MMA/STICK WELDING

SMAW is a welding process that uses a flux covered metal electrode to carry an electrical current. The current forms an arc that jumps a gap from the end of the electrode to the work. The electric arc creates enough heat to melt both the electrode and the base material. Molten metal from the electrode travels across the arc to the molten pool of base metal where they mix together. As the arc moves away, the mixture of molten metals solidifies and becomes one piece. The molten pool of metal is surrounded and protected by a fume cloud and a covering of slag produced as the coating of the electrode burns or vaporizes. Due to the appearance of the electrodes, SMAW is commonly known as ‘STICK' welding also names Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding .
SMAW is one of the oldest and most popular methods of joining metal. SMAW is used primarily because of its low cost, flexibility, portability. SMAW is very flexible in terms of the material
thicknesses that can be welded and it's quite versatile because it can weld many different types of metals, including cast iron, steel, nickel and aluminum.

STICK WELDING TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

SELECTION OF CORRECT ELECTRODE

As a general rule, the selection of an electrode is straight forward, in that it is only a matter of selecting an electrodeof similar composition to the parent metal.

SELECTION OF THE CORRECT SIZE OF THE ELECTRODE FOR THE JOB

The size of the electrode generally depends on the thickness of the section being welded, and the thicker the section the larger the electrode required. In the case of light sheet, the electrode size used is generally slightly larger than the work being welded. This means that, if 2.0mm sheet is being welded, 2.5mm diameter electrode is the recommended size.

TIG welding

TIG or STICK welding

Increases the output current during start of a weld. Provides excellent arc ignition without electrode sticking.

FARCE

Increases the outputcurrent during welding when the arc is too short and supports to weld excellent arc performance.

SNCK

Allows you to withdraw your electrode without damaging in case of sticking metal, serves as safety device.

Arc striking without contact. The electrode tip does not wear out. It offers easy start all welding positions.

TIG WELDING - TIG( GTAW) welding

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) also known as tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is process that produces an electric arc maintained between a non consumable tungsten electrode and the part to be welded. The heat affected zone, the molten metal, and the tungsten electrode are all shielded from atmospheric contamination by a blanket of inert gas fed through the TIG torch.

TIG welding can be an excessively precise process providing you with very clean welds, without any spatter and with minimal smoke. This makes it become attractive for the highly cosmetic applications like sculpture, automotive, experimental aircraft, in addition to a number of home-hobbyist tasks. It's popular in applications involving thin-gauge parts of metal, lighter metals like aluminum, copper alloys, and chrome moly tubing. These materials need precise heat control to evade warping or burn off through the bottom of the metal. TIG welding machines efficiently operate at the lower amperages required to supply this control.

TIG WELDING SPECIFICATIONS

Notes:

- Aluminum 6061 is an extremely versatile heat treatable aluminum alloy due to its content of silicon and magnesium.
6061 has a wide range of mechanical and corrosion resistance properties.

\- Aluminum Alloy 5356 contains 5% magnesium. Alloy 5356 is one of the most widely used welding alloys and is commonly referred to as a general purpose type filler alloy. Alloy 5356 is typically chosen for its excellent corrosion resistance and high shear strength.

GTAW Gasses:

100% Argon (most common, coolest)

75% Argon/25% Helium

75% Helium/25% Argon (hottest gas, higher % of helium can result in arc starting issues)

100% Helium (hard to start arc, very hot.)

Always adjust gas flow s to accommodate best shielding results.

GTA weIding :

The tungsten welding operates at high temperatures, ideal metals are those that have a low melting point. This includes: Aluminum: use on AC output and high frequency setting. Keep the tungsten from touching the piece being welded to avoid contamination. Conducts heat, clean aluminum with a wire brush (even if it looks clean) to remove aluminum oxide. Use high heat settings to increase welding speed. Not all aluminum alloys can be welded. An alternative to TIG welding aluminum with a simpler process is to use HTS-2000 aluminum brazing.

Magnesium: similar properties to aluminum

Stainless steel: requires the use of a filler rod with high chrome component. Use gas lenses for better gas coverage of weld.

Mild steel: use rods with deoxidizers. Clean the steel before welding.

Notes:

HTS-2000 is a "Second Generation" fluxless low-heat brazing rod for nonferrous metals. HTS-2000 will successfully join all aluminium alloys, including those that are not favorably joined by high-temperature brazing.

The MIG (Metal Inert Gas) or MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding also called Gas- shielded Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is arc maintained between continuous solid wire electrode and the work piece. The arc and weld pool are shielded by a stream of inert or active gas. The process is suitable for most materials and filler wires are available for a wide range of metals.

MIG/MAG welding is inherently more productive than MMA, where productivity losses occur each time a welder stops to replace a consumed electrode. Material losses also result from MMA welding when the stub of each electrode is thrown away. For every kilogram of coated stick electrode purchased about 65% became part of weld the rest being discarded. The use of solid wire and flux cored wire has increased the efficiency to 80-95%. Mig/ Mag welding is a versatile process which can deposit metal at a very high rate and in all positions. The process is widely used on light to medium gauge steel fabrications and aluminum alloy structures particularly where high rate manual operator production is required. The introduction of flux cored wires is finding increased application is heavy steel structures. Owing to its special features such as high deposition rates, deep penetration, great economic efficiency, ease of handling, complete mechanisability etc., the MIG/MAG process has tremendous advantages over other welding processes.

Stainless Steel

Welding stainless steel may not be as difficult as welding aluminum, but the metal does have specific properties that make it different than welding on common steels. Use a triple-mix gas (Helium/Argon/CO2) or spray shielding gas for stainless steels.

AIR PLASMA CUTTING

Plasma cutting is used in cutting and gouging applications, and requires compressed air and electricity to create plasma gas. Plasma is an effective means of cutting thin and thick materials alike. Virtually any metal can be plasma cut including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper and other conductive metals may be cut as well. Hand-held torches can usually cut up to 51mm (2 inches) thick steel plate, and stronger computer-controlled torches can cut steel up to 150 mm (6 inches) thick. Since plasma cutters produce a very hot and very localized "cone" to cut with, they are extremely useful for cutting sheet metal in curved or angled shapes.
