Architecture
A nod to the ineffability of ancient Athens Edwin Heathcote hymns the ground level work of Dimitris pakimark around the cn
f you have been to the Acropolisa
ndclimbed those winding patths up t he hill towards the Parthenon you w ill have walked upon the work of Dimit ris pikionis Probably, you will not hav e noticed it at aii.Yet his work on co n structing that complexnet work of pa thsand a few modest building saround t he back is among the most influen-tial and enduring contributions to 20th-cen tury architecture. If you cast your eye s down wards, you will see a carefullyc onstructed foot way built from the rui ns ofan A thens that was beingdemolis hedas the path was being laid. This pat chwork of stones.frag ments and spoli a(pieces mined from there mains of old er buildings)is almost likea layer of fossils of past architecture recon-sti tutedto createa kind of puzzle. It is aremarkableandbeautiful thing, ameti culous treatment ofa surface destined to remainunder foot and the creation o f public spacefrom a once-dusty hillsi de.Born in Piraeus.
Pikionis (1887-1968) didnot have af ormal architectural education. He began bystudying civil engineering in Athen sand then art and sculpture at the Eco le desBeaux-Arts in Paris. There he bec ame close tothe Greek-born Giorgio deC hirico, and a traceof the surreal conti nued to haunt his work.Moving back toG reece after his studies,he designed an umber of humble dwellings and a few la rger blocks in styles that ranged from a kind of rough modern yernacular toa pure, white modernism.Little survives f rom thisperiod except drawings and fuz zyphotos.Fora time after the Second W orldWar his work consisted mostly oft ombstones. In parallel, though,Pikionise njoyeda37-yearcareeratAthensPoly technic as an influential tescher.Beca use he communicated his ideas throughI ectures rather thanwriting, his legacy hasfadeda littleand has led to somec onfusionabout the intent of his work,a bout where-orif-he slots into the mod ernist canon. The project that Pikionis is now bestknown for.
thelandscaping of the Acropo-lis,came about in 1951 when KonstantinosKaraman lis, minister for public works (laterpr ime minister and then president),invit edhim to join commission on improving pub-lic space around the site. For Piki onis thiswas an almost sacred commissi on.Perhapsunusually for an architect w ithamodernistbackground,he considere d ita work of artisticintervention.Th e brief was to improve publicaccess to the site. But the wider goal was tohelp tore-establish Greece, which had beend evastated by the Second World War and acivil war that lasted until 1949,as a cultural and tourist destination.Pikio nis barely movedbeyond the ground plan e.It is an incrediblework in there dim ensions, with the verticaldimension bei ng mostly in the depth andrange of the paving stones. The wars had left their ruins and Ath-ens,a mainly Ottoman and 19th-century city, was beingremade. The Greekvernacularofthewhitecubeconv ergedwith the stripped, plain wallsof modernism as a complex col-lage city s prang up.The new Athens left awealth o f detail and material in its wake, frag -ments of 19th-century villas, many bui lt byarchitects(often German,Danish or French) attempting to emulate the hist oric detail of the Hellenic legacy but also more mundane pieces of weathered marble floor, cobbles, hearths,
thresholds, pavers, conduits, slabs,s teps andslices through columns which a ppear as slen-der discs.Pikionis team meticulously laidout every path and pl atform,accommodat-ing the rocks which swelled from the ground and winding ar ound the steeper hillsidea to maintain amanageable gradient. The result is se ductive but never insistent.Occasional ly it looks like modernist whimsy,a li ttle evocation of something that might be happening in Milan(Gio Ponti or For nasetti, perhaps),a sun witha face and rays,a patch-work geometry like thoses ofthe Milaneseapartment block lobbies Atothertimes,if youdrawback, thesto nes evoke an urbanplan, acity of ruins laid out in the earth.Occasionally you recognise a little bit of detail:a cor nice or a frieze,a piece of column, eac hafragment of an earlier evocation o f ancient Greece.Occa-sionally therea re concrete insertions, long strips wit hsudden bends and loops, like the line s in print by Eduardo Chillida. And,atp oints, the landscape rises up,like ruin sofa base of a wall,to provide seati ng for the tired, overheated walker. The re are moments of more conventionsal a rchitecture, too. There isa pavilion,as olid stong base witha timber structur e that looks more Japanese than Greek, anda series of spaces roofed but most lyopen to the air on either side, elev atedabovetheearthandshadedbytre es.They are among the most beautiful m odern buildings you might ever encount er,yet there is nothing really that lo oks modern about them.A small church,S t Demetrios Loumbardiaris,is part 16th cen-tury,part Pikionis concotion,an ex trusion of the stone patchwork into th ree dimensions. It looks like it mightb eathousand years old,as if it mighto nce have been a bathhouse or a mosque.
