The difference between the two lies in the following: Big data refers to large-scale, high-speed, diverse, and high-value data sets, while AI is an intelligent technology that simulates human cognitive abilities to enable autonomous decision-making, learning, and innovation.
The AIAI-XEC pathway focuses on the theory, algorithms, and applications of AI, with employment mainly in positions such as algorithms, computer vision, and natural language processing; UDSB places more emphasis on teaching the basic theories and methods of data science, mathematics, and statistics, with career directions including data analysts and big data engineers. Although the two are complementary and intersecting (for example, AI relies on big data to train models, and data science uses machine learning to optimise analysis), the former focuses on algorithm and intelligent behaviour simulation, while the latter emphasises the mining of data value.
Their connection is primarily reflected in the following three aspects:
1. Big Data Drives the Development of AI
Big data provides crucial support for AI, allowing it to leverage machine learning and deep learning techniques to optimise algorithms automatically, enhancing the accuracy of predictions and decision-making. For example, in the medical field, AI can analyse vast amounts of healthcare data to assist in disease prediction and precise diagnosis.
2. AI Enhances the Value of Big Data
AI improves the efficiency and accuracy of big data analysis, reducing the need for manual intervention and enhancing decision-making quality. For instance,
businesses can use AI to analyse sales data, optimise market forecasting, and refine operational strategies to increase profitability.
3. Big Data and AI Mutually Reinforce Each Other, Driving Industrial Transformation
The integration of big data and AI accelerates industrial upgrades. In smart cities, AI analyses urban data to improve safety and management efficiency, while in manufacturing, intelligent production and predictive maintenance enable industry transformation and upgrading.
For specific differences and connections, please refer to the appendix.
29 What are the diferences between the AIAI-XEC pathway and the Information and Computing Science programme (ICS)?
The AIAI-XEC pathway focuses on intelligent algorithms and applications, concentrating on cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing, with employment concentrated in high-tech fields such as algorithms, computer vision, and natural language processing. The ICS cultivates general computer technology talents, covering basic fields such as information systems, software engineering, and system architecture, with employment widely matching positions such as software engineers and information system development. The AIAI-XEC pathway is more vertically in-depth in technical frontiers, while ICS tends to be more general in computer science and technology.
The AIAI-XEC pathway comprehensively carries out the Syntegrative Education model, which integrates general education, professional education, industry education,
entrepreneurship education, and management and leadership education through in-depth cooperation between XJTLU and enterprises, industries, and society, cultivating industry elites and industry leaders with an international vision who can stand on the shoulders of artificial intelligence and robots to drive future new developments.
Students will acquire solid AI expertise in deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, etc., master the application of cutting-edge technologies such as generative AI and large language models, and have the ability to solve real-world industry problems, significantly enhancing their future employability.
Compared with ICS, graduates of the AIAI-XEC pathway will additionally obtain a Certificate of Achievement from both XJTLU and UoL if the students meet the 600 hours PDP requirement.
