Geisel's work. Better known today as Dr Seuss, Geisel was never again called a failure after his first book became a hit.

(2024 广东佛山南海区月考)Women have been making scientific discoveries since ancient times. Dozens of women have won the Nobel Prize in science, one of the highest honours in the world. Some women scientists never married, some worked with their husbands, and others raised large families. It has been difficult for women to be successful scientists.
In the early 1800s in England, Mary Anning became one of the first women recognized for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth. Mary and her father collected fossils(化 石) in their village on the south coast of Great Britain. Fossils are parts of plants or animals that have been saved in rocks for millions of years.
When she was only twelve years old, Mary became the first person to find the almost complete skeletons(骨架)of several animals that no longer existed on Earth. She didn't become famous for her discoveries at that time because she often sold her fossils to get money to support her family.
In 1891, a young Polish woman named Marie Sklodowska travelled to Paris to study Physics. She did so because she could not get a college education in Poland. She began working in the laboratory of a man named Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre Curie got married and made many discoveries together. They received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 along with another scientist. Marie Curie became the first person to be awarded a second Nobel Prize in 1911, this time in Chemistry. (2025 湖南长沙期中)Twenty years ago, the idea of sharing personal information publicly was uncommon. Nowadays, it's normal for young people to post updates about their lives and interact on the Internet regularly. Supporters of social media say it brings people closer together, and helps make friends, learn about different cultures, and celebrate events.
Yet, concerns arise over this lifestyle's impact, especially regarding the quantity and nature of shared information. Studies reveal that overuse of social media could be harmful. Researchers observed individuals′ moods before and after platform interactions and found that the more time people spent on social media, the more unhappy they felt.
This outcome has several reasons. Social media often features idealized content like beautiful vacations, lively events, and trendy outfits. Since negative experiences or unappealing images are rarely shared, it creates a false reality. Comparing these highlights to one's own life can contribute to depression, as people may perceive their lives as inferior. Even those sharing the positive content can get worried and stressed about how many likes and comments they get, and whether they are popular enough. Online bullying makes things worse, with people being mean and hurtful in their comments.
Since social media is a big part of our lives now, it's not going away. Research emphasizes finding a balance between our digital and physical existence. It's not necessary to cut off from the online world to be happy, but it's important to be aware of the selective image that the online world presents. Understanding that what we see online is a fraction of the complete story allows us to safeguard our mental health and enjoy life to the fullest.
8. What is the impact of inappropriate social media use according to the research?
A.It enhances online interactions.
B. It increases overall happiness.
C. It can lead to unhappiness.
D. It improves global connectivity.
9. Why might individuals feel stressed after posting the positive content on social media?
A. They are concerned that others misunderstand their posts.
B. They believe others lead happier lives.
C. They fear they may be cyber-bullied by others.
D. They worry about the quality of their posts.
10. How does the author develop the third paragraph of the article?
A. By providing examples.
B. By listing causes.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By describing process.
11. What is the author's main purpose in writing the article?
A. To encourage people to quit social media.
B. To discuss the benefits of social media.
C. To highlight the negative effects of social media.
D. To advocate balancing online and offline lives.

(2025 山东潍坊期中)Common house cats possess the ability to associate human words with images without instructions, a new research conducted by animal scientists at Azabu University in Japan has revealed. This discovery, published in the journal Scienti fic Reports , throws new light on cats' cognitive abilities and their potential for understanding human language.
The team designed an experiment to test cats' ability to form picture-word associations. The study involved 31 adult house cats and applied a methodology similar to those used in baby language development research. In the experiment, cats were shown short videos paired with nonsensical words ("keraru” and “parumo"). These videos were played repeatedly until the cats looked away. After a break, the same videos were shown, but with the spoken words disordered.
The results were striking: cats demonstrated longer viewing duration and pupil(瞳子L) expansion when the word-image pairings were switched, indicating puzlement and a search for explanation. This behaviour suggests that the cats had formed associations between the spoken words and the images they saw, even without any training.
"It is noteworthy that cats made the picture-word relation after only brief exposure,”" the researchers said. “Most cats habituated to the stimulus(刺激物) pairing after four trials, which means they received only nine-second exposures in two trials for each picture-word pair. " By comparison, trials involving human babies used at least four 20-second trials for a picture-word pair.
It's not clear why cats are able to form these associations so quickly and more work is needed to examine the question from both biological and developmental perspectives. The impacts of domestication on cats need to be investigated too, the researchers said. This is particularly crucial, as the research also indicated that cats might find it easier to form associations between objects and human speech rather than electronic sounds.
12. What is the new discovery about house cats?
A.They can be trained to please human.
B. They can read human's facial expressions.
C. They can link words to images without tips.
D. They can understand complex human language.
13. What was cats' reaction to the disordered words?
A. Confused. B. Fascinated. C. Calm. D. Indifferent
4. How does the cats' learning process compare to that of human babies?
A. The processes are similar in speed.
B.Cats learn faster than human babies.
C. Cats take longer to form associations.
D. Human babies learn with shorter exposure.
15.What could be the key focus for future study?
A. The biological development of cats.
B. The effects of domestication on cats.
C. The cat's talent for identifying objects.
D. The cats’ preference for electronic sounds.

Raelene seemed to be in trouble with her mother. It seemed like her mother was screaming all the time. Raelene couldn't bear it. She tried to keep to herself and out of her mother's way. At times she shut herself in her room but her mother would follow her in, still shouting at her and telling her to do things.
One day, when her mother had been screaming, Raelene went outside to get away from it all. Her pet dog, Crystal, came running up to her, tail wagging, but Raelene had had enough and screamed at Crystal. Crystal dropped her tail between her legs and turned around to run away, looking for a place to hide. Raelene saw how Crystal had run away when she screamed. She thought how it was like what she did when her mother screamed at her.
At school, Raelene was studying science and had learned about experiments, so she decided to carry out an experiment with Crystal. She sat down on the ground, closer to Crystal's height where she could see Crystal's nose and eyes peeping(偷看) around the corner of the house. Raelene began to talk to Crystal in a soft, gentle voice. This was the experiment. What she said and how she said it were different. Her words said Crystal was a bad dog for running away and hiding. However, she said it in a gentle, loving, and caring voice. Soon Crystal moved out from around the corner and came back with her tail wagging and her whole body full of excitement.
Raelene continued her experiment. She now told Crystal what a good dog she was and that she was the only one who seemed to understand Raelene—but how she did it was in a loud, shouting voice. Crystal again dropped her tail between her legs and ran around the corner.
"This is interesting,” thought Raelene. She now used the same loving words in a gentle, loving voice. Again Crystal emerged and rested her head on Raelene's lap.
Paragraph 1:
Raelene continued to experiment with different things.
Paragraph 2:
After that Raelene began to experiment when her mother was screaming.

(2025 安徽阜阳期中)Growing up in Ghana,I watched many foreign movies, and among them were the appealing Chinese films. The movie that truly inspired my imagination was Journey to the West. Despite the language barrier, this classic movie encouraged my curiosity about the Chinese language and culture. I made up my mind to understand the rich Chinese culture and language beyond just watching movies.
My journey to the East began in 2017 when I decided to study Chinese language and culture at university. My journey in learning Chinese was not without its challenges. I vividly remembered considering giving up after my very first lesson. The Chinese characters, tones, pronunciation and grammar were all vastly different from what I had been used to in the English language. However, as the class monitor, I had the opportunity to grow closer to my Chinese teacher, who provided me with encouragement and support, which helped me discard the idea of giving up. He shared with me the benefits of learning Chinese and the importance of taking it seriously.
To further my understanding of Chinese culture, I signed up to be a volunteer at the Confucius Institute. There, I participated in a variety of activities. My efforts paid off when I won an Excellent Volunteer Award and a Chinese Ambassadors Award.
In September 2023, I finally went on my journey to the East to follow my academic dreams. This journey has been truly amazing. The experience has been enriching, allowing me to be buried in Chinese culture, from its cuisine to the warmth of its people. I have also seen the wonders of Chinese-style modernization, from the subways and high-speed railways to driverless cars and AI robots serving food in hotels and restaurants. There have been times when I've left my computer and other valuables in the school library, only to return hours later and find everything untouched.

(2025 广东惠州期中)Robots did not write this sentence, or any other part of Nature. But that could change. Dramatic shifts in labour are reshaping society, the environment and the political landscape. Consider this disorienting estimate from the World Economic Forum: 65% of the children entering primary schools now will grow up to work in jobs that do not yet exist. This week, Nature asks, “What light is research shedding on the future of work, and how will the changes affect scientists′ working world?"
A news feature explores which jobs are most at risk of being replaced by artificial inteligence and machine learning, whether a gig economy(零工经济)will democratize(普及) work, and what programmes will best prepare workers. “There's a huge need and a huge opportunity to study the changes,” says economist Erik Brynjolfsson. And the scientific workforce is feeling these shifts. A career feature reports people doing research outside the traditional career path. “I love freedom," says Cecile Menard, an independent land-surface modeller in Edinburgh, the UK, “but for other people, it may be too stressful. "
Important lessons can be drawn from the past. Economic historian Robert Allen synthesizes(综合) three centuries of data to see when and where the relationship between wages and productivity is most like today's and finds that some regions are in uncharted(未标 注的) waters. These changes call for new socio-economic models and a revolution in education, concludes historian Yuval Noah Harari. And economist Ian Goldin argues that our era has more parallels with the Renaissance than the Industrial Revolution. This time, he urges, knowledge and enquiry must find a way to conquer prejudice and ignorance.
8.According to the estimate of the World Economic Forum,
A. 65% of the children will find new jobs B. some new jobs will appear in the future C. robots will replace humans in the future D. future jobs will remain the same as the present ones
9.What's Cecile Menard's attitude to the changes in future work?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful.
C. Positive. D. Indifferent.
10. How does the author organize the last paragraph?
A. By making comparison.
B. By quoting some specialists' perspectives.
C. By listing some important data.
D. By analysing the cause and effect.
11. Which is the best title for the passage?
A.How to Work Well B. The Past of Work C. The Benefit of Work D. The Future of Work

(2024广东广州一中月考)As new technology is introduced, there are many who worry about its influence on our current and future lifestylesparticularly when it comes to jobs. It is a current belief that with the rise of automation and artificial intelligence( Al), many people's jobs, and therefore their livelihoods, are likely to be lost.
Automation in the workplace is nothing new. Machines have been performing dull tasks on our behalf for years, allowing us to escape many repetitive jobs. A recent report from the McKinsey Global Institute states that nearly two thirds of all jobs could have at least 30% of their activities automated by 2030. However, McKinsey also believes that this new technology will also “create new occupations that do not exist today, much as technologies in the past have done". As the horse gave way to the car, hostlers(马夫) became mechanics and mechanized fields drove up wages and created more long-term roles than it destroyed.
"It's an evolution of work,” says Ian Barkin, a robotic process automation specialist. As low-skilled jobs are taken on by AI, people will need to learn new skills. “This calls on us to focus on up-skilling. Technology can lead to job reductions but it doesn't have to,” says Barkin.
Whether or not robots and AI will leave us all jobless remains to be seen. Current views on the subject are mixed. Increased automation could indeed lead to a loss of some jobs, but at the same time is likely to create many more as new skills are required. Will they balance out?
12. How do many people feel about the influence of AI?
A. Quite delighted. B. Quite surprised.
C. A sense of fear. D. A sense of pride.
13. What might be McKinsey's attitude to the rise of automation?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative.
C. Critical. D. Approving.
14. What does the underlined word “up-skilling" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Taking risks. B. Learning new skills C. Adapting to the world. D. Thinking positively.
15. Which can best express the author's view on automation?
A. Every coin has two sides.
B. Where there is life, there is hope.
C. It's better to do well than to say well.
D. A bad workman quarrels with his tools.

Mother's Gift
I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my home. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed(排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped on stage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's(旁白员) part to the play and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practise my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine(藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with dabs of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds,”" she said, pulling it up by its roots. "From now on, we'll have only roses in this garden. "
"But I like dandelions," I protested. “All flowers are beautifuleven dandelions.'
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that. " Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled encouragingly.
Paragraph 1:
"But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said.
Paragraph 2:
After the play, I took home the dandelion.

Walking through an airport is never easy. Now imagine doing it if you were blind. That's the problem faced by Chieko Asakawa, a computer scientist and IBM researcher. Asakawa often flies between the US and Japan, making the journey monthly. If travelling alone, she has to be helped at both ends of the flight, which sometimes includes endless waiting. Searching for a better replacement led Asakawa to invent a high-tech suitcase that helps get her to the place she wants to go safely.
"I never relax when I travel alone,” she says. “I always think about what technology will help me travel easier, quicker and more comfortably." It was this restlessness that led to the AI suitcase.
The idea has been in development since 2017 through research between IBM, other Japanese companies, and Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. Asakawa says there are hopes to commercialize the suitcase and a pilot scheme(试验计划) is planned to use it in an airport, a shopping mall and other public spaces. Though the suitcase is too full of tech to hold any clothes, that could change in the future, she says.
A runner, Asakawa held Olympic dreams as a child, but a swimming accident at age 1l caused her to gradually lose her sight until, aged 14, she became totally blind. As a grown-up she has paid attention to developing accessibility technology. Among her creations is “a Designer", whose aim is to make designers’ websites more user-friendly, and “IBM Home Page Reader", the first voice browser(浏览器) to allow Internet access for blind people. Asakawa has won industry and government awards and been introduced into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame.
“The blind people usually use a white cane(手杖) or a guide dog. It will open up many doors for blind people, because we'd be able to go anywhere by ourselves. Without new technology, we cannot make our society more inclusive,” Asakawa says. “A smart suitcase is a great showcase for how AI and technology can change the lives of the blind. "
8.What drove Asakawa to invent the suitcase?
A. The suggestion from an international airport.
B. The wish to finish her trip without any help.
C. The huge business advantages of the suitcase.
D. The experience of keeping the blind company.
9. What can we say about the suitcase?
A. It can hold clothes. B. It has yet to be widely used.
C. It has proved unhelpful for the blind. D. It is ready to be commercially produced.
10. What does Asakawa think of the suitcase?
A. It will encourage more scientists to help the blind.
B.It will make the public care for the blind more.
C. It will hugely free up the blind's movements.
D. It will change people's way of travelling.
11.What is the best title for this text?
A. Technology Is Changing People's Lives Rapidly B. A Robot Suitcase Makes Travelling Easy and Popular C. Travelling Alone Requires Much Courage for the Blind D. A Smart Suitcase Could Replace Canes and Guide Dogs for the Blind

(2025 湖南长沙期中改编)Musk,Hawking,Gates—the tech giants have redoubled their warnings about how we could destroy ourselves with technology. But they're not talking about deliberately pushing buttons to trigger disaster. They mean accidentally killing ourselves with something that we invent for our benefit.
It's a little embarrassing to have to admit that accidental deaths are increasing in a world that our ancestors made safer for hundreds of years. Our grandparents saw the invention of the automobile, the bulldozer(推土机)and so on, and they made them all safer. However, nowadays, we put a smartphone on every hand, and now more than 1,000 distraction-related crashes happen on our roads every day. Kids and pets die of heatstroke(中暑) inside cars—we are on track to set a new record for hot car deaths in 2021. We may not have to worry about AI, but our innovations are quietly outpacing our ability.
We place blind trust in complex systems that reveal little about how they work. It seems that we have superhuman abilities, and consumers seem willing to play along. They drive at a speed of 80mph with a phone and a cup of coffee, and they are proud of their multitasks. Sure, other people on phones are dangerous, but you can smoothly switch your attention and notice when any emergency occurs, right?
When we misjudged a situation in the past, we got immediate feedback. But technology can place the consequences of our missteps at a distance. Delayed reactions, complex chain reactions—these are all part of how technology works. But having adapted to a world of new inventions, we are crazy about driverless cars, seldom stopping to consider what could go wrong later down the road. Worse still, technology is even hacking our feedback system. We get excited when we check our phone while driving. Edith Harbaugh, whose company, Launch Darkly, specializes in the controlled release of new technology into the wild, pointed out that we're creating a dangerously unbalanced system of actions and rewards: “We are not given ice creams every time we do something safe.”
So it is too late to worry about threatening technology, which is upon us. The modern world is breaking everything we know about staying safe. If we have any hope of staying alive with the rise of the machines, we are going to need to learn to survive the things we have today.
12. Why is the warning of tech giants mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To give a definition. B. To highlight their wisdom.
C. To offer background information. D. To introduce the topic.
13. Which is NOT the reason why technology is threatening?
A. We trust complex systems blindly.
B. We create too many inventions.
C. Our ability cannot keep pace with the innovations.
D. Technology can't give us feedback immediately.
14. If the passage continues, what may be talked about?
A. The rise of the machines.
B. The destruction of the world.
C. The measures to deal with the problem.
D. The worries about threatening technology.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Technology is benefiting us. B. Technology is threatening our safety. C. Technology is a double-edged sword. D. How should we deal with technology?

It was a Saturday in June, 1988. Out of a 16-year-old's early summer boredom, I had set up a tent in our rural yard and intended to sleep in it, but I stayed in the house to finish watching the Lakers play-off game. It was almost midnight and Dad had been asleep upstairs for hours when someone knocked at the front door. It never occurred to me not to answer it.
To my surprise, it was a girl about my age with a bloody cut on her forehead. “Hi. I'm Maria. What's wrong with you?" I asked her with concern. Awkward and embarrassed, she replied: “I'm Jane. I..." She hesitated and then asked me carefully, “May I stay here for the night? I'll be off tomorrow morning. " Seeing her uneasiness, I comforted her, “Take it easy, Jane. Stay with me tonight. ” I invited her into the house.
Looking around, Jane appeared to have calmed down. “Let me treat your injury first," I said and she agreed.
I cleansed and bandaged(包扎) her injured forehead and then gave her some bread and bacon to eat. “Want to sleep in my tent?" I asked her and she nodded. Having left her in the bathroom, I went to look for another sleeping bag. When I returned, Jane was seated on the sofa, her face clouded by sadness.
Walking across the dark yard, I accompanied Jane into the tent. We lay down side by side. Seized by curiosity and concern, I constantly turned over, wondering what had happened to her and how she came here. Jane seemed to have sensed that and started to speak.
Jane's father died of cancer years before. Her mother did odd cleaning jobs to raise her. Money was tight but her mother tried to do what she could to satisfy Jane. Several weeks before, Jane accidentally saw fancy white dress in the store window, which she fell in love with at first sight. She excitedly told her mother about that, who promised to buy it as her birthday gift. From then on, Jane was looking forward to it.
Paragraph 1:
Jane's 16th birthday came but her mother didn't get home until the evening.
Paragraph 2:
Having told her story, Jane said she regretted being inconsiderate to her mum.

Technology and Life
It is a great honour for me to deliver a speech concerning “Technology and Life”. With the rapid development of technology, its influences on our daily lives are everywhere.
Thanks to high-tech, we can stay connected with friends and families, no matter where they are. We can easily access information, and even order food and groceries with a few taps on our mobile phones. However, technology also brings negative influences. With the constant exposure to the screens, our eyes get tired. What's worse, there is always a concern about privacy and data security.
Despite these drawbacks,I think technology's positive impacts outweigh the negative ones. So, we need to use technology in a way that maximizes its benefits while minimizing its harm.

Putting the flower in my pocket, I could feel the warmth it brought from my chest. The next day, with the flowers my mother gave me, I held my head high and began my performance confidently at school.
Paragraph 2:
After the play,I took home the dandelion.Mother stood there, smiling at me. My heart was full of gratitude to my mother. I couldn't wait to walk up to her and slowly took out the flower and put it in her hand. Unfortunately, no matter how careful I was, the flower still went out of shape, leaving only a bare stem. Seeing how sad it made me, my mother smiled at me. “Now it has become seeds, indicating your success,” she explained. I couldn't help laughing. In the world, each flower brings joy in its own way.

Glimpsing Susan again at his side, the hotelkeeper asked impatiently, “What do you want this time?" "Sir, um... you paid me two bills, instead of one,” Susan murmured, trembling in every limb.

A few seconds later, realizing what had happened, he stretched out his hand and tapped Susan on the shoulder gently, his face splitting into a wide smile,“Keepit! The other bill is foryou as the present of your honesty."”“No, sir, thank you,” Susan blurted out. “I do not want to be paid for doing right.” Desperate to tell her mother what she had done, Susan waved goodbye to the hotelkeeper and returned to her humble home with a lightened heart.
