√Sustainable Impact Award
“Human at the Heart” Award
Name of the project : ECO Green Heat: Decarbonizing Industrial Manufacturing Through Next-Generation Vacuum Heat Treatment Technology
Date of implementation : 2022
Your project in one sentence (max 30 words in English): ECM China's ECO vacuum furnaces slash heat treatment energy and emissions, driving China's dual-carbon goals through French green engineering.
2. PROJECT INFORMATION
Project presentation (max 150 words): ECM Technologies China has re-engineered industrial heat treatment around sustainability through its ECO series vacuum furnace platform. Designed and assembled in Tianjin, ECO furnaces replace energy-intensive atmosphere furnaces and oilquenching systems with precision vacuum processing and high-pressure gas quenching, cutting electricity consumption and eliminating process gas emissions and hazardous oil waste. The initiative aligns with China's dual-carbon strategy and green manufacturing policies. Beyond product design, ECM China operates an ISO 14001-certified facility with smart energy monitoring and localized supply chains. The company also equips clients with carbon footprint assessments and operator training, extending environmental impact across the industry. By merging French thermal engineering expertise with China's decarbonization agenda, ECM delivers measurable, scalable carbon reduction in one of manufacturing's most energy-intensive sectors.
• Argument 1 - Measurable Carbon & Energy Impact
ECO series vacuum furnaces deliver quantifiable environmental performance. By replacing conventional atmosphere furnaces with vacuum processing, clients eliminate continuous endothermic gas flow and associated CO2 emissions. Advanced insulation, optimized chamber geometry, and heat-recovery systems reduce electricity consumption per treatment cycle. High-pressure gas quenching replaces oil-guenching, removing hazardous waste streams and vapor emissions. For a typical automotive heat treatment line, this translates into significant annual CO2 avoidance and energy savǐngs, directly contributing to client Scope 3 reduction targets and China's national carbon peak commitment.
• Argument 2 - Circular & Scalable Product Design
The ECO platform is engineered for longevity and recyclability. Modular architecture allows field replacement of heating elements, insulation, and vacuum pumps rather than full-unit disposal, achieving over 90% recyclability at end-of-life. Standardized chassis and control systems across laboratory to industrial scales minimize designphase resource waste and enabTe efficient production scaling. This circular approach reduces embodied carbon per unit and aligns with China's circular economy promotion law.
• Argument 3 - End-to-End Green Operations
ECM China's Tianjin facility practices what it sells. ISO 14001-certified environmental management governs waste segregation, material recycling, and energy monitoring. A Smart Energy Management System tracks real-time consumption of electricity, water, and compressed air, driving continuous efficiency gains. Localized sourcing within a 300km radius cuts transportation emissions and strengthens regional green supply chains, operationalizing MiIT guidelines at the factory level.
• Argument 4 – Client & Industry Ecosystem Enablement
Sustainability impact extends beyond ECM's own footprint. The company provides clients with standardized carbon footprint assessments for existing heat treatment operations, identifying decarbonization pathways. Through the Tianjin Technical Academy, operators receive training on energy-efficient furnace use and predictive maintenance, extending equipment life and reducing waste. ECM also contributes to China Heat Treatment Industry Association green manufacturing standards, pushing sector-wide benchmarks upward.
• Argument 5- Sino-French Policy Alignment
The initiative bridges French engineering excellence with China's decarbonization agenda. ECM leverages EU Green Deal expertise in precision thermal engineering while adapting solutions to China's industrial context, ETS compliance framework, and Made in China 2025 green development pillar. This bilateral collaboration model demonstrates how foreign-invested enterprises can serve as accelerators for host-country climate goals while maintaining commercial competitiveness.
Energy-Efficient Carbon Reduction
• Quantified Carbon Reduction - ECO vs. Conventional Atmosphere Furnaces: Independent lifecycle analysis demonstrates that ECM's ECO series vacuum furnaces deliver transformative environmental performance versus traditional sealed-quench atmosphere furnaces. For a standard 300kg automotive shaft load (20ÑiCrMo2, 1mm case depth), the ECO/ICBP Duo platform achieves:
• Process time: reduced by 40% (600 min → 360 min)
• Electricity consumption: reduced by 39% (1.66 → 1.01 kWh/kg treated)
• Process gas consumption: reduced by 98% (48 → 1 L/kg treated)
• Total CO₂ emissions: reduced by 89% (461 → 49 gCO2/kg treated)
• Scalable Impact – ICBP Flex/Jumbo vs. Pusher Furnace Lines: For continuous production environments, ECM's multi-chamber ICBPsystems versus conventional pusher atmosphere furnaces (400kg load, 16MnCr5, Germany grid factor)deliver:
• Electricity: reduced by 32% (1.436 → 0.973 kWh/kg)
• Process gas: reduced by 99% (246.8 → 1.7 L/kg)
• CO₂emissions: reduced by 81% (2,791 → 530 gCO2/kg treated)
• Quenching Emission Elimination: High-pressure gas quenching (N) versus oil quenching eliminates post-process washing energy (40 kWh/load) and reduces quenching-stage CO2by 31% (22→ 15 kgCO2/lòad), while removing hot-oil vapor hazards and soilcontamination risks entirely.
• Process Gas Elimination: Transition from atmosphere carburizing (requiring continuous endothermic gas generators producing CO/CO₂) to vacuum-based Infracarb®LPC eliminates on-site combustion emissions eñtirely. The ECO furnace operates as a fully electric system with zero on-site process gas combustion and no flame hazard.

Global Scale & Market Leadership
ECM has deployed 320+ LPC production systems worldwide with 1,596 heating chambers, holding approximately 70% global market share in low-pressure carburizing. This installed base represents a massive collective carbon avoidance potential as clients transition from atmosphere to vacuum technology.
• Product-Level Carbon Reduction: ECO series furnace design achieves up to 85% reduction in CO2 emissions and 80% reduction in overall carbon footprint versus conventional heát treatment equipment. For individual client installations, verified data shows:
• 89% \mathtt { c o } _ { 2 } reduction per kg treated (atmosphere furnace → ECO/ICBP Duo)
• 81% \mathtt { c o } _ { 2 } reduction per kg treated (pusher furnace → ICBP Flex/Jumbo)
98% process gas elimination (48 L/kg → 1 L/kg), removing endothermic generator dependency
• 39% electricity reduction per treatment cycle, directly reducing Scope 2 emissions
• Operational Energy Intelligence: All ECO/ICBP systems feature ECO Mode — an automated energy management function that switches the furnace to ultra-low consumption standby during short production breaks, and allows complete weekend shutdown with rapid Monday restart. This eliminates the "always-on" energy waste inherent to atmosphere furnaces that must maintain gas generators and thérmal barriers continuously.
• • Waste & Hazard Elimination: Gas quenching replaces oil quenching, removing:
• Quenching oil waste streams and associated soil/groundwater contamination
• Post-quench washing energy consumption (40 kWh/load eliminated)
• Hot-oil vapor occupational health hazards and fire risks
• Circular Design: Modular architecture enables 90%+ recyclability at end-of-life and field replacement of heating elements, insulation, and vacuum pumps, reducing embodied carbon per unit and avoiding full-system landfill disposal.

2. PROJECT INFORMATION
Project presentation (max 150 words): Xiaomi Titans Alloy 2.0 is an industry-first innovation: a 100% post-consumer recycled aluminum alloy, and the first among Chinese brands to be massproduced for automotive integrated die-cast rear floor panels. After two years of intensive R&D Xiaomi's team overcame the core technical barriers that had prevented post-consumer recycled aluminum from being used in structural applications — iron-rich brittle phases and inclusioninduced defects — achieving performance parity with conventional primary aluminum while improving elongation.
The alloy is now deployed in Xiaomi's SU7 and YU7 electric vehicles. With a verified carbon footprint of just 1.1 \mathsf {kg C O } _ { 2 } \mathsf { e } / \mathsf {kg } approximately 93% lower than conventional primary aluminum — each vehicle saves approximately 800 kg C O _ { 2 } .At an annual production scale of 550,000 vehicles, this translates to 450,000 tons of C { \mathsf { O } } _ { 2 } avoided per year. The carbon data was independently calculated by the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and verified and certified under the International EPD®System, ensuring transparent and traceable carbon data.
2. PROJECT INFORMATION
The strengths of your project (four or five key arguments) – Max 500 words:
1. Carbon footprint approximately 93% lower than conventional primary aluminum, reaching internationally leading levels
Xiaomi Titans Alloy 2.0 achieves a carbon footprint of 1.1 kgCO₂e/kg — approximately 93% lower than conventional primary aluminum. This result was independently calculated by the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, and verified and certified under the International EPD®System, with full traceability (EPD registration number: EPD-IES-0031547:001).
| Product | Carbon Footprint(kgCO₂e/kg) | Recycled Content | Application | Data Source |

| (extrusions) |
Xiaomi Titans Alloy 2.0 is the only mass-produced automotive structural material with 100% post-consumer recycled content and an internationally leading carbon footprint. The emission reduction impact is substantial: approximately 800 kg C { \mathsf { O } } _ { 2 } saved per vehicle — equivalent to the annual carbon sequestration of 40 trees. At an annual production scale of 550,000 vehicles, this avoids approximately 450,000 tons of C O _ { 2 } per year — equivalent to the annual carbon sequestration of 20 million trees.
2. Overcame the technical barriers of 100% recycled aluminum for structural diecasting — strength uncompromised, toughness improved
Achieving 100% post-consumer recycled aluminum in automotive integrated die-cast structural components is a genuine technical breakthrough. Post-consumer aluminum scrap has complex and variable sources, inevitably introducing iron (Fe) and other harmful elements. Iron forms coarse brittle phases in the alloy matrix, compromising toughness; elevated inclusion levels cause internal casting defects, directly threatening structural safety. The core challenge: raising the recycled content in a heat-treatment-free alloy from the industry baseline of 0% to 100%, without any loss in performance.
Xiaomi's team spent two years tackling this across three technical directions:
| TechnicalDirection | Key Measures | Results |
| Advanced multi- | Five-stage cascade pretreatment (manual sorting, magnetic separation, flotation, eddy current, X-raysorting) | Harmful elementscontrolled at source |
| stage | ||
| pretreatment | ||
| High-precisionmelt treatment | Electromagnetic adsorption + three-stage high/low-temperature refining + twin-rotor degassing + high-efficiency filtration | Inclusion levels reducedto electrolytic primaryaluminum standard |

After systematic validation across multiple vehicle models and structural components — including rear floor panels and other critical load-bearing parts — Xiaomi Titans Alloy 2.0 meets all mechanical, crashworthiness, and X-ray internal quality standards required for automotive structural applications. It is now mass-produced and deployed in Xiaomi's newgeneration SU7 and YU7 electric vehicles.
3. Dual certification: China Machinery Industry Federation and the International EPD® System
Xiaomi Titans Alloy 2.0 has been independently validated by two authoritative bodies at the highest level.
The China Machinery Industry Federation convened an expert technical appraisal panel composed of materials science academicians and top industry experts. The panel assessed the technology as reaching "internationally advanced" level.
The carbon footprint was independently calculated by the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, a globally recognized authority in sustainability, and verified and certified under the International EPD® System by an independent auditor. The data is publicly registered, fully traceable, and internationally accepted
Together, these two credentials — domestic technical authority and international EPD certification — provide an exceptionally rigorous dual endorsement of both the alloy's technical performance and its low-carbon data.
4. Beyond a technical breakthrough: three strategic imperatives for industry
Enabling compliance with rising global sustainability standards. The internationally registered EPD certification provides a credible, auditable carbon data foundation for Xiaomi's future global automotive expansion, directly supporting compliance with increasingly stringent international low-carbon trade requirements — including the EU Battery Regulation and carbon border mechanisms. It also offers a replicable pathway for the broader automotive industry to meet evolving global sustainability standards.
Delivering circular economy at scale. By replacing primary aluminum with post-consumer recycled content, Xiaomi Titans Alloy 2.0 reduces dependence on imported bauxite ore and channels end-of-life societal resources into high-value circular use. This is circular economy realized in advanced manufacturing — not as a concept, but as a massproduced component.
Contributing to global climate goals. Raw material manufacturing accounts for 40–60% of a vehicle's full-lifecycle carbon footprint, with aluminum among the largest contributors. Xiaomi Titans Alloy 2.0 compresses the carbon footprint of automotive aluminum to 1/14 of primary aluminum — a concrete and scalable contribution to the Paris Agreement goals of decarbonizing industrial production.
