condition may be available on request. The absence of condition reports in the

catalogue does not imply that the lot is free from imperfections or faults

COLLECTION OF LOTS

We are pleased to offer two weeks (10 working days) free storage for all lots

purchased from this sale. However, owing to a busy sale schedule, all lots not

collected by 4pm on the Thursday 17th October 2024 will be transferred to

Sackville­West Moving & Storing in Andover, where they will be available for

collection from Tuesday 22nd October 2024. Lots will be unavailable for

collection on the 18th and 21st October as the items will be in transit.

Please note, handling and storage charges will be applied from 8am on Tuesday

22nd October 2024.

Following in the footsteps of recent single owner and country house collections, such as Upper Slaughter Manor,

Exbury House: Le Gout Rothschild and Parker & Morris: The Art of Decorating, we are proud to offer for sale the

contents of The Grange, Wendover, Buckinghamshire. The sale comprises almost 500 lots of fine English and

Continental furniture, Old Master paintings, sculpture, lighting, collectable objets d’art and garden statuary. The collection

was formed over the last fifty years and artfully graced The Grange, a splendid Grade II listed house dating back to the

early 17th century which incorporates an elegant Georgian wing with many period features.

The Grange, Wendover has a fascinating history especially as it was owned from 1789 to 1794 by John Barker Church

(1748-1818). Barker Church was an English born businessman and the supplier of the Continental Army during the

American Revolutionary War. He was one of the few American revolutionaries to sit in the English parliament. His

brother-in-law was Alexander Hamilton the influential founding father of the United States. Hamilton and Church were

not only business partners but also friends having married sisters. Hamilton went on to have a love affair with Church’s

wife Angelica Schuyler. She is featured in the popular musical ‘Hamilton’ by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Church is referred

to as her ‘wealthy husband’.

The 1845 London Post Office Directory listed William & Charles

Wilkinson at 14 Ludgate Hill, the firm described as designers &

manufacturers. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851,

spring mattress etc., mahogany wardrobe veneered with walnut

and pedestal dressing table.

Francis Watkins (c.1723 ­ c.1784) was a leading instrument maker of the

second half of the 18th Century and founded a business which continued until

1856. His shop was at Sir Isaac Newton’s Head, 415 Charing Cross and from

1747­84, 5 Charing Cross. A very similar barometer at Colonial Williamsburg,

Virginia, USA is illustrated in Nicholas Goodison, English Barometers 1680­1860,

p.250., pl. 153. Another, from the Mulliner Collection is illustrated in Ralph

Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, vol. 1, p.33, fig.21.
