{I^{\prime}{m\ 52}} , and as surprising as it may seem, I'm a gymnast. In a sport for young girls, I have found an unlikely path to joy. When I enter the gym, no matter how much stress I might be feeling, my mind clears and I forget my life. I think of nothing but what I am doing.
When I was 9, I went every Saturday to a gymnastic academy. The coach had gray hair and wore ballet shoes and had boundless enthusiasm. He would say, “"You are going to be a gymnast. " And I believed him. I vividly remember the first time I did a roundoff back handspring by myself, the weightlessness of it. Ilived for Saturday mornings. I only ever did gymnastics recreationally—I didn't even know real gyms existed—but I always loved it.
That long dormant(垫伏的)love came roaring back in my forties. It happened in an instant, at parents day for my daughter's beginning gymnastics class. The bars were just sitting there, and I had this overwhelming urge to grab hold and swing. But I couldn't make it through the warm-up(热身运动) at the first adult class I went. I felt bad during conditioning. I was the oldest person there. But that spark of memory glowed with poibility. I went back to class again, and again. It was hard and it was humbling. But soon I was doing back handsprings like I used to.
There is nothing like the thrill of getting a new skill, that combination of speed, mechanics, timing, muscles, guts. There is an ineffable(不可言喻的) element, too, something like faith. By the time we reach middle age, most of us have had to deal with our fair share of unwelcome surprises, like ilness, family crisis or the death of a beloved parent. But gymnastics has brought the most delightful surprises—I keep getting better, surpassing what Ithought were limits, amazing myself by what I can do. Ata time in life when many things fee like they are sliding down the slope towards old, gymnastics is a gift of fluency and competence in motion. I'm in the best shape of my life. I'm a better gymnast now than I was at 16.

To figure out if we can die of boredom, we first have to understand what boredom is. For help, I called James Danckert, a psychologist who studies boredom at the University of Waterloo in Canada. “A lot of people think about being bored as being lazy. And it's absolutely not that,”" he says. “Bored people want to be engaged with their world, eager to do something satisfying and exciting. But any attempt to do so is failing."
That means boredom is usually very upsetting. And it can have physical consequences. In one of his experiments, Danckert made people extremely bored by showing them a video of two people hanging clothes to dry. He found that when people got bored, their hearts beat faster and their levels of a hormone called cortisol(皮质醇) went up, compared to when they watched another video that made them sad. These physical changes were signs that boredom was stresing them out. “It's not like having a full-on panic attack,” Danckert says. But it's certainly enough to make boredom unpleasant.
Let's come back to if boredom can kill you. Back in the 1980s, scientists asked people who worked for the British government a whole bunch of questions, including how bored they felt in their daily lives. The study tracked the participants over time. When any one of them died, the survey recorded the cause of death. In 2010, two researchers matched up these causes of death with the participants’ level of boredom. It turned out that people who said they were more bored were also more likely to have died of heart disease. “We know that prolonged exposure to stress is bad for your health," Danckert says. A single boring day can't kill you. But if you're always bored, the stress could add up to something dangerous.
"Oh no," you might be thinking. “School is boring; my friends are boring; everything is boring! What's going to happen to me?" Don't worry. Danckert says: “As you get older, you get less bored,”" mainly because you gain more independence and have to get busy to achieve your long-term goals. And trust me: that's anything but boring.

Rene Campbell has devoted most of her life to shaping her figure into one completely against what society thinks a woman should look like.
"I was always very insecure about my body image, as everyone seemed to know for sure that women needed to look a certain way,”" she says when reflecting on her motivation to transform herself. 1 For quite some time, she struggled with eating disorders because she was trying to keep her weight really low and appear skinny, like the women on magazine covers. 2 It was then that she became attracted by the way these seemingly confident women held themselves.
However, building her dream body—gaining over 85 pounds, going from a size 8 to 14——has had its challenges, too. “ 3 When I tell them that I am a female bodybuilder, the first reaction is, ‘Muscles for women are just not atractive,'" Campbell says. Though she loves the way she now looks, she is sometimes treated with cruelty.
4 Even though there is a huge market encouraging women to build muscles and tighten their figures, the ideal still stands for smaller waists, and thin legs, the so-called perfect figure. For women to build up strong muscles, it takes a strong heart.
"I gradually learn to ignore others′ voices and become committed to the training. It is a very big shift for me, and it has won me plenty of awards. 5 My bodybuilding journey makes me realize that I need to do things for myself," Campbell says.
A.She was constantly feeling under pressure.
B. Women have to pay a huge price to build a slim figure.
C. It does bring a sense of confidence and mental strength.
D. The body of super-muscular women is considered unwelcome.
E. Luckily, Campbell was chosen to shoot for one of the magazines.
F. People don't understand why women would want to be muscular.
G. Purely by chance, Campbell attended a women's bodybuilding show.

The red-crowned crane(丹顶鹤)is national first-class protected wildlife. However, due to environmental and ecological damage, the number of red-crowned cranes had been dangerously declining when Zhao Shiwei joined the Zhaoquan River Management Station in 1992.Artificial breeding(繁殖)of redcrowned cranes became an important part of Zhao's work.
3 red-crowned crane birds hatched at the station through his artificial programme in 1996. But despite testing success, Zhao and his team encountered hardships the following year. In 1997, not a single redcrowned crane bird hatched. And in 1998, only one red-crowned crane chick hatched through artificial breeding, but it died soon after.
In 199, the station rescued 7 injured red-crowned cranes from the wild, which brought a crucial ray of hope for the programme. That drove Zhao and his colleagues to check temperature control devices, go through a huge amount of data, and seek advice from experts, hoping to achieve a breakthrough in artificial breeding. They tried every possible method, even consulting technicians from nearby chicken farms. Finally, the artificial breeding programme improved a lot. Later, a record of 85 red-crowned crane birds hatched at the station through a combination of artificial and natural breeding methods. Over the past 30 years, Zhao has always been personally involved in the hatching process. “This part is the most crucial; there cannot be the slightest error,” he said.
Later, Zhao realized that with the number of artificially bred red-crowned cranes increasing, the bond between the cranes and humans was growing stronger. “But they are the spirits of nature and hence should return to nature,” Zhao said. Therefore, Zhao provided outdoor training to artificially bred red-crowned cranes in the reserve in order to increase the number of wild red-crowned cranes. Up to now, Zhao and his team have bred and released more than 200 red-crowned cranes after ensuring they will be able to survive in nature.

Imagine a child asking a chatbot or voice assistant if Santa Claus is real. How should the AI respond, given that some families would prefer a lie over the truth? This is a dilemma in the litte-studied area of robot deception(欺骗).
Two Georgia Tech researchers, Kantwon Rogers and Reiden Webber, designed a driving simulation(模 拟) experiment to investigate how intentional robot deception affects trust between humans and Al, and whether different types of apologies can help repair that trust.
In the simulation, participants were instructed to drive a “robot-assisted car” to the hospital to save a friend's life, while the AIassistant was falsely warned of police ahead, advising participants to stay under the speed limit. Upon reaching the hospital, participants were informed that there were no police, and they received one of five different text-based responses from the robot—three admitting the lie, two offering a simple apology without admission. The study aimed to determine which type of apology was most effective in repairing trust after a robot's lie.
The results of the experiment were surprising. 45% of the participants did not speed, because they believed the robot knew more about the situation than they did, revealing an overly trusting attitude toward Al. The results also indicated that while none of the apology types fully recovered trust, the apology with no admission of lying was statistically more effective in repairing trust than other responses.
The researchers' final goal is to create a robot system that can learn when and how to lie or apologize during human-AI interactions. But they acknowledge that this is a complex issue. “We still know very little about AI deception, but we do know that lying is not always bad, and telling the truth isn't always good," Rogers said. “So how can we make laws that support new ideas without harming them, while also keeping people safe?"
( )8. What is the aim of the experiment?
A. To assess AI's intentional responses.
B. To examine AI's learning capabilities.
C. To evaluate AI's assistance in driving.
D. To study AI deception's impact on trust.
)9. Which response from AI is the most effective in repairing trust in the experiment?
A. “I am sorry. "
B.“I lied to you.”
C. “You're at your destination. "
D. “Forgive me for my fault. "
( )10. What might Rogers advise AI lawmakers to do?
A. Balance innovation and users’ safety.
B. Prioritize protection of users’ privacy.
C. Promote moral behaviour in AI systems.
D. Enforce clearer and stricter regulations.
( )11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Human-AI Confidence Crisis B. A Dilemma in Human Honesty C.Is a Robot System Promising? D. AI Deception: Bad or Not?

Are you an open book, your face broadcasting every pasing emotion, or more of a poker face, not showing what you are feeling? Scientists at Nottingham Trent University say that wearing your heart on your face could actually give you a significant social advantage.
The study, led by Eithne Kavanagh, a research fellow at NTU's School of Social Sciences, involving over 1, 300 participants, noticed striking variations in how much people moved their faces during conversations. Importantly, this expressiveness emerged as a stable individual quality. People displayed similar levels of facial expressiveness across different contexts, with diferent social partners, and even over time periods up to four months.
The researchers say that facial expressiveness is linked to personality, with more agreeable individuals displaying more lively faces. Facial expressiveness can also translate into concrete social benefits. In a negotiation task, more expressive individuals are more likely to secure a larger slice of a reward. The researchers suggest that for agreeable folks, dynamic facial expressions may serve as a tool forbuilding good relationships and smoothing over conficts. Across the board, the results point to facial expressiveness serving as an “affiliative(亲和) function", or a social glue that develops liking and smoother interactions.
Expressiveness is also linked to being seen as more “readable", suggesting that a lively face makes one's intentions and mental states easier forothers todecipher. Beyond frequency of facial movements, people who employ facial expressions more strategically to suit social goals, such as looking friendly in a greeting, are also more well-liked.
The findings challenge the “poker face” common belief that a still and unemotional appearance is always most advantageous. Instead, they suggest that for most people, allowing one's face to mirror inner states and intentions can invite warmer reactions. As the researchers conclude, “Being facially expressive is socially advantageous.” So, the next time you catch yourself making lines on your forehead, or flashing a smile, know that your face just might be working overtime on your behalf.
C )12. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning the study?
A. Its impact.
B. Its findings.
C. Its limitations.
D. Its significance.
( )13. What may facial expressiveness serve as in negotiation settings?
A. A way to frighten competitors.
B. A method to hide personalities.
C. A tool to show personal quality.
D. A strategy to settle disagreement.
( )14. What does the underlined word “decipher” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Copy.
B. Overlook.
C. Remember.
D. Interpret.
( )15. What may the author advise based on the findings of the study?
A. Always wearing a still face.
B. Learning to be an open book.
C. Speaking out inner emotions.
D. Forcing a smile through tears.

Children experience the joy and wonder of new experiences almost daily. However, for many adults, these emotions get lost in the day-to-day repetition of everyday life and routine. 16
Trying new things is good for our brain. It helps us think more creatively and enhances confidence. It also helps us destress in that a new experience can help break harmful or negative routines.17We will consider things from new and different perspectives.
It is obvious that trying new things is good for our mental health. _18 Participating in new physical activities can improve our physical fitness, boost our energy levels, and enhance our overall health. For example, trying a new sport or exercise routine can increase our flexibility and strength.

Building new relationships can provide us with a sense of belonging.
Still, i can be scary to break routine and try something totally different. 20Start small by breaking a goal into smaller steps. And be very specific about the goal. For example, instead of aiming to work on arm strength, make a goal of doing twenty arm curls(弯曲)a day. In addition,be realistic and make sure the goal is practicable in terms of finances and free time.
While it is easy to get caught up in the daily tiring activities of life, always keep in mind that doing something new can be the best thing we can do for ourselves. So we'd better make the wise choice.

My love for dance began when I was very young and I would dream to be a star dancer from time to time. With the drama festival approaching, the school's drama club had released a notice for the dancer audition(试镜) for The Trwelve Dancing Princesses. And of course I was the first one to sign up.
As Ileft the stage after my audition at school, I could feel it. The power. The future. I knew that someday when dancers' magazines wrote about me, they would say this moment was when my rise to a star began.
My ballet slippers hurt my feet, but Ifigured that was helpful. In The Twelve Dancing Princesses, the princesses danced all night so they probably had foot pain, too. My performance was more genuine because of my pain. I needed to show my devotion even when I wasn't on stage, so Iapproached Mr Elison, the drama club advisor. He told me that casting(角色分配) would be posted tomorrow.“Thank you, sir," I said, using the almost British pronunciation of Hollywood stars in the 1940s. I was so sure that Mr Ellison would cast me as a princess.
The next morning, I went to read the cast list. The twelve princesses were first, by number. I scanned from One to Twelve, but none by me. At the bottom of the cast list, my name finally appeared. My role was a really small one, an old woman who helped a soldier, not one of the princesses! I was desperately disappointed. Mr Ellison must have made a mistake! No one else in the school had my skills or preparation! I found him in his classroom, but he insisted there was no mistake and emphasized that every role in a play was important. Unable to accept the fact, Iburst into tears. Mr Ellison managed to calm me down and encouraged me to have a try in the rehearsal(排练).
Paragraph 1 :
The next day, I dragged myself to the rehearsal.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, the great day arrived and "the old woman”" couldn't wait to get on stage.
