M: I saw a ground floor apartment with four bedrooms today.

W: Four bedrooms? It sounds huge.

M: Yeah, it was. But it was quite cheap. And it was a nice place. A big living room with big windows. And the furniture was modern.

W: Sounds great. Did you take it?

M: Well, no. The place was shared. Three boys are looking for a fourth roommate. They seemed nice enough, 11but the place was a

mess. It’s a shame because the place is not bad, quite close to school.

W: Don’t worry. 12Try to see more places tomorrow. Hopefully one of them will be alright. Or ask your classmates for more

information.

(Text 9)

W: 13Daniel Ash, your new book is a collection of articles about people with strange jobs.

M: 13Yes, I collected stories about unusual jobs from all over the world.

W: So you’re not talking about actors or shopping assistants.

M: No, all the people in the book have very strange jobs.

W: 14 I see, the book is structured based on different occupational fields. What about in the food industry?

M: Well, when a company wants to advertise food they sometimes need a food stylist. 15Their job is to enhance the visual appeal

of food in advertisements.

W: I’ve never heard of that job before.

M: Well, there are only about 20 food stylists in Britain. For example, when we look at a picture of strawberries and cream we’re

really looking at strawberries and white paint.

W: Really?

M: Yes, and they paint sausages with washing-up liquid, then coffee, to make them look natural.

W: 16Then the cleaning industry. Isn’t cleaning a normal job?

M: 16Normally, yes. But did you know there is a man in America called Brad Fields and …

(Text 10)

W: In this age of consumerism, we unnecessarily throw away millions of tons of clothes every year. A lot of these items are as good

as new. Some may be a little worn or miss a button or two. 17France has come up with a new plan to encourage people to

increase the longevity of their clothes. The government will pay a “repair bonus” to people who get their clothes and shoes

repaired at special workshops. The bonus allows individuals to claim back up to $27 of the cost of their repair bills. The plan will

be run by an eco-organization called Refashion. 18The government said the goal of its new program is “to support those who

carry out repairs”.

19An estimated 700,000 tons of clothing are thrown away in France every year. Around two-thirds of this ends up in

landfills. Furthermore, 20 the global fashion industry accounts for between 8–10 percent of global carbon releases every year.

The emergence of fast fashion has worsened this. Fast fashion is the practice of purchasing cheap clothes to wear just a few

times. It uses a lot of artificial materials and chemicals, which harm the environment. The Refashion group also aims to encourage

people to reduce the amount of clothing they buy, and to donate unwanted clothes and footwear to charity. It says over half of

donations can be reused, and a third can be recycled into something new.

W: Yes. I was thinking I might have the tomato soup, or maybe a cheese sandwich.

M: Look. It says everything on the lunchtime menu comes with fresh bread.

W: In that case, I’ll go for my usual choice.

(Text 2)

W: Did you take all these photos on the website?

M: Not all of them. I included some taken by friends, like this one of the desert. You can tell which are mine because the style’s

different. I’m interested in water, especially scenes showing rain.

(Text 3)

M: When will you be checking in, Ms. Yamada?

W: On May the first, and I’ll be leaving on the morning of 7th. I’d like a single room.

M: OK. And the single is $200 a night.

W: OK.

(Text 4)

W: Hello, International Globe Theater box office.

M: Oh, hello. I ordered three tickets for tomorrow night’s show, but you sent five instead.

(Text 5)

M: I really enjoyed the TV special about Chinese culture last night. Did you get home in time to see it?

W: Oh, yes, but I wish I could have stayed awake long enough to see the whole thing.

(Text 6)

W: So tomorrow night is the big night, right?

M: Right. I think I’ve got everything covered. I booked the band. I bought the balloons. I invited all of her friends …

W: … and the cake? ⑦Did you remember to order her cake? You know, the pink princess cake she was pointing at last time we

went to the bakery?

M: ⑦Oh yeah! When we went to pick up bread for Jeremy’s baseball game, I knew I was forgetting something!

W: I knew you’d forget. That’s why I called the bakery and ordered it this morning.

M: You always think of everything. Our little Michelle is going to be so surprised!

(Text 7)

M: Would you switch seats with me, Rose? ⑨This desk is too small for me.

W: ⑨I’m just as big as you are, John! If it’s too small for you, then it’s too small for me, too! Tell the teacher that your desk is

too small. I’m sure she’ll find a bigger one for you.

M: I already told her, and she told me to ask someone to switch seats with me.

W: ⑩You should ask Peter to switch with you. His desk is the biggest one in the whole class.

M: I asked Peter first, and he told me “No way!”

W: Peter is not the most considerate person in the world. I guess you’re stuck with that too small desk.

(Text 8)

M: Today I’m joined by Rosie Banks, who swims in international competitions. Rosie, welcome. Did you swim a lot when you were

very young?

W: Yes, before I started school, my dad used to take my brother Joel and me to the pool in town. He just wanted us to do something

in our free time so that we weren’t looking at a screen. 11 Joel was better at swimming than anyone we knew, and I practiced a

lot so I could swim as fast as him.

M: And then you joined a swimming club and started training?

W: Yes, I was invited to join the club when I was 12. It took an hour to get to their pool. Mom drove me. We had to leave for training

early each morning, but we enjoyed chatting on the journey. With all the training and competitions, 12 I couldn’t attend school

sometimes, which I was unhappy about. I was always much busier than my friends, but I still met up with them when I was

free.

M: I imagine it’s expensive taking part in international competitions. Do you get help with the costs?

W: Yes. Fortunately, a sportswear company pays for plane tickets, as long as I use their swimsuits. 13 It’d be great if they also gave

me fi nancial support for hotels.

(Text 9)

W: Dim, what do you think is the best way to improve my ability of note-taking?

M: Well, Diana. Everyone has his proper way of taking notes. But I have some suggestions for you.

W: Really? Tell me.

M: You can discuss the problem with some of your classmates. From the discussions you will get to know their method and may fi nd

your own way. What’s more, your confi dence will increase in this way. 15However, you should never reproduce others’ ideas in

the discussions.

W: Anything else?

M: Also, you can turn to Student Support Service, and ask the experts for help. 16But the place is very

small and you have to go a long way to the service center when you have questions.

W: These are helpful suggestions. Any more?

M: Yes. Consulting books is a good way to know how to improve note-taking, too. However, the

opinions in them may be too general.

W: So I have to read carefully and practice a lot. Well, 17 I think I’d like to consult the expert from Student Support Service.

(Text 10)

M: I want to tell you about some talks that I’m arranging. 18The plan is to have a different speaker each month, on the first

Tuesday. I know a lot of you do other clubs on Mondays and Thursdays. These talks will take place outside school hours, so

they’ll start at a quarter to fi ve. I’ve arranged two talks so far. The fi rst will be by a woman called Ellie Brown and she’ll be

speaking on November 2nd. Ellie works as a travel writer now and her pieces appear in lots of magazines. She off ered to tell us

about her schooling and the country of Brazil, 19but at last we agreed that she’d talk about her most recent trip, which was to

Australia — as I know you’re studying that country in your history class at the moment. The second talk, by Henry Fowler, is not

actually going to be on December 7th — Henry couldn’t make it — but on the next Tuesday, the 14th. Henry works as a camera

operator and he has lots of experience of making fi lms. He’s going to tell us about fi lming wildlife shows. He’s got lots of great

stories to share. And if any of you are interested to know more about his work, 20 you can buy his book Behind the Lens after

the talk. You’ll be able to get it for 9 pounds, which is great because it’s 15 pounds in the bookstores.

W: Yes. I’m not sure what to do. I could sell it and buy a bike. Or I could have it fixed one more time.

M: You know it’ll only break down again. It always does!

(Text 4)

M: Are you going to Mary’s party tomorrow night?

M: Please call it off, I must go to my daughter’s graduation ceremony.

(Text 6)

M: Your road trip seemed to fly by. How was it?

W: It was so beautiful. ⑥The landscapes were another level.

M: ⑦Was it nice staying in luxury hotels for a change? Rather than working in them.

W: ⑦Absolutely, it was good to be on the other side. I love my job but it’s good to have a nice long relaxing break.

M: How was the food?

W: We always had something a little different. Most of them were uniquely delicious, but overall, it didn’t meet our expectations.

(Text 7)

W: I’d like to ask you some questions about your eating habits.

M: Just ask whatever you like.

W: How many meals do you eat a day?

M: ⑧Normally three but on Saturdays and Sundays I usually don’t eat breakfast because I sleep in.

W: Do you eat out often?

M: Maybe four times a month.

W: Do you drink any alcohol?

M: Yes, I usually have a glass of red wine or white wine with dinner. Later in the evening I often drink a small bottle of beer.

(Text 8)

M: So, how’s the new job?

W: It’s not too bad. I’m still learning the ropes but I’m really enjoying it. My new manager’s great. She’s been tracking my training to

make sure that everyone takes time to show me how all the tools work.

M: That’s good. I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

W: Yes. And the flexible working hours are suitable for me. It is a little farther from my home, though.

M: Well, 10 you were lucky before. A 25-minute journey is the dream. It takes me 40 minutes to drive to work on a good day, 50 if

there’s traffic.

M: Hi, Julie.

W: Hi, Stan.

M: 13Our new classmate Dario wants to make some new friends here. What do you suggest?

W: How about going to the gym?

M: Well, it’s quite expensive. Maybe he can’t afford it. And it’s not easy to chat when you’re exercising. 14 I think going to the club

is better. What do you think?

W: I agree, because you can play table tennis there and dance and it’s fun. Getting a dog is good too. He can take it for walks and

meet people in the park.

M: That’s a good idea, but when he goes on holiday somebody has to look after it and food for dogs is expensive. This one’s good —

learning to play the guitar.

W: Do you think so? 15 I don’t agree. He’ll only meet his teacher.

M: Yes, but if he can play the guitar he can join a band and make lots of friends that way. 16Or what about this one — in a theater

helping with a play? I think that would be a really good way to meet people.

W: Yes, 16he likes acting. So I think that’s best.

M: Or going to the club, that’s good as well.

(Text 10)

M: There are about 60,000 people in my town, so it’s quite large. It’s an old town and luckily it’s been well looked after, so it

looks good, especially 17 the old square in the town center which is famous for its 500-year-old houses. 18We don’t have

subway trains, but there is an excellent bus service. I never have to wait long for one and they are not expensive. There

are even night buses, which is great because I love going out in the evenings. My town has

a good range of restaurants, bars and nightclubs and in fact people come from quite far away to

go to them. 19We’ve also got an arts center, where you can see plays, films and exhibitions of

paintings and they are all under one roof, which is great. There is also a museum which I’ve

been to a few times. It’s quite interesting because the Romans used to live here, so there are some

nice things to look at. 20But there is nowhere to play football. We do have lovely parks and open

spaces but none of them have football fields in them. That’s one thing I would like to improve

about my town.

W: Well, it’s up to you.

(Text 7)

M: Hi, Bella. How are the preparations going for the launch of our new restaurant this Friday?

W: Great! Yesterday we cleaned it thoroughly and bought all kinds of supplies. Everything inside the restaurant is ready, so ⑧we

spent a few hours this morning handing out advertisements in town. And it seems that many people plan to attend our

opening ceremony!

M: I hope so. Bella, ⑨can you get in touch with all of the staff and ask them to come early on Friday? I’d like to speak to them

before the first customers come in.

W: ⑨No problem. I’ll do that right away.

M: Sure.

(Text 8)

W: Hello? My name’s Jenny. 10 I’m calling in regards to the ad I saw in the newspaper this morning for the receptionist position.

M: Ah, yes indeed. Do you have any experience working in the front of a busy office?

W: I have some. 11When I was 17, I answered phone calls and made scheduled appointments for my dad’s landscaping company.

M: Oh, how big is your dad’s company?

W: Well, it’s just him, my mom, and my big brother. They cut grass for people in our town who are too busy to cut it themselves.

M: I see. Can you commit to coming into our office Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 5:00?

W: Yes. I’m taking night classes at community college, but my first class isn’t until 6 p.m.

M: 12Why don’t you come by our office in Grand Junction on Friday and we can talk face-to-face? We can do it before your

first class, say, 4 p.m.

W: 12OK. Thanks for the opportunity!

(Text 9)

M: Excuse me, but is your name Lisa Evans? Professor Kennedy said that 14 I should speak with you before I carry out an

experiment.

W: Yes. First time in the lab?

M: Yeah. I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to do.

W: Let me go over some of the safety rules in the lab so that you know how to act properly while you’re here. This will ensure that

you don’t do any harm to yourself or your lab partner.

M: OK, what do I need to know?

W: First of all, you will not joke around, nor will you run, fight, or play games. And you need to wear proper clothes in the lab. This

means 15 you must wear a lab coat at all times. You must also wear gloves, and you also need to wear safety glasses.

(Text 10)

W: In Britain, the ancient tradition of open-air performance is still alive and well. Cornwall has some

of Britain’s oldest working theaters, with one open-air theater actually built by the sea, a project

only recently completed. Two actors, Dave and Muriel, came from London theaters to join a theater

company called Coastline. They now perform in just such a theater. They say that one thing about

performing outside is they never know what’ll happen. For example, if a bird lands on stage, they

can’t act as if it’s not there — the audience are all watching it. 18So they just bring the bird into

the play, too. The weather can also be diffi cult. Sometimes it’s been very bad. The actors will ask

the audience if they really want to stay. 19Usually they will sit with their coats and umbrellas and

say, “Yes, please carry on!” They must feel it isn’t fun, but no one’s returned their tickets so far.

Coastline’s director, John Barnack, works hard to introduce people to open-air theaters. Many people feel open-air theaters are

like clubs where they don’t belong. But he doesn’t think so. He says that sitting in the open air can change that feeling. 20The

audience are far more involved. They aren’t sitting in the dark, at a distance like in normal theaters, and that improves

the actors’ performances, too. He is very proud of the work they’ve done so far.

W: Maybe 1869?

M: It is actually in between.

W: 10 1889?

M: 10Bingo, you hit the mark.

W: I wonder why the Eiffel Tower was built.

M: Many travelers come to France to see the Eiffel Tower. So it is easy to think it was built for tourism purposes, but that’s not true.

11One of the purposes was to show the world France’s industrial skills.

W: Interesting. I bet it was expensive to build the Eiffel Tower. I think it showed how wealthy France was!

M: I know something interesting about Gustave Eiffel. He actually owned an apartment on the top level. Only a small number of

people were allowed there, such as those from the science community. It was not open to the public and he refused to rent it out

although some wealthy people offered to pay him a lot. 12However, now you can look inside the apartment from the window if

W: Sure, we do a lot of work! 13Sometimes you just need to take a break and clear your head, you know.

M: You’re so lucky … You should see where I work.

W: You don’t like it?

M: It’s not the size of the room that bothers me. 14 It’s the fact that no one talks to each other. We all sit there in rows, disconnected ...

It’s really uncomfortable, to be honest.

W: 15So why not move? With your background you could find something better easily.

M: 16But I think if I put a couple more years in, I could move up in the company. If I leave now, the time I spent will have

been for nothing.

W: If that’s how you feel about it, why would you want to stay? You really think being a manager would be any better?

M: I hope so … Anyway, I don’t want to think about it any more. How about that game of table tennis?

W: Alright, but I should warn you, I’ve been practicing a lot …

M: Open wide. Now show me where it hurts.

W: Here on the bottom, especially when I bite into something hot or cold. And I can’t concentrate on class when it hurts.

(Text 2)

M: Do you have any change for one dollar?

W: What do you want it for?

M: I need to pay for the parking fee.

W: I can just give you 4 quarters if that’ll help you.

(Text 3)

W: I really have no idea what the news is talking about. I’m poor at English.

M: Well, it takes time to understand that. I have several British friends. You can talk with them to improve your listening.

(Text 4)

W: It’s a shame this restaurant is so expensive.

M: I agree. I wish it were cheaper.

W: Me, too. I was hoping we could eat here tonight, but it looks like that’s impossible.

M: I’m afraid so.

(Text 5)

W: Cut the tomato, add the oil and some salt, then pour them into the pan.

M: Sorry. I didn’t quite catch your words. Could you say it again?

(Text 6)

W: Good morning, Mr. Hands.

M: Morning, Mrs. Green. What’s up?

W: Well, I’m going to be out of town attending a meeting all next week, and ⑥I’m looking for someone to take care of my cat

while I’m gone. Could I talk you into it?

M: You know I’d be glad to, but I’ll be busy preparing a report. I’ll have to hand it in next weekend. ⑦Let me give my sister a call.

She loves animals and she lives only a couple of blocks from your flat.

W: Oh, that’s so nice of you.

(Text 7)

M: How shall we tell staff about the new company building?

W: ⑧I’ll tell everyone at the same time in our largest office. And, I’d like the staff barbecue to be a surprise. I’ll email everyone the

details later.

M: Shall we tell them why we’re moving to a new building?

W: Yes, I’ll explain that because we’ll be ten kilometers away from the town center, ⑨the rent’s much lower, but the offi ces are the

same size.

M: Sure. Today’s May 31st, so when will we be in the new building?

W: By July 1st staff must start packing. Then August 15th will be the fi rst day in their new offi ces.

M: OK. You’ve asked me to order a few things. I’ve bought the signs that we’ll need. ⑩And I need to ensure that I obtain keys for

each individual. We’re using the same desks and chairs.

W: Good.

(Text 8)

M: Good morning, Linda.

W: Good morning. Oh, I just realized that 11 the Collins report is due this Friday morning.

M: Take it easy, Linda. 11You will have three days to work on it from today.

W: 12But I haven’t started it yet and I’ve got many other things to take care of. In addition to that, I have meetings all day

today and tomorrow. I even can’t take a day off these days. What am I supposed to do?

M: 13Why don’t you explain your situation to the manager and ask if you can hand it in next Monday morning?

W: 13 I think I’d better do that later.

(Text 9)

W: All right, let’s start with your employment history. First of all, are you working now?

M: Yes, I am. I work for Parker Industries. I joined the company right after I fi nished studying.

W: Why do you want to make a change?

M: Well, 15my job tends to be somewhat dull. I want to do something more creative or challenging.

W: OK. And what did you study in college?

M: My degree is in information systems. 16 I started in 2007 and graduated in 2009. And I’ve also taken some classes in computer.

W: Were they part of your degree?

M: No, I’m interested in that area. 17 I signed up for some classes at a technical school. I’m still taking classes there. I’ve been

there for one year now.

W: Good. You say you design web pages. Tell me about that.

M: Oh, that’s my hobby. I made my fi rst web page about four years ago. When my friends saw it, they wanted their own, so I helped

them out. It’s really a lot of fun.

W: Great!

(Text 10)

W: Welcome to the Selmore Public Library which has just been reopened. If you stand in front of the information desk and look at the

opposite wall, 18 you will see shelves of books in the left-hand corner. This is where you will fi nd a large number of novels

and short stories. The area directly opposite the information desk is a section where people can study. The library provides

computers for users free of charge in the computer room on the second fl oor beside the exercise books but the study area is for

people to use their own notebook computers. You can also do your homework there.

In the right-hand corner of this fl oor there is a cafe. 19A selection of daily newspapers is always available there but you can

also take magazines into the cafe to read while you have a drink. You will fi nd them on the shelves to the left of the cafe.

You are not allowed to take any novels or any other books from the shelves into the cafe.

To one side of the information desk is a door leading to a gallery. 20This was added to the library as a public space where talks

are given once a week on a Saturday by visiting authors. There are notices advertising the talks in the study area.

M: Wow! Those flowers are so colorful and detailed! How long did they take?

W: About an hour to paint but college took me seven years and I never stopped after. So, you could say, most of my life!

M: Ha-ha, very smart! I’d love to start painting. Any recommendations?

W: Yeah, I teach at the local art school. Come to my classes!

(Text 3)

W: We are going to try the new restaurant tonight, the one by Green Park. Would you like to come?

M: I doubt I can make it, you know, too much office work these days. But thank you.

(Text 4)

M: That would be $199, madam.

W: I don’t have cash on me. Can I use my credit card to pay my fees, or do I have to give you a check?

(Text 5)

W: What about this one? It is quite useful if you do a lot of reading at night.

W: Yeah. It would be better to have one with an arm, so you can move it.

W: ⑥Oh, yeah. Thanks.

M: Wow, it looks great! What are you going to do?

W: ⑦I will buy Mary a dress first. Then we’ll see a movie together. It’s her birthday.

M: That sounds like fun. Have a good time!

(Text 7)

M: Best of luck with our tennis competition, Vicki! It’s tomorrow, isn’t it?

W: Thanks, Joe! They might have to cancel it. It hasn’t stopped raining all day today and we’re playing outdoors.

M: Have you looked it up on the Internet? ⑧It says on this page that it’s going to be dull but dry. It won’t be sunny though.

W: That’s OK — ⑨I don’t like playing when it’s hot but I’ll take my sun cream just in case.

(Text 8)

M: Were you having a party in your flat last night?

W: What? I’ve got too much college work to do to have time for parties.

M: So what was all that music?

W: Well, it helped me think about my work.

M: I can’t believe it. 10 It was loud enough for me to be able to listen to it in my flat.

W: Oh, was it that loud?

M: Actually it sounded quite nice in the distance. I thought you would invite some friends round.

W: But when I have friends in I don’t play loud music.

M: I do like something quiet in the background when we’re talking. Of course, it’s the opposite when I’m trying to study. 11 I find if

there’s music I’m paying attention to that instead of the work. Well, what part of the day do you work best?

W: Usually it has to be in the evening, although really I’m a morning person. But I have to go into college all day most days.

M: Vacation? No, 13 I was there on business. But after the meeting there, I went to Paris because I had a get-together party with my

college friends there. Then it was a trip in Paris.

W: How was it?

M: Fantastic. I went to many famous tourist attractions. Look, this is a picture I took on the top of the Eiffel Tower. 14 It was on my

third day in Paris, and the next day I took the evening flight to come back.

W: Oh, then 15did you go to the Louvre?

M: 15Of course! That was the first thing I did in Paris. You can’t go to Paris without going to their most famous art gallery!

W: Did you see the mysterious smile of Mona Lisa?

M: No, I’m not an artist. I didn’t see her mysterious smile or the good skill of the painter. 16But I was surprised by how small the

Mona Lisa was, though.

(Text 10)

M: Hello, everyone. I am the manager of this school. Sorry to interrupt your class. I just want to make a quick announcement about

our summer timetable. Shimmers Dance School will be offering new classes this spring due to strong demand. First of all, your

old friend Angela Stevenson will be back this term, running the pop dance class. This class will be on Tuesdays, and instead of the

normal hour from 6:30 to 7:30, we’ll be running the class for an hour and a half, so it will continue until 8 o’clock. This means we

have to charge higher fees, but only a little higher: 17 from eight pounds fifty to ten pounds fifty. That’s only two pounds for the

extra half hour. 18Next, Janine Davis will still be teaching the street dance classes. Instead of being on Mondays these classes

will be on Wednesday nights from 7 o’clock to 8 o’clock. The fee will still be seven pounds fifty for the hour. Last but not least,

19Andrew is taking over the folk dance class. 20The class is to be very popular as folk dance is a great way to get fit while

learning new dancing skills. This will cost eleven pounds. All the other classes remain the same as the winter timetable. We hope

there’s something for all of you at the Shimmers! Wish you a good time!

(Text 2)

W: Is that a new bike you’ve got there?

M: Yes. I’m sure it will improve my fitness levels!

W: You’ll save money too, because you won’t need to get the bus to school anymore.

M: That’s true, and now I don’t have to ask mom for a lift whenever I want to go anywhere. That’s what makes the biggest

W: You’re lucky. ⑩Under 18s only pay five pounds fifty a month. It’s twenty pounds for adults.

M: Great. Is the gym open every day?

W: Not on Wednesday.

M: That doesn’t matter. 11 I want to come on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. 12Do you have lessons? I need to learn how to

use the machines.

W: 12Yes, we have courses every month. The next one begins on June 2nd. Would you like me to book you on that?

M: 12Yes, please.

(Text 9)

M: You should leave the computer and rest your eyes for a while, Amy.

W: OK, Dad. 13 I’m working on an article for the high-school newspaper.

M: What’s it about?

W: The feelings about graduation.

M: How do you feel?

W: Me? A little worried. 14But excited too.

M: 14 I feel the same way. You are leaving home and moving to college.

W: Leaving home is part of growing up.

M: Yes. 15Well, I just spoke with Charley Rafer, the president of the University of Michigan. He is my classmate and we were

both on tennis team. He’s going to be in New York tomorrow to interview applicants for admission. And he’s agreed to meet you.

W: But I may not want to go to Michigan.

M: It’s one of the best schools in the country. I studied medicine there.

W: But I don’t want to be a doctor like you. 16Dad, making my own decision is also part of growing up.

M: 16You’re right. Let’s meet with Charley. It doesn’t mean you are going to Michigan, but the interview will be a good experience

for you.

W: In that case, it’s OK.

M: Good evening, I’m Charles McKay, and this is the 9 o’clock evening news. The top news is for sports fans. It was an exciting day

in world soccer. 17Mexico beat France 7 to 6, in a close game that off ered us plenty of excitement. The game between Canada and

Argentina ended in a tie, 3 to 3. And in a game that’s still in progress, Italy is leading England 2 to 1, with 30 minutes left to go.

The war against cigarette smoking is heating up again. 18A set of laws were introduced today that would make it illegal

to advertise any tobacco product in any form of media. That means ads would be stopped from newspapers, magazines,

televisions and radio. The laws would also prevent tobacco producers from giving money to support sporting events. This is the

strongest anti-smoking laws that have been introduced to date. 19Tobacco producers insist that the laws would be of no use.

They say that in parts of the country where advertising has been stopped, cigarette smoking has actually increased.

And now for tomorrow’s weather: the morning will be dark with clouds, with possible light showers. 20 In the afternoon things

should brighten up, which is good news for all the solar-powered homes in this cold winter! Thanks and we hope to see you

again tomorrow.

M: Oh, okay. If I arrive at around 4:30 tomorrow afternoon, can I open a new bank account?

W: Of course. Sometimes, it’s very crowded though.

M: And does it usually take long to open a new account?

W: It depends. Usually it takes about thirty minutes, 12but if you bring a downloaded application form all filled out before the

visit, it can save some time. You can download it from our website. Oh, and you must bring some identification.

M: Thank you for the information. Just to clarify, what forms of identification do I need to bring with me?

W: You will need to bring a government-issued ID, such as a passport or a national identity card. 13 It’s important to have the

original document with you, as photocopies or digital versions may not be accepted.

(Text 9)

M: Today we have Jenna with us. Jenna, you went on a driving experience day for teenagers at a racetrack recently. Why?

W: Well, 14my parents bought my brother a ticket for his birthday. I was so envious and, as he already drives a car, he said I

could take his place. My best friend thought it sounded cool so she’s going to go too.

M: How did you feel when you arrived at the racetrack?

W: I waited in reception. 15Then everyone who was driving that day arrived, just a couple of girls my age and two older teenagers.

That was it, not what I’d expected.

M: What would you do differently next time?

W: 16 If there is a next time, I’ll probably do my best to learn what comes next as I am driving, so I’d be ready for a corner or

whatever.

M: Do you think the instructions useful?

W: Yeah. The instructions I was given helped me to understand all the special driving techniques, so I didn’t feel I had loads of

questions I needed to ask.

M: Thank you, Jenna.

Daylight Saving Time, back in the 1790’s. At the time, people thought he was joking. They couldn’t believe he was serious.

Many years later, during World WarⅠ, people realized what a clever idea he’d had. In the spring and summer, the sun rises earlier.

By moving the clock ahead, people can take advantage of the extra daylight and save energy. Energy is important, of course,

especially during wartime. The United States operated on Daylight Saving Time during World WarⅠand again during World

WarⅡ. After that, some parts of the country followed Daylight Saving Time and some didn’t. Beginning and ending dates were

different from place to place. 20This confusing situation ended in 1966, when the Uniform Time Act was passed, which made

the beginning and ending dates of Daylight Saving Time fixed. Since then, some lawmakers have suggested that the United

States go to year-round Daylight Saving Time.

M: I’ve stopped going to the swimming pool recently, although last time I went there weren’t too many people.

W: Are you busy at work? I suppose you could go at the weekend.

M: Well, I think the changing rooms need better security.

(Text 3)

W: My apartment is extraordinarily tidy! I wasn’t expecting such service at such a low price.

M: You are lucky! I booked a cleaning service last week. It was very disappointing. I was so angry that I called the manager.

W: Were you able to get your money back?

M: Yeah, all of it.

(Text 4)

W: I’d like to see that movie playing at the Times, but only if I have someone to come with me. Are you interested?

(Text 5)

W: I like my apartment, though it’s a pity I can’t turn the central heating up in winter.

M: Does it get noisy? It can do at mine, especially in the morning rush hour.

(Text 6)

W: Have you heard that children at Grantleigh School have just published a book about how to live healthy lives?

M: ⑥What? You mean the children published a book?

W: Yeah. The book contains a range of articles on diet and exercise, all of which were written by the children. It had cartoons

and photographs, and these were all created by the children too. ⑦The book is the end product of a project developed by

Grantleigh’s headteacher with a view to encouraging the children to learn to work together as a group.

M: That’s interesting.

(Text 7)

W: Can you tell me how much a day return is for Manchester and also whether it will be cheaper with a student card?

another one at 10:15 and tickets are £35 so they are a bit cheaper. ⑨Now you can get reductions on that so with a student

M: OK. Now, about this new store we’re opening, we’ve decided that on the day it opens, each customer who buys something in the

W: Yes.

M: We’ll be advertising in the local press this week beforehand and on billboards, and on local radio. And what I’d like you to do is

to find a suitable gift. Or, er, gifts.

W: OK.

M: I don’t think it necessarily has to be the same for everyone. Senior citizens aren’t our target customers. 11 I think we can expect a

lot of young mothers and a lot of teenagers and I think you should aim for about 5,000 items.

W: No problem. And 12 I think we should have the company’s name on the gifts.

M: That’s a great idea.

(Text 9)

W: Well, I know the computing conference is for three days but actually I want to attend on Friday and Saturday only. Will that work

out to be any cheaper?

M: Let me have a look. 13Well, you could register for the two days separately, but that wouldn’t actually save you very much as

it still costs each day. In fact, if you could register for the three days, you also get an invitation to a free dinner on Saturday night,

so that’s probably the better option.

W: Right, I’ll do that. How much will the fees be in that case?

M: It’s $75.

W: All right. I’d like to register for the full three days. Now, can I pay that by credit card?

M: I’m afraid not. You’ll have to send a check to us, or you can pay in cash at the conference office.

W: Fine. 14So it’s probably the easiest if I pay by check. How about accommodation? I guess that’s not included in the price.

M: No, I’m sorry, 15but there’s a very reasonable guest house which is $25 per night. And I think that includes your breakfast.

16But if you’re interested you’ll need to book soon, because there’s always a heavy demand for them.

W: OK. 15 I’d book for 2 nights. Is it close to the conference center?

M: It’d be about a ten-minute walk away from here.

(Text 10)

W: Good morning and welcome to the Food and Drink Show. 17 I’m Christine Whitelaw and I work as a Personal Assistant to

the renowned chef Patrick Millar. Are you wondering how I became a PA to such an important figure in the food and drink

industry? Well, I always wanted to work in this industry, 18 so after leaving school I completed a year on a cookery course

before spending another year at a secretarial college. Then I worked as a PA to a director of the Palace Hotel in London for

three years before hearing that Patrick Millar was advertising for a new PA. I applied, had two interviews and got the job.

I usually meet Patrick first of all to run through his diary. 19 If customers are expected for lunch, I may take them on a prelunch tour of the cookery school. It has a collection of 6,000 cookery books. 19Then I take them to the restaurant. In the

afternoons I usually do emails and make phone calls. If Patrick is busy in the mornings, we sometimes have a working lunch

together in his office.

I do enjoy cooking but I have no plans to work as a cook. 20The job I have combines everything I love: food, meeting people

and being someone’s right hand.

W: Well, I’m sure we can have the shirts ready, but unfortunately we won’t be able to get the jacket to you before tomorrow. All

repairs have to be sent out of the hotel.

(Text 2)

W: You’re nearly two hours late!

M: I’m very sorry. I should have been here at eight o’clock, but unfortunately I was held up on my way.

(Text 3)

M: You’ll never guess who I met at work today … Whitney Spearmint. She looked very beautiful!

W: I think it’s about time you stopped inventing stories about meeting pop stars, Martin. After all, you are nearly 30 and you

work in a post offi ce.

(Text 4)

W: Do you fancy coming along to tomorrow’s Nature talk? The last one on rivers was very good.

M: Yeah. I heard it’s about rainforest this time.

W: Actually there’s a talk on that next month. This one will deal with something closer to home — wild fl owers in gardens.

(Text 5)

W: Have you tried playing City Driving yet?

M: Yes, but I was a bit disappointed with it, actually.

W: Me too. But the songs that play while you’re driving add to the action at least.

M: I only got to the fi fth stage of the game — the racing itself was fairly exciting.

(Text 6)

M: Have you been to the new restaurant on the Kings Street?

W: Yes, I guess it wasn’t too bad.

M: I thought the food was pretty good value at least.

W: It’s true they don’t charge too much.

M: The service was slow though when I went. The waiter had to apologize.

W: I don’t mind waiting when the food’s all freshly cooked. ⑥But it was quick enough when I went. That was just it —

everything seemed to either be out of a tin or frozen food heated up in a microwave.

M: Such a shame, but you’re absolutely right — ⑦even if it isn’t an expensive place to eat.

(Text 7)

M: Hi. My watch has stopped and I need to replace the battery. Also I need a new watch band.

W: Well, we can replace the battery, ⑧but I’m not sure we have this model band in black. We can order one for you today. Are you

in a hurry?

M: I’m going out of town on Wednesday morning, so could I pick it up on Tuesday?

W: Well, we can change the battery by this afternoon, ⑧ ⑨but if you want us to replace the band, I’m afraid we wouldn’t have

that until Thursday.

(Text 8)

M: Hi, Monica. What’s going on?

W: Oh, my car’s having problems again. ⑩It’s starting to overheat whenever I’m in heavy traffi c, and two days ago I had to pull

off the expressway and wait until the engine cooled down.

M: What are you going to do?

W: I really don’t know. I’ll have to figure out something; 11 the bus service is terrible around where I live. Anyway, could I ask you a

favor?

M: Of course. What is it?

W: You know, tomorrow’s Monday and we’re supposed to turn in our homework in English, but I’ve only gotten halfway through it.

If I came over, would you help me finish it?

M: Sure, 12 actually I haven’t finished the homework either; I’ve just been putting it off, so it’s good you’re coming over.

(Text 9)

W: We both start our new jobs next month, and we have to look for an apartment.

M: Hey, darling. I hadn’t realized it was so close already. What kind of place would you like?

W: Well, it’s too late to think about buying a house somewhere. We’ll have to rent an apartment first. 14 It should be near the bus

stop or subway.

M: What about the size?

W: Well, a two-bedroom place is OK.

M: It won’t be expensive. What kind of price do you think we can afford?

W: Oh, about six hundred dollars. It doesn’t have to be equipped with furniture. We have our own furniture. The apartment should not

be in the city center. I like quietness.

M: Yeah, I agree. 16 I’d like the apartment to be near a park, so we can go running outdoors as usual.

W: Well, we can look for the information on the Internet or call Lily. She knows a lot about houses.

M: 15 I personally prefer looking through the local paper. We can take a look in the For Rent section.

W: 15That sounds like a great plan. Let’s hope we can find something good!

(Text 10)

W: What’s thought to be the oldest message in a bottle yet found has been picked up on a beach in Western Australia. Tonya and her

family were walking along the beach and trying to help pick up some rubbish when she discovered a glass bottle with a damp note

inside. She suspected it was a trick. 17But she kept the bottle thinking it might look good on her bookcase.

She put it in her oven to dry out the paper note. Later, she noticed faint handwriting on the note, with a date of 12 June 1886

and the name of the ship, Paula. It also gave the geographical position of the ship, 18which had been sailing in the Indian

Ocean nearly 600 miles away. A little more detective work online and some help from the Museum of Western Australia helped

to confirm the find was real. The ship had been traveling from Cardiff to Indonesia. 19The bottle would have been thrown

overboard by the crew as part of an experiment by the German Naval Observatory to track global ocean currents.

The note instructed the finder to send it back to Hamburg. 20The bottle will however stay in Australia and go on display in the

museum in Perth.

M: Do you want to go to the concert this evening?

W: Yeah. We could go and eat something first.

M: All right. Why don’t I wait for you outside the bookstore at about six?

W: OK. I’ll go there immediately after I finish work. Then we can look for a cafe before the concert.

(Text 2)

M: Professor Smith, I’m confused by my final grade since I did so well on the last few tests.

W: Well, I’ve been known to make mistakes in the past. Let’s see … yes, your attendance record for this term was low. That’s the

reason for your low grade.
