Peking Man Site
On December 2nd,1929,a complete skull of Peking Man was discovered by Pei Wenzhong, an archaeologist of China, on Dragon Bone Hill northwest of Zhoukoudian village, in the southwest suburbs of Beijing.
Later, archaeologists unearthed 40 more individually fossilised skeletons of Peking Man, male, female, old and young, all at the same site. Zhoukoudian, therefore, became the most common site for human remains with the most rich fossils' in the world from the same period. The discovery pushed the history of Beijing's civilisation back to some 600,000 years. These fossilised remains prove that Peking Man was primitive man in an evolutionary² process from ancient ape to modern man,and is the ancestor of the Chinese nation.
About 600, 000 years ago, living on the plain here were wild animals. For safety against these animals and shelter,Peking Man chose the limestone caves. At that time, Peking Man was able to make fire and tools, began production, and had his language. The discovery ofPekingManSiteatZhoukoudian is regarded as the most valuable contribution in the 20th century. It advanced’ human history for tens of thousands years earlier, which provides the most precious\* first-hand evidence for the study of human origin and evolution as well as for reproducing the life of the earliest man.
Besides Peking Man Site, around Zhoukoudian about 20other sites with fossils are also discovered. Together they form a natural museum of the history of human beings and other living things.
Zhoukoudian is known worldwide as the home of Peking Man.In 1953,Zhoukoudian Museum was open to the public, and the site was brought under the state protection as a key historic site. In 1987,Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian was listed on the World Heritage List as a cultural heritage of the world.

这是一个由notonly ...but also... 当not only...but also ...
notonly...but(also)..
notonly...but(also)...
notonly..but(also)...

Here comes the girl who wants to see you.(做主语)
Danny is a man who we should learn from.(做宾语)
2.whom
The girl (whom) the teacher often praises is Rose.(做宾语)
Any student whose family can't afford him to go to school can get help from the government.(whose
He lives in a room whose window faces north.(whose
China is a country which has a long history.
The radio (which) he bought yesterday doesn't work.(做宾语)
This is the novel that interests me.(指 物,做主语)
The magazine (that) I bought yesterday is lost.(指物,做宾语)
(2)when可以换成“介词 + which"。
I still remember the time when (= in which) I was in college.
I haveforgotten the exact date when( \l= on which) this country became independent.
(2)where可以换成“介词 + which"
We have reached a point where a change is needed.
He gets into a situation where it is hard to decide what is right or wrong.
This is the hotel where( = in which) they stayed.
3.why
This is the reason why ( \c= for which) he left in a hurry.
三、介词+关系代词which/whom/whose
1. China is the country in which the compass was first invented.
2. The professor to whom I spoke is a learned man.
to whom 中的 to是动介搭配 speak to,提前后只能用whom,介词提前不能与who, that连用。
3. She is the very person with whose help I found my lost bike.
“介词 + whose + 名词”在定语从句中做状语。
注意:在“介词 ^+ 关系代词"引导的定语从句中,介词的选择依据习惯搭配而定;并且在一些固定搭配中,如动词短语,有时动词和介词不可分割,因此不能把介词置于关系代词之前。
This is the pen which/that I'm looking for.

Wherever we go, we are surrounded by history. Across the globe, cultural heritage is passed down through the generations. It is in the buildings and structures around us. It is in the arts and artifacts (手工艺品) we treasure. It lives in the languages we speak and the stories we tell. But today,it is under attack as never before. Not only are the damages of time threatening our cultural heritage, but conflicts, climate change, globalisation and tourism are all exacting a heavy price. Technology is now the most essential weapon in the battle. Here's how technology is preserving our cultural heritage.
As you can imagine, creating the replicas via crowdsourced 2D images is extremely time-consuming. Increasingly, artificial intelligence(AI)algorithms(算法)are being used to do all the required sourcing, allowing millions of images to be stored in a matter of hours. AI will also make restoration and preservation of existing cultural heritage far easier and vastly superior to previous methods.

Virtual reality(VR) technology will play a leading role in preserving our cultural heritage in the coming years. Many of the most important sites and architecture are extremely fragile. As more cultural heritage sites and objects are digitally mapped and recorded, VR technology will increasingly become the way that people experience them. We'll all eventually be able to walk through places, look at and even touch artifacts and works of art without ever seeing them with our own eyes.
Finally, our cultural heritage will be preserved via technology. Efforts in research, innovation, data sharing and project work will help promote and preserve the cultural heritage of countries all across the world.

Petra may be the treasure of an ancient world, hidden behind a tall mountain. Its beautiful scenery makes it one of the greatest ancient sites still standing today. Common sense says"perhaps there's nothing on the planet that looks like it". Without doubt, there's nothing in the world that resembles it. The rock-carved rose-red town of Petra is filled with a mysterious charm that had been “designed to strike wonder into all who entered it".
Petra is the legacy from the Nabataeans, a hard-working group of Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2,000 years ago.Admired then because of their culture, architecture and complex dams and water channels, Petra has become a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) world heritage site and is listed in the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Suddenly the gorge opens right into a natural square covered with Petra's most well-known monuments, which glows in the bright sun. The ancient city shows the visitors its beautiful look. The town is large and the quality of the architecture is surprising. It leads someone to think about the creativity from the Nabataeans who made Petra their capital.
Petra was the top architectural site for more than 400 years until it was occupied by the Romans in 106 CE. It was seen first when discovered in 1812 after being lost through the 16th century for nearly 300 years! Petra has 800 monuments, including buildings, tombs, baths, halls, temples, and streets, which were mostly carved in the pretty sandstone. Petra sights are in their finest in the early morning and the late afternoon. Once the sun warms the colourful stones, you will see the majesty of Petra.

One week after I started working in Beijing,I decided to visit a place of interest called the Summer Palace. Before setting off,I researched into it on the Internet. The Summer Palace is composed mostly of a lake, but it's surrounded by beautiful greenery and a walkway that circles the lake. It is recommended that you give the Summer Palace about three hours. If you try to walk around it,it could take five or six hours. With that knowledge of it,I set off.
The highlight of the tour had to be the view from the Tower of Buddhist Incense. It sits on top of a large hill overlooking the lake and that is worth the climb. And in the Summer Palace, unlike most of the other places, photography wasn't allowed in most of the buildings. “No Photos” signs could be seen beside most of the statues of Buddha and the other artifacts(手工艺品).
Another highlight was seeing the stage created for the Dowager Empress where she watched the opera and other theatre items. There are box seats that surround the stage and it was the largest stage created in Imperial China. You could almost imagine royalty reviewing the actors from the boxes and the stage.
I do recommend taking a boat ride if you go,which takes you from one side of the lake to the other side where you can see another set of buildings. And it is fun. You can also rent an electric or paddle boat if you want. But since it was just me,I went on one of the biggest boats with other people.
I spent another four hours wandering around the Summer Palace. But I didn't see all of it because it was getting dark. I am looking forward to visiting it again.

Among the seven wonders of the ancientarchitectural(建筑方面的)world, the pyramids in Egypt are the only ones still standing.
For 1,ooo years, they were the tallest buildings in the world. Built with prehistoric technology, they were an architectural mystery,as strange as the Sphinx(狮身人 面像).
No one really knows how they were built. The first historical record, by the Greek writer Heroditus, came 2,000 years later. Without hard facts, there have been many theories.
Hollywood has mostly followed the examples from the Greek record:100,000 slaves worked hard for 20 years. Others believe a very large slope snaked around the pyramids. An American recently put forward the theory that kites could have lifted the 2-ton stones.
Now Houdin, a French architect, says that after studying the pyramids for eight years,he has solved the mystery with the help of 3Dcomputer animation(三维动 画). He believes the pyramids were built from the inside out through an internal slope that goes around a central point. "This is completely new. Everyone before me thought that the pyramids were built from the outside, and only from the outside," he said.
Scholars of ancient Egypt are interested. "It's a theory which sounds reasonable. Scholars of ancient Egypt agree it ought to be tested, and it doesn't cause damage,so I wouldn't be surprised that within a year, we have the final answer,"said Bob Brier,a scholar at Long Island University.
If that is the case, we'll know the truth about the pyramids in the blink of an eye, considering this mystery has lasted for nearly 5,000 years.
5. According to the passage, how many ancient wonders in architecture have disappeared so far?
A. Four.
B. Five.
C. Six.

Examples of effective conservation of places matter to the world. They range from the 1960s Nubian campaign to safeguard Ancient Egyptian monuments from the waters of the Aswan Dam to the removal in 2018 of the Belize Barrier Reef from the List of World Heritage in Danger. Conservation is the core purpose of the World Heritage Convention and it may also be its biggest challenge.
The following example shows how successes at specific sites now serve as models for conservation and sustainable(可持续性)development.A year after Vienna was included on the World Heritage List in 2001, the World Heritage Committee(WHC) expressed concerns about the architectural solutions and height of four planned towers of the Wien-Mitte project. This development project, close to the Historic Centre of Vienna in the site's buffer zone, the one that lies between two or more other areas, affected the urban scale(规模) and visual effects in and around the property(地产). As a result of the Committee's concerns, Vienna changed its building codes and launched a new design competition for the Wien-Mitte project to work out architectural plans with reduced size in keeping with world heritage protection.
The successful practice inspired the government of the city to invite over 600 experts and professionals from 55 countries to an international conference on world heritage and contemporary architecture, held in Vienna in May 2005. The global discussion that followed, detailing an approach to managing conservation and development, was recorded in the UNESCO Recommendation in 2011.
The Recommendation put forwards an all-rounded and combined approach to balancing urban heritage conservation and economic development, arguing that active protection and management of urban heritage supports the goal of sustainable development.
The Recommendation supports the harmonious combination of contemporary involvement into the historic urban framework while holding on to values linked to history, memory and the environment.
24. Why does the author mention the Belize Barrier Reef in paragraph 1?
A. To explain the goal of the organisation.
B. To encourage the public to protect the world.

"You'll be blind by the time you're twenty-five,"a doctor at Children's Hospital predicted.“Your blood sugars are much too high. "It consumed me. No matter where I was or what I was doing,it was overhead like a dark cloud, waiting for just the right opportunity to break open and destroy my world.
I liked painting. Losing myself in painting filled me with peace. Painting provided me with the only place where I could escape from those threatening words.
When I was twenty-one,my right eye went blind. Precisely three months after my twenty-fifth birthday,I had a massive hemorrhage(大出 血) in my left eye because of an accident. For the next twenty years, vision came and went. I went through many eye operations in an attempt to keep my vision. But after one final operation,I lost the battle and all remaining vision. And I buried all dreams of painting.
Desperate,Ienrolled in(注册)a sixteen-week programme for the blind and visually impaired(损伤的).I learnt personal adjustment and the use of a computer with adaptive software. A whole new world opened up to me through this programme.

Hope went up for the first time in years.“By learning how to use hot keys to control the mouse, you can use Microsoft Access,Excel and Powerpoint,"my instructor added.
For the next several years,I learnt that when one door closes, another door opens. There are plenty of choices available for the blind and visually impaired through the gift of technology. Not only do I have a speaking computer, but I have a speaking watch, alarm clock and calculator.

We often hear about the importance of cultural heritage. But what is cultur. eritage?
Cultural heritage doesn't consist of money or property(财产),but of cultures, values and traditions. Cultural heritage means a shared connection, our belonging to a community. It represents our history and our identity;our connection with the past, our present, and the future.
Cultural heritage is also the result of a selection process:a process of remembering and forgetting that characterizes every human society constantly engaged in choosing—for both cultural and political reasons—what is worthy of being protected for future generations and what is not.
All peoples make their contribution to the culture of the world. That's why it's important to respect and safeguard all cultural heritage, through national laws and international agreements.Illegal trade of cultural objects, plundering other countries cultural heritage in war,and destruction of historical buildings and monuments cause irreparable damage to the cultural heritage of a country. UNESCO,founded in 1954, has adopted international agreements on the protection of cultural heritage,to promote intercultural understanding while stressing the importance of international cooperation.
The protection of cultural property is an old problem. One of the most common issues in protecting cultural heritage is the difficult relationship between the interests of the individual and the community.
Ancient Romans established that a work of art could be considered part of the heritage of the whole community, even if privately owned. For example, sculptures decorating the face of a private building were recognised as having a common value and couldn't be removed, since they stood in a public site, where they could be seen by all citizens.
Cultural heritage passed down to us from our parents must be protected for the benefit of all. In an era of globalisation, cultural heritage helps us remember our culture, and its understanding develops respect for each other and increases dialogues between different cultures.
32. How does the author explain “cultural heritage"?
A. By offering examples. B. By quoting experts.
C. By giving a definition. D. By making comparisons.
33. What does the underlined word “plundering” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Stealing. B. Buying. C. Copying. D. Admiri
34. What is the frequent problem in the protection of cultural heritage?
A. The protection method is not scientific.
B. The balance between private and public rights.
C. Who should be responsible for the protection.
D. Different standards for identifying cultural heritage.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A. Cultural Heritage and Its Protection B. UNESCO and Cultural Heritage C. Cultural Heritage and Personal Property D. Cultural Heritage Protection and Its Difficulty

Sites of cultural heritage often carry a large degree of value. Famous World Heritage Sites like the Pyramids of Giza or the Forbidden City in Beijing are truly impressive.36And they also show what the human mind and human culture are capable(有能力的)of.
However, cultural relics are more than just valuable in art—they tell a story of human history. Everything that makes up our society (our values, our language, our traditions, our way of life, etc. ) comes from our ancestors._37This is extremely valuable because it provides us with a way to understand different cultures around the world and how they join each other. It offers chances for us to learn from the past and develop a better future.
38Some relics were stolen from museums in Bagdad and the Iraq War caused great damage(破坏)to parts of the ancient city of Babylon. These acts are hugely harmful to the international society._39
So it is important to set an international rule to be followed during a war in order to greatly reduce the harms to cultural relics._40_In order to better protect cultural relics, the law must be used in all situations even though in certain cases,a war can be won more easily by attacking common people.
A. They are worth protecting.
B. They are beautiful pieces of art. C.Recently there have been many terrible acts.
D. Cultural heritage is important for many reasons.
E. Cultural relics are the only means we have of connecting with our past.
F. The harms do not only influence our present-day society, but all of our future.
G. This is the case, for example, with the laws about attacking common people in a war.

A little girl whose parents had died lived with her grandmother and slept in an upstairs bedroom.
One night there was a fire in the house and the grandmother died while trying to rescue the child. The fire spread quickly, and the situation was terrible.
Neighbours called the fire department, and then stood helplessly. They were unable to enter the house because flames blocked all the entrances. The little girl appeared at an upstairs window, crying for help, just as words spread among the crowd that the firefighters would be delayed a few minutes because they were all at another fire.
Suddenly,a man appeared with a ladder, put it up against the side of the house and disappeared inside. When he reappeared,he had the little girl in his arms. He delivered the child to the waiting arms below, and then disappeared into the night.
An investigation revealed that the child had no living relatives, and weeks later a meeting was held in the town hall to determine who would take the child into their home and bring her up.
A teacher said she would like to raise the child. She pointed out that she could ensure her a good education. A farmer offered her an upbringing on his farm. He pointed out that living on a farm was healthy and satisfying. Others also spoke, giving their reasons why it was to the child's advantage to live with them.
Finally, the town's richest resident rose and said,“I can give this child all the advantages that you have mentioned here, plus money and everything that money can buy.”
Throughout all this, the child remained silent, with her eyes fixed on the floor.
"Does anyone else want to speak?"asked the meeting chairman. A man came forward from the back of the hall. He walked slowly and appeared to be in pain.
Whenhegot to thefront of the room,he stood directlyin front of thelittlegirl and held out his arms. When asked about her choice, the girl gave people the reasons firmly.
