the horseshoe shaped mandorla with the bird headed deity Garuda supported by a pair of apsaras, on a ground of swirling flames, above a pair of Makara river dragons, who crouch on rectangular reserves enclosing standing bodhisattvas, and with wood and iron attachment to lower section.
Provenance: The two Bodhisattvas can be identified as Manjusri on the left with his lion, and Samantabhadra on the right with his elephant. They may have flanked a freestanding bronze Sakyamuni Buddha, with whom they make up a Triad

The inscription in archaic Chinese script gives manufacturing and dating information. All below a sawtooth band, and with a cloud-scroll pattern carved on the outer ring. The central knob rising within a square enclosing twelve small nipples alternately representing the Twelve Branches, the main field decorated with "TLV" patterns as well as eight nipples around the square, with different mythical beasts and birds, surrounded by an auspicious inscription, within a narrow hatched border, all within bands of dogtooth and cloud scroll around the rim. 352 A Rare Silver Dragon Ewer and Cover, early Ming dynasty
of flattened pear shape, after an Islamic metal original, decorated on each side with a peach shaped panel enclosing an incised design of a fierce three clawed dragon pursuing the flaming pearl ', and with tall curving spout, the tall loop handle issuing from a dragon mouth at the top, and attached to the domed cover by a chain.
Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Louis Fung, one of the early members of the Hong Kong Min Chiu Society, and illustrated in his catalogue My Collection' on p.109, where it is described as Song. Very closely comparable design can be seen in Yongle blue and white, most notably in the T.Y.Chao blue and white ewer , property no. 13, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong 19th May 1987, lot 228, and subsequently sold again by Sothebys Hong Kong, lot 101, 8th April 2023, which is of comparable shape and design, with a peach shaped dragon reserve enclosing a five clawed dragon on both sides. The three clawed dragon on the silver ewer may point to a slightly earlier dating in the Yuan.

the jar features a flared double-rimmed mouth, very likely designed for functional purposes like sealing, the jar of shouldered form with a tapering foot, with four evenly spaced lugs applied to the shoulder, and olive-green glaze applied to the upper section from the waist, the lower section remaining unglazed, revealing a greyish stoneware body.

the globular body rising from a slightly flared foot to a short neck, incised with a narrow groove at the neck and shoulder, applied with three and four double-stranded loop handles, covered with a transparent white glaze toned slightly olive from firing stopping irregularly at the widest part of the belly to expose the fine buff body beneath.

elegantly potted, the slightly splayed foot swelling to high, rounded shoulders surmounted by a tall waisted neck moulded with three raised rings and an everted galleried rim, surmounted by two curved double-strap handles applied with five studded bosses, terminating in dragon-head terminals biting the rim, covered overall with a finely crackled translucent glaze of pale tint stopping evenly above the base to reveal the fine white body.

the powerfully modelled animal standing foursquare on a rectangular base, its wellformed head with ears pricked back, eyes bulging, nostrils flared and lips apart to bare its teeth, covered with a streaky brown glaze stopping short of the hooves and base, the saddle also unglazed, the saddle cloth and blanket splashed in a darker chestnut.

the ovoid body rising from a straight foot to a wide neck, the grey stoneware body covered with a creamy-white slip and a dark chocolate-brown overslip, cut to the body with a roulette forming bands of short oblique strokes in close-packed rows, the exterior applied with a clear glaze and the interior with a brown glaze, the domed cover similarly decorated; It is uncommon to find rouletted jars preserved with a cover, although one was included in the exhibition Charm of Black and White Ware. Transition of Cizhou Type Wares, Osaka Municipal Museum of Art, Osaka, 2002, cat. no. 56; and another in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is illustrated in The World's Great Collections. Oriental Ceramics, vol. 10, Tokyo, 1980, col. pl. 82. Wares decorated in this way were made in kilns in Henan province, such as the Dangyangyu kilns where fragments of wares of this type have been unearthed; see the fragment of a similar cover illustrated in Series of China Ancient Porcelain Kiln Sites. An identical one sold at Sotheby's London from the Tsuneichi Inoue Collection at 13 May 2015, Lot 30, for 27,500.

the tapering body carved through creamy-white slip with two broad bands of peony, all under a clear glaze except for the unglazed yellowish base; A comparable Cizhou meiping dated to the 11th-12th century of larger size carved through a cream-colored glaze to a pale grey ground was gifted by Mrs.
Samuel T. Peters in 1926 to The Metropolitan Museum (acc. no. 26.292.56). The Metropolitan Museum vase is carved with a broad central scroll band with leaves similarly rendered to those on the present vase but lacking the large peony blossoms.
