Context
Biodegradable
Products disposed of at the end of their usable life can negatively impact
the environment in water and landfill. Polyester, predominant in
activewear, can take 50 years to biodegrade, so interest in decomposable
fibres is high. Benefits: Biodegradable fibres have the ability to decompose in the right
conditions, in as little as three months. They can also help combat
microfibre pollution by dissolving in water when they shed through
washing. Scalability: Some biodegradable developments are in the market, some
are still at pilot stage. Start-up innovator Mango Materials, which
created a wastewater process for fully biodegradable polyester, joined
Fashion For Good’s Scaling Programme in 2018 to accelerate its
progress. It currently has one pilot and is looking for partners to scale
production.Active textile industry leaders such as Schoeller and Singtex
have brought biodegradeable finishes to outdoorwear, and brand
leaders such as Vollebak and Patagonia have launched game-changing
biodegradable garments to market. WGSN
