Your Guide
to Living in
Cambridge
with CSVPA
At CSVPA, we provide student accommodation for all
years of study allowing you to focus on the important
things; discovering Cambridge, making friends and
getting the most out of your studies. Located in
the heart of Cambridge, our halls of residence are
surrounded by a thriving arts and culture scene and with
the added benefit of living with like-minded creative
students, you will have an abundance of stimuli to inspire
your work and develop your creativity.
CAMBRIDGE
CITY CENTRE
Any student under the age of 18 at the start of their course at CSVPA must live in our halls of
residence at Varsity House. Here we have blocks dedicated to providing a safe, secure and carefully
monitored environment for our younger students.
We put a strong emphasis on pastoral care at CSVPA and all under-18 boarding is managed by our
highly trained team of professional house parents. Students from CSVPA staying at Varsity House
will have the benefit of living with fellow creative arts students from across different courses and
pathways, facilitating the forming of close friendships.
UNDER-18s ACCOMMODATION
The size, proportions and layout of each bedroom vary. The
bedroom photograph of Varsity House gives an example of what
a student room could look like when styled and decorated by the
student living there.
STANDARD ROOM IN VARSITY HOUSE
For our older students, we provide several options and we highly recommend you stay in our halls
of residence where you will benefit endlessly from the opportunity of being surrounded by other
creative art students, as well as the on-site dedicated welfare support.
We have a number of residences in central Cambridge ideally suited to our students aged over-18.
The dedicated over-18 accommodation at Varsity House and the smaller residence of Batim House
are all designed with your needs in mind. We aim to provide a safe and secure accommodation but
under more university style conditions, appropriate to our older students.

a day to maintain security, and a 24 hour

emergency.

managed by the college. It is open from 08:00

WHAT WILL MY ROOM BE LIKE?
All our rooms have single beds and an ensuite bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. The rooms
have a wardrobe, desk and desk chair, shelving unit above the desk and additional storage either
under the beds or bedside cabinets. Our rooms average 10-12 square meters in size. They are
equipped with a desk lamp or reading light and every room has its own safe.
WHEN WILL I KNOW WHERE I WILL BE LIVING?
If you applied for halls of residence before 1st August, you will be told which building you have been
assigned to before 25th August. We will not be able to confirm your room number until you arrive at
CSVPA. Upon arrival, you will be shown to your room by a member of the boarding staff.
CAN I HAVE THINGS DELIVERED IN ADVANCE?
We would recommend waiting until you arrive before ordering anything you might want in your
room. The address for your residence will be included when we let you know which building you will
be living in.
WHEN DO I NEED TO PAY FOR MY ACCOMMODATION?
Once you have paid your deposit and returned your signed registration forms, your room will be
secured and guaranteed for you. Our Finance Team will send you an invoice covering both the
tuition and accommodation fees for the year. The invoice will tell you when your fees are due.
DO I HAVE TO LIVE IN A CSVPA RESIDENCE?
If you are under 18 years of age then you will need to stay within our residences. If you are over 18
then we would like to have you stay with us, but you do not have to. If you wish to live elsewhere
then you will need to submit an Independent Accommodation request via the Admissions team so
we have the details of where you are living on file. You will need to have accommodation arranged
prior to your arrival in the UK.
IF I WANT TO LIVE IN A DIFFERENT RESIDENCE, CAN I CHANGE?
We have a number of residences in Cambridge and while we will do our best to meet any requests,
we do try to make sure that students are allocated the residence that best suits their age, gender
and course option. If you do want to request a change, please contact the boarding team in your
residence. We will only be able to accommodate changes after the start of term.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS THE RESIDENTIAL AGREEMENT?
This forms part of the offer pack you are sent during your enrolment process. By signing
the document along with the terms and conditions you are agreeing to stay within our
accommodation for the first year of your course with us.
• If you decide to move out during that year you will not be refunded any accommodation fees.
• It also means you agree to all the terms in the document and also the “House Rules”
attached with the agreement.
OUR ADVICE
You will need to sign this kind of agreement in any higher education institution in the UK. They
are legal contracts and you should take the time to read it and ask any questions you may have
before you sign anything.
CAN I CANCEL MY ACCOMMODATION BEFORE ARRIVAL?
Yes. Once we have received your deposit confirming your place you have 14 days to change
your mind without any penalty fees.
If you are over 18 and selected our accommodation during the application process, but change
your mind, you must immediately inform our Admissions team and complete the Independent
Accommodation application form which will be sent out to you. Your accommodation will be
withdrawn without penalty as long as it is within two weeks of the start of term. After that time
you will be bound to the terms of our terms and conditions and will be liable to cancellation
fees.
CAN I CANCEL MY ACCOMMODATION ONCE I HAVE ARRIVED?
Once you have arrived and taken up our accommodation it is expected you will remain in our
halls of residence for the rest of the year. If you decide to leave the accommodation, because
you would like to live somewhere else, you will need to firstly have this approved by the Rector
and you will not be entitled to a full or partial refund on your accommodation fees.
OUR ADVICE
We would strongly advise you not to sign any agreements or pay deposits until you have your
request approved by the Rector. You will be liable for accommodation fees under the terms of
the Residential Agreement so you don’t want to be paying twice.
CAN I MOVE OUT OF THE ACCOMMODATION AT ANY TIME?
Once you have arrived and taken up our accommodation it is expected you will remain in our
halls of residence for the rest of the year. If you decide to leave the accommodation, because
you would like to live somewhere else, you will need to firstly have this approved by the Rector
and you will not be entitled to a full or partial refund on your accommodation fees.
IF I NEED TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE ABOUT ACCOMMODATION WHEN I ARRIVE, WHO
DO I SEE?
We have staff in all of our residences to assist you and talk to about any issues you
may have, please speak to them as they are there to help you. If the problem cannot be
resolved then please contact Student Services by emailing studentservices@csvpa.com.
CAN I CHANGE MY CATERING PACKAGE?
Yes you can, but you need to give us a terms notice. Please liaise with our Student Services
team by emailing studentservices@csvpa.com for further guidance.
LIVING AS A STUDENT IN THE UK
One of the best part of studying in the UK is meeting new people from all over the World.
Making new friends and living with people from different cultures to yours can take some
getting used to. Most student accommodation in the UK has shared kitchens, so be
prepared for many different ways of cooking and cleaning which may be different to your
own. It is down to everyone to keep the kitchen clean and tidy up after themselves.
You should try to keep your room clean and tidy. When the cleaners come to clean, they
can only do so if the floor is clear of mess and rubbish is put in the bin to be emptied. If
you leave your room very dirty, and with any damage, you will be charged additional fees.
All student accommodation in the UK is NON-SMOKING. You will be charged if you are
found to have been smoking or vaping in your room or have tried to stop the smoke alarm
in your room, and you may be asked to leave the accommodation.
The use of recreational drugs is illegal in the UK and against CSVPA’s rules. Again, if we
have cause to suspect you are using drugs, you will be subject to college disciplinary
processes and possible exclusion from both CSVPA and the accommodation.
TOP TIPS
Save the address and telephone number of your residence in ALL your phones. It is very
helpful to show people if you get lost when you first arrive and are new to the area.
Your rooms have a good amount of storage and we also have space outside your room in
the building to store your suitcases. All our residences have free laundry facilities so think
about how much you actually need to bring with you for each term or semester. Try to only
pack what you need.
Cooking equipment is not permitted in your rooms, please do not bring it with you.
