William Bardin began manufacturing globes around 1780. His earliest globes, measuring 9 and 12 inches in diameter, were produced in collaboration with Gabriel
Wright, a mathematical instrument maker who had previously worked for eighteen years in the workshop of the renowned instrument maker Benjamin Martin. In
1790, Bardin was joined by his son, Thomas Marriott Bardin (1768–1819), who had been apprenticed to him since 1783 and had recently attained his freedom
of the City. The partnership subsequently traded as W. & T. M. Bardin. In 1794, the firm relocated to new premises in Salisbury Square, off Fleet Street. Following
William Bardin’s death, Thomas assumed sole control of the business. After his death in 1819, the firm passed in 1820 to his daughter, Elizabeth Marriott (1799–
1851). Elizabeth married in 1832, following which the business was taken over by her husband, S. S. Edkins. In 1848, their son joined the firm, which thereafter
traded as S. S. Edkins & Son.

This Tudor trencher was made especially for serving desserts. It illustrates the Old
Testament story of Susanna and the Elders. The painting derives from a contemporary
German engraving.
Sugar reached Europe in quantity for the first time in the sixteenth century, imported
from the newly established colonies in the New World. This set an extravagant trend for
banquets consisting entirely of sweet dishes. The most spectacular, such as those for
the Royal court, could run to over one hundred different desserts. These would include
sugar paste and marzipan moulded into sculptures, sometimes covered in gold leaf.
Trenchers were almost always decorated with religious scenes. They were placed on the
table painted-side uppermost and were turned over for use, the dessert being served
on the plain underside. It was felt morally important for diners to be warned of the
consequences of sinful self-indulgence and neglecting their duties to the poor.

ANTI-SLAVERY INTEREST. A RARE NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER
EARLY 19TH CENTURY
worked with coloured wools, depicting a kneeling chained slave and with an inscription ‘On africa’s
wide plains where the lions now roam..Freedom stalks forth the vast desert exploring, I was dragged
from my hut and enchained as a Slave in a dark floating dungeon up on the salt waves, spare a
halfpenny to blind negro’, within a floral border, unframed
50.5 x 67cm
Catalogue Note
A related sampler can be found in the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
Although women could not hold public office at the time, needlework provided a means of expressing
political and moral convictions. This poignant picture depicts a kneeling enslaved African man, derived
from Josiah Wedgwood’s celebrated abolitionist seal, modelled by William Hackwood in 1787. The
image was widely reproduced in abolitionist broadsides and prints, one of which likely inspired this
embroidered example. The inscription is taken from the opening verse of Desponding Negro, a poem
and song by John Collins, published in London in 1792. The work offers a striking example of the role
of women’s needlework in communicating the humanitarian ideals of the abolitionist movement.

ANTI-SLAVERY INTEREST. AN ABOLITIONIST’S SILK RETICULE OR BAG
C.1820-30
the front with a transfer printed scene of a slave in chains, with four slaves being beaten in the background,
on the reverse is an inscription ‘Thus man devotes his brother and destroys, And worse than all, and most to
be deplored, As human nature’s broadest foulest blot, Chains him and whips him and exacts his sweat, With
stripes, that Mercy, with a bleeding heart, Weeps when she sees inflicted on a beast’
25 x 24.5cm
Catalogue Note
See the V&A Museum for two similar bags produced by the Female Society of Birmingham as part of their
campaign for the abolition of slavery. The Society was founded in 1825 (originally called the Ladies Society
for the Relief of Negro Slaves) in West Bromwich, near Birmingham. The bags were made by women at
sewing circles where objects decorated with abolitionist emblems were produced to decorate their homes
and for distribution as part of their campaigning activities.

prominent advocate of liberal and abolitionist principles. The only son of the Bristol merchant and politician Edward
Protheroe senior (1774–1856), he entered Parliament as Member for Evesham in 1826, subsequently representing Bristol
and, from 1837, Halifax. Protheroe was an active supporter of parliamentary reform, religious liberalism and the abolition of
slavery. His political career was particularly closely associated with the anti-slavery cause, which featured prominently in the
contested Bristol election of 1830 and his subsequent political activities in Halifax.

Extract from ‘Japanned Papier-mâché and Tinware
c.1740-1940’, by Yvonne Jones (2012). ‘Amongst
the goods exhibited by Jennens & Bettridge at the
Birmingham Exposition of 1849, was “a new
shape of wine tray designed by Richard Redgrave
in 1847, under the auspices of Felix Summerley’s
Art Manufacturers, which the Art Union had
featured the year before. Decorated with ‘vine
and grapes’ and incorporating ‘compartments to
receive the decanters and prevent their shifting
among the glasses’, the tray was shaped to fit
comfortably round the waist when carried, and
thus provided ‘the convenience of horse-shoe
tables. Instead of the painful sight of waiters
holding trays of wine and cake at a long stretch ...
we shall now see them in a state of ease, if not an
attitude of grace.’” Richard Redgrave CB RA
(1804-1888) worked first as a designer; he was
elected to the RA in 1851. His reputation as an
artist was established in zdriving forces
behind the reform of art education in the mid
19th century. In 1847 he became art director of
the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A)
and was instrumental in establishing and securing
the future of the museum as well as designing a
new gallery. He was offered, but refused, a
knighthood in 1869.
