Jessica Damiano moved into a new home in the spring of 2005. At the time, she was delighted to see a flowering plant growing in the garden. She did not know the name of the beautiful plant. But that did not matter to her. She loved it!
Two years later, Damiano graduated from Cornell University's master gardener program. She worked as a gardening writer for a local newspaper. That was when she found out the truth. She discovered that her favorite plant was called purple loosestrife and that it was considered“invasive(人侵的)”inher home state of NewYork. However, she told herself that the plant was not spreading on the property and that it was not out of control.
Then she learned more. Some plants known to be invasive are what Damiano calls “wolves in sheep's clothing". This means they may seem harmless and well-contained in the garden but become harmful in other places.
Birds eat the seeds of invasive plants and spread them to other places. Those seeds grow into new plants that outgrow native plants. This is because invasive plants often are not eaten by local wildlife, which would otherwise keep them under control. If not controlled, invasive plants grow larger and push out native plants that provide food and shelter for birds, insects, and small animals. This harms the local environment.
Many state environmental agencies ban the sale and use of plants found to be harmful to human or ecological health. But some invasive plants are not officially considered invasive. Others may be listed as invasive in one area but not another. And some invasive plants continue to be sold in stores.
So, what is a gardener to do? Damiano says to avoid any plants sold as “vigorous”“fast-spreading” “quick-climbing” or a “rapid selfsower".She warns that these are all sellers’code words(暗号)for invasive plants. Next, learn about your local area: Which plants are invasive? And which plants are native? Ask government agencies, universities and colleges, and environmental groups. You can also do your own research at libraries or online.
In the end,Damiano replaced that plant with the native and equally beautiful blazing star plant. This plant has been growing happily without problems in her garden for the past 15 years.
24. How did Damiano react when she first learned purple loosestrife was “invasive”?
A. She felt regretful for loving it.
B. She reported it to the government.
C. She didn't take the fact seriously.
D. She got rid of the plant immediately.
25. Why can invasive plants grow better than native plants?
A. They need less water.
B. They have fewer natural enemies.
C. They adapt to the environment quicker.
D. They have longer roots and bigger leaves.
26. What does the author mainly intend to express in paragraph 5?
A. Policies about invasive plants vary in different areas.
B. Some invasive plants are not harmful.
C. Invasive plants are rarely seen in stores.
D. The government's attitude to invasive plants is improper.
27. Which is a method the gardener can use to avoid planting invasive plants?
A. Giving up any plants that sell well in the local area. 3. Choosing plants that can provide food for wild animals. C. Refusing to say the code words of sellers for invasive plants. D. Referring to books for information on which plants are invasive

You've probably heard scientists say “the best explanation is the simplest one".But is it? Why should we assume the simplest explanation is closest to the truth? This idea, known as Occam's razor (奥卡姆剃刀),is a form of minimalism:we should not introduce entities(实体) unless we have evidence that they exist. In other words: don't make stuff up.
In 1687,Isaac Newton expanded on this idea,"We are to admit no more causes of natural things than such as are both true and sufficient to explain their appearances,” He continued. “To this purpose, nature does nothing in vain, for nature is pleased with simplicity.” But this claim is strange. Who is to say what “pleases nature"? And doesn't this guidance assume we know what we are trying to figure out?
Consider the work of Vera C.Rubin, who found evidence for the existence of dark matter. While studying the movement of galaxies (星系),Rubin discovered that the speed at which stars rotated around the center of their galaxies made sense only if these galaxies contained an additional mass weighing about 10 times more than the visible stars. The claim of a new form of “dark" matter—unseeable and present in far greater quantities than the visible matter of the universe—was not a simple explanation, but it turned out to be the best explanation.
Physics is filled with explanations that are unexpected. Newton explained light as being made of particles, whereas other scientists explained it as a wave. Quantum mechanics, however, tells us that light is both a wave and a particle. Newton's account was simpler, but modern physics tells us that the more complex model is closer to the truth.
Occam's razor is not a theory. It's an idea held independently of factual evidence. There are new things under the sun,and rare events may be rare because they involve a complex combination of events. Put this way, we can see Occam's razor as a failure of imagination. Our explanations should match the world as best as we can. Science is about letting the chips fall, and sometimes this means accepting that the truth is not simple, even if it would make ourlives easier if it were.
28. What does the underlined word “minimalism" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Ignoring existing facts.
B. Creating physical entities.
C. Making use of abstract concepts.
D. Avoiding unnecessary complexity.
29. What is the author's attitude toward Newton's idea?
A. Critical. B. Unclear.
C. Conservative. D. Approving.
30. Why does the author mention Rubin's discovery?
A. To throw doubt on Occam's Razor.
B. To reveal the beauty of galaxies.
C. To explain the speed of star rotation.
D. To emphasize the value of her contribution.
31. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Occam's razor can make our lives easier.
B.A simpler explanation doesn't always work.
C. Truth will always be truth regardless of disbelief.
D. Imagination will sometimes turn out to be complex.

Having a personal trainer is one of the best ways to stay on track with your workouts, push your limits and try new things. But it often costs more than 100$ a class, and getting to and from the gym can take up a lot of time.
Over the past ten years, fitness apps have been trying to copy the personal training experience exactly, and in recent years many have included artificial intelligence (AI) to create workouts. A growing number of products offer personalized workouts that match your abilities, goals and equipment you have, which usually cost around 100$ a year.
However, some experts warn that while AI fitness apps are useful for many exercisers, they're not the right fit for everyone.
AI fitness apps create personalized training programs using information from personal users and the experiences of other users.
In the future, these apps could collect even more information to give ever more personalized feedback(反馈),said futurist David Brin. But,he added, more information doesn't always lead to better advice. "What you need to consider is whether the advice will actually be good for you,in the long run," he said.
Furthermore, computers can learn a lot about different workout routines, but they can't yet create the social interactions that make the training successful, said Nikola Banovic, professor of computer science and engineering at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the University of Michigan.
The AI fitness apps we have now can't offer encouragement or provide comfort on a bad day.“As humans,we need more than just the workouts that will get us to our goals,” Dr Banovic said.“We need to be encouraged—that's something only a real trainer can do right now. It will be some time before AI training does this well."
32. What is the main advantage of AI fitness apps over personal trainers?
A. Requiring less exercise equipment.
B. Offering coaching services at a lower price.
C. Creating more personalized training plans.
D. Providing a better personal training experience.
33. What may David Brin agree with?
A.Users should work harder to protect their personalinformation.
B. AI fitness apps should find more tools for collecting information.
C. Users should be careful with the advice offered by AI fitness apps.
D. AI fitness apps should be improved to meet the needs of every user.
34. What should future AI fitness apps focus on?
A. Setting achievable goals.
B. Adding live chat services.
C. Learning new workout routines.
D. Developing useful interactions.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. How Do Experts Feel About an AI Trainer? B. Can AI Fitness Apps Take the Place of the Gyms? C. Would an AI Trainer Be Better than a Real Trainer? D. How Do AI Fitness Apps Change the Way You Exercise?

Fitting the context perfectly is the story of Ian William.

However,in 1996,Ian was diagnosed with a tumor in the left part of his brain, which affected his hearing from the right side and damaged his balance nerve. He underwent two surgeries in 1997 with a smile and a hope to be cured. Although the surgeries were successful,Ian caught meningitis(脑膜炎)while recovering from it.Apart from being hopeful and optimistic, there was no other way Ian could cope with the situation.
Just as things had begun to normalize,in 2006,Ian's body was affected by a major stroke. This stroke numbed the left side of his body. His life-long dream of participating in a golf tournament could not be fulfilled anymore.

Landscape architect Kotchakorn Voraakhom has designed a new green roof on the Rangsit Campus of Thammasat University, about 25 miles north of central Bangkok, Thailand. Her imaginative work challenges the common thinking that urbanization has a negative impact on the planet, whether flooding, excess(过度的)energy use, disrupted (扰乱)biodiversity or theheat islandeffect.
步步高周周测英语选择性必修第二册(人教版)
The 236, 806-square-foot structure, which opened in December 2019,includes a flood water management system and Asia's largest rooftop organic farm. It combines modern landscape architecture with traditional agricultural knowledge, creating a green and friendly environment.
The green roof, containing an H-shaped landscape, looks like a futuristic hill with a brick building beneath it. The hill features a complex pattern of zigzagging terraces(之字形梯田)of plantedbeds, leading all the way down to the bottom. When rainwater hits the roof,it flows down the zigzags while being absorbed by the soil in the beds. The excess water is directed into four storage ponds— with a capacity of up to 3 million gallons. The process slows down the flow speed of rainwater runoff compared to a normal concrete rooftop. This keeps the area from flooding during heavy rains.
The roof's terraces are filled with organically grown crops, including a drought-tolerant variety of rice, many local vegetables and herbs. The farm can supply the canteens on campus with a large amount of rice, herbs and vegetables a year. The food waste is composted(把...制成堆肥)tofertilize the farm, andwaterfrom the storage ponds is used to water plants, creating an entirely localized and circular system.
The farm serves as an outdoor classroom and a source of local jobs, too. Farmers offer workshops on sustainable agriculture and nutrition as part of the university's sustainability curriculum. “Students and community members are invited to participate in seasonal seeding, harvesting, and so on,” says Voraakhom.“The urban farm is training a new generation of organic farmers with real-world skills. It also promotes a sense of community.”
28. What can we say about Voraakhom's work?
A. It's creative. B. It's short-lived.
C. It's demanding. D. It's time-consuming.
29. Why is the rooftop designed to be zigzag?
A. To store more water.
B. To plant diverse vegetables.
C. To slow the speed of water flow.
D. To make it look more attractive than other buildings.
30. What can be inferred about the farm from paragraph 4?
A. It uses food as fertilizer.
B. It benefits the environment.
C.It improves students'lifestyle.
D. It produces vegetables and fruit.
31. What does the author want to show by mentioning the outdoor classroom?
A. Students can learn hands-on knowledge on the farm.
B. Farmers working on the farm can become professors.
C. The farm prevents government from offering people jobs.
D. The farm harms the relationship between university and community.

In recent years, scientists have found a surprising phenomenon:In many cultures around the world, parents don't struggle to raise helpful, kind kids. From ages 2 to 18,kids want to help their families. They wake up in the morning, voluntarily do the dishes, hop off their bikes to help their dad carry groceries into the house and when somebody hands them a cake, they share it with a younger sister or brother before taking a bite themselves. You can find these charitable kids among farmers, hunters and fishermen.
During the past four years,I've been interested in learning what these parents are doing to nurture such helpfulness in their kids. While doing the research,I traveled to three of the world's most honored cultures—the Maya,Inuit and Hadzabe, and describe what I found in my new book—Hunt,Gather,Parent.
Supported by psychologists,my research result shows that parents raising helpful children welcome young children and babies into family chores and work—even if the child will make a bit of a mess or slow down the work, just opposite to many of American parents. What they say is that,"I know they are not going to do a good job,but to create more work for me.” In fact, turning down help from kids can have a bad influence, destroying their desire to help and possibly stop their desire to take care of their families.
"Given request at an early age,the children would start to act on what's needed, and then the less likely parents need to be telling them what to do later," Lew-Levy, a psychologist in Harvard University, says.“You can pull back on the teaching, and kids just do it on their own. " But how does a parent let a young baby help with a task they can't actually do yet—especially a task that may be too dangerous for them? You can find specific instructions in the following chapter.
32. What does the underlined word “charitable” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Selfish. B. Dependent. C. Helpful. D. Curious.
33. Which of the following best describes the parents raising helpful children?
A. Patient and serious.
B. Open-minded and thoughtful.
C. Influential and risky.
D. Hardworking and adventurous.
34. What do Lew-Levy's words mean?
A. Children just act on what their parents tell them to do.
B. Parents should allow kids to do whatever they want.
C. Parents are unlikely to tell children what to do at an early age.
D. Children are more voluntary when given requests at a young age.
35.Which is the best title for the text?
A.How Can We Raise Caring Kids? B. How to Be Kind Parents? C. The Helpful Children in Some Cultures D. The Growing Experiences of Helpful Children

Emily is a sixth-grade student in a small American town. She is a curious and adventurous girl who always dreams of exploring new places.Last summer, her dream came true when she got selected for a student exchange program to visit China.
Emily was super excited, but she knew that going to a different country with a brand new culture might not be easy. When she arrived in China, she had an open heart and lots of hope, but the cultural differences, the language barrier, and the unfamiliar surroundings made her feel a bit overwhelmed.
On her first day at a Chinese school, she felt like she was in a completely different world. The students spoke a language she couldn't understand, and the way things worked in the classroom was very different from back home. During lunchtime, poor Emily sat all by herself in a corner of the cafeteria, feeling lost and lonely. Just then,a friendly Chinese girl came up to her with a warm smile and said, "Hello,my name is Li Shanshan. I noticed you're new here. Would you like to be our friend?"
Emily was so relieved and thankful for the friendly offer.“Thank you,” she replied with a big smile.“I'm Emily, and I'm really happy to meet you.”
Shanshan introduced Emily to her group of friends, and they all welcomed her with open arms. They helped Emily with her Chinese language, taught her about Chinese customs, and shared their favorite Chinese foods. Slowly but surely, Emily started to feel more comfortable and understand the Chinese culture better.
One day,as the English teacher was planning her class schedule, she came up with an idea. She decided to assign each student in the class to do a presentation about their hometowns the next week. She believed this could be a great way for the students to learn about different cultures and improve their public speaking skills.

The day finally came and it was Emily's turn tomake the presentation.
