beamsplitters, wedge beamsplitters, etc. At the same time, our company can provide the coating
of beamsplitters for their special applications and the production of beamsplitters of different sizes
and shapes according to the different needs of customers.
Introduction to Common Beamsplitters:
The beam splitting element is used to divide the incident beam into two beams of transmission
and reflection according to a certain proportion, so as to meet the needs of practical applications.
Commonly used are mainly plate beamsplitters and cube beamsplitters. Depending on the
coating, the ratio of transflective light and the polarization state can be controlled.
Generally, cube beamsplitters are divided into three types according to the different requirements
for the polarization state of transmitted light and reflected light in the application:
Cube beamsplitters(energy splitting):The main focus is on the proportional beam splitting of
the total energy of the incident light (the beam splitting coating has almost no absorption). The
polarization state of the outgoing light is not a design consideration. Therefore, if there is a higher
requirement for the polarization state of the outgoing light, it is not recommended to use it.
Polarizing cube Beamsplitter:The transmitted light and reflected light are linearly polarized light,
respectively, and the degree of separation of the S light and the P light is defined by the extinction
ratio (Tp/Ts).
Non-polarizing cube Beamsplitter:Different from the energy splitting type. The non-polarizing cube
beamsplitter divides the incident light into a transmitted beam and a reflected beam according to
the calibrated splitting ratio without changing the polarization state of the incident light. It should
be noted that the non-polarizing cube beamsplitter uses a metal induced beam splitter film, so
it has a certain absorption of the incident light (usually <10%), which should be paid attention to
when the laser power is large.
The front surface of the plate beamsplitters is coated with a beam splitter, and the rear surface is
usually coated with an anti-reflection coating to reduce back reflection, thereby reducing ghost
images and interference effects between beams.Compared with the cube beamsplitters, the plate
beamsplitter has the advantages of moderate price, light weight of the element, and relatively
easy fabrication of large-sized elements. The influence of the reflected light on the rear surface
(which can be reduced by coating or using a wedge window), the beam translation generated
after the light passes through the palte beamsplitter, and the optical path difference between
the transmitted light and the reflected light, etc., are the aspects to be aware of when using plate
beamsplitter.

Constructed by cementing two right angle prisms together, Our these Unpolarized Cube
Beamsplitters offer a range of reflection/transmission ratios. A splitter coating is applied to the
hypotenuse surface of one of the prisms to provide the designated reflection/transmission ratio.
Absorption loss to the coating is almost Zero. Please keep in mind that the output is partially
polarized, making such Cube Beamsplitters suitable for illumination and other applications where
polarization is not a concern. If polarization sensitivity is critical to your application, we recommend

Polarizing Cube Beamsplitters
Designed for broadband applications. Our Broadband Polarizing Cube Beamsplitters offer a
transmission of greater than 90% for P-polarized light and a reflection efficiency of greater
than 99% for S-Polarized light across the entire design wavelength range. Each beamsplitter
consists of a pair of precision high tolerance right angle prisms cemented together with a
dielectric coating on the hypotenuse of one of the prisms. An anti-reflection (AR) coating has
been applied to each face of the beamsplitter to achieve less than 0.5% reflection per surface.
Our PBS features absolute 1000:1 extiction rate in the full wavelength range. Please keep in
mind that using the prism with dot as the input one.

Our Broadband Non-Polarizing Cube Beamsplitters consist of a pair of precision high tolerance right
angle prisms cemented together with a hybrid dielectric coating on the hypotenuse of one of the prisms
(the dotted one). The low polarization dependence of the metallic dielectric hybrid coating allows
the transmission and reflection of S- and P-polarization states to be within 10% of each other. These
beamsplitters are spectrally flat across their specified wavelength ranges, reducing effects caused by
changes in the angle of incidence or converging/diverging beams.Please keep in mind that using the
prism with dot as the input one, and because of the absorption due to the hybrid coating, only suitable

Diffraction Gratings
Standard gratings for laser applications include high damage threshold original and
replica gratings for molecular lasers, holographic grazing incidence gratings for dye lasers,
and echelle gratings. The latest additions to our diffraction gratings include transmission
gratings and reflection/transmission \"Polka-dot\" beam splitters.
Golden Way Scientific can offer a broad selection of diffraction gratings for a variety

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanoimaging is optimized for diffraction gratings.
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) can be used during the fabrication of gratings to understand what causes differences in grating
performance. When producing new master gratings, AFM is often used to accurately determine the size, shape, and angle of grating
grooves. When scribing with a diamond knife or using a holographic method to make a new master grating, inspection with highresolution imaging tools can confirm whether the shape and texture of the microscopic grooves are optimized and meet the design
requirements. Below are two diffraction grating scan images provided by us. Image 1 is a holographically recorded 1200 Lines/mm UV
blazed grating. Note the high-definition grooved profile obtained and confirmed by AFM. Image 2 is a sinusoidal groove profile of a
2180 Lines/mm holographic recording diffraction grating.
Diffraction efficiency and dynamic range are critical parameters in many spectroscopic instrument designs. Understanding why a
particular diffraction grating may have a small but inevitable performance difference is important to the success of instrument design.
Usually, many diffraction gratings simply describe their original fabrication method, scribe frequency and blaze wavelength (such as
the scribed gratings with 600 scribe lines per millimeter and 400nm blaze wavelength usually marked on the market). However, not
all scribed 600-lines/mm blazed 400nm gratings are the same. Likewise, the \"master grating\" used to replicate the grating can vary in
performance due to anomalies in the size, shape or location of the grooved surfaces. As shown in the diffraction efficiency curves of
two different master gratings at 600 lines per mm and 400nm blazed wavelengths below, these nanoscale differences can significantly
affect grating performance over a narrow or wide spectral range.
Standard gratings for spectroscopic applications include both
ruled and holographic reproductions.

Diffraction Grating Background and Technology:
A grating is an optical device composed of a series of equidistant parallel lines on a substrate coated with a reflective film.
The distance between adjacent grating lines and the angle of the grating lines relative to the substrate can affect the dispersion and
efficiency of the grating. If the incident wavelength is much larger than the spacing of the grating lines, diffraction will not occur. If the
incident wavelength is much smaller than the spacing between the grating lines, the grating facets can only reflect the incident light,
and diffraction does not occur.
Gratings can be divided into two basic types, holographic gratings and scribed gratings, according to how the grating lines are
formed. The ruling grating is engraved on the reflective surface by a diamond-tipped scoring machine. Gratings produced by laser
formation of interference fringes and photolithographic processes are called interference or holographic gratings.

For a specific diffraction order (N) and incident angle (i), different wavelengths (λ) have
different diffraction angles (i'), and the grating separates the incident composite light
by different wavelengths.
Grating scribing process:
The initial step in making a master or master grating is the choice of substrate material, usually glass or copper. The base material is
polished to a high flatness and coated with a thin layer of aluminum. The parallelism of the scribes and the equidistance of the scribe
lines take a long time to adjust, and can take days to set up and test before actually scribing. The ruling engine must be able to make
the diamond tip return on a precise path after each scribe and the substrate is scribed by a predetermined amount. The parallelism
and displacement of the scribe lines must be precisely controlled. A series of tests are required for the scribe, to check the efficiency
of the grating, the shape of the scribe and the stray light. After each test, a small mechanical adjustment may be required. Repeated
testing may take a week or more to optimize the shape of the scribe for specific optical properties. The original grating can only be
scribed on a large substrate after thorough testing. Original gratings were very expensive, so until replica gratings were developed,
gratings were of limited use.
Holographic grating fabrication
Similar to scribed gratings, the first step in the production of holographic gratings is to select a suitable substrate. Unlike the ruled
grating, which is coated with a reflective film, the holographic grating substrate is coated with a photosensitive material. The substrate
coated with the photosensitive material is placed between the intersecting beams of monochromatic light and coherent beams
generated by the laser, so that the photosensitive material is sensitized. The intersecting laser beams produce a series of parallel
and equidistant interference fringes whose intensity varies in a sinusoidal shape. The interference fringes show the difference in the
photosensitive material. Since the solubility of the photosensitive material is determined by the light intensity irradiated to it, the
interference fringes show different light intensities on the surface of the photosensitive material. The substrate can then be reflectively
coated and then used for replication using the same process as the original scribed grating. Since holographic gratings are produced
by optical methods, the shape of the scribe lines and the spacing of the scribe lines are exactly the same. Therefore, the holographic
grating has no periodic and random spacing errors, and there is no \"ghost line\" and stray light scribed in the grating. As a result,
holographic gratings generate far less stray light than ruled gratings.
Diffraction efficiency:
The main factors affecting the grating efficiency are: the shape of the scribe line, the angle of incidence and the reflectivity of the film.
The absolute efficiency of a grating is the percentage of incident monochromatic light diffracted to a certain diffraction
order. In contrast, relative efficiency is the ratio of the energy diffracted into a diffraction order to the energy diffracted into a flat mirror
with the same coating as the grating. It is important to keep this in mind when comparing the performance curves of gratings. Relative
efficiency curves tend to show higher efficiencies than absolute efficiency curves for the same grating. The efficiency curves involved in
this paper are absolute efficiency data.
The angle of incidence has an effect on the grating performance. Since there can be an infinite number of grating structures, a standard
geometry can be used for grating calculations. This is the Littrow (or self-collimating) structure. In this collimated configuration, the
diffracted orders and wavelengths of interest can be directly backtracked (i=i') along the path of the incident light. The blaze angle of
the ruled grating is calculated based on this structure. This structure is practical and necessary for laser tuning applications, but most
applications require some offset between the incident and diffracted beams. Aside from having an effect on the maximum responsive
wavelength, small shifts in the Littrow structure rarely have a substantial effect on grating performance. Unless otherwise stated, all
performance curves in this document are first order diffraction data in Littrow structures.
Blaze angle and Blaze wavelength:
Ruled grating grooves are zigzags with one side longer than the other. The angle between the long side of the groove and the grating
plane is the blaze angle. Changing the blaze angle can direct the diffracted light to a specific region of the spectrum, increasing the
efficiency of the grating in that region. The wavelength with the highest diffraction efficiency is the blaze wavelength.
Holographic gratings are generally less efficient than ruled gratings because holographic gratings are not prone
to blaze in the usual sense. In some cases, a change in the sinusoidal shape of a holographic grating can bring it

close to the efficiency of ruled grating. Some special cases need to be noted, for example, when the ratio of groove pitch to wavelength
is close to 1, the efficiency of sinusoidal grating is almost the same as that of ruled grating. A 1800-lines/mm holographic grating has
the same efficiency as a ruled grating at 500nm blazed wavelength. In addition, we use a special process that enables the holographic
grating to obtain a true sawtooth effect with a blaze wavelength of 250nm, which is ideal for UV applications requiring high efficiency
and low stray light.
Resolving power:
The resolving power of the grating depends on the diffraction order of the grating and the number of grating lines within the radiation
range of the incident light. It can also be reflected by the width of the grating, the spacing of the scribe lines and the diffraction angle.
The \"theoretical resolving power\" of a diffraction grating with N lines is:
The actual resolving power of a grating depends on its scribing accuracy. The accuracy can reach 80~90% of the theoretical value,
which can be called high-quality scribing. The resolving power is a performance parameter of the grating. Resolving power is not the
same as resolution, which depends on the optical and mechanical properties of the system at work.
System resolution:
The resolution of an optical system is often determined by the ability to measure or discriminate the nearest adjacent absorption and
radiation lines according to the Rayleigh criterion (R=λ/ ∆λ). It depends not only on the resolving power of the grating, but also on the
focal length, slit size, f-number and surface finish of all elements and collimation of the system. The resolution of an optical system is
usually lower than the resolving power of the grating.
Dispersion:
The angular dispersion of the grating is determined by the angle of incidence and the spacing between adjacent scribe lines. The
angular dispersion can be increased by increasing the angle of incidence or decreasing the spacing between adjacent scribe lines. In a
compact optical system, good resolution can be obtained using gratings with large angular astigmatism. The
angular dispersion is the slope of the curve λ = f(i). In an autocollimator, the dispersion equation is:
This formula can be used to determine the angle at which two spectral lines in the grating separate or the bandwidth at a given angle.
Diffraction order:
For a given angle (i,i') and groove spacing, different wavelengths can cause several orders
of diffracted light according to the grating equation. When the incident light is delayed
by an integer multiple of the same phase, the diffraction between adjacent grooves will
be enhanced. The generation of diffraction orders is limited by the groove space and the
angle of incidence, which obviously cannot exceed 90° . Higher order diffraction decreases
with increasing angular dispersion. Correct use of light sources, detectors and filters can
compensate for order overlap, which is not the main reason for using low-order gratings.
Free spectral range:
The free spectral range is the maximum spectral bandwidth that can be obtained for a
particular diffraction order without spectral overlap between adjacent diffraction orders.
The free spectral range increases as the groove pitch decreases. The higher the diffraction
order, the smaller the free spectral range. If λ1 and λ2 are the lower and upper limits,
respectively, then the free spectral range = λ2 - λ1 = λ1/n.
Ghost lines and stray light:
Definition of ghost lines: False spectral lines due to periodic errors in groove spacing. The interference-controlled ruling engine
reduces ghost lines, while the holographic process eliminates ghost lines. The stray light source of the ruled grating is due to random
errors and irregularities of the reflective surface. The stray light generated by holographic gratings is very small, because the process
of holographic gratings using coherent light beams to generate interference fringes on photosensitive materials is not affected by
mechanical irregularities and inconsistencies.
Replication process:
In the late 1840s, White and Frazer developed sophisticated replication processes
that allowed the mass production of replicated gratings (including ruled grating
and holographic gratings) from a master grating. It is a process in which the threedimensional structure of a master grating is transferred to another substrate,
allowing the master grating to be fully replicated with extremely small tolerances.
This process enabled the commercialization of gratings and their widespread use
in the spectrometer industry.

Coating:
Aluminum films are used for UV, visible and IR grating replication processes. Because
aluminum has stronger oxidation resistance and reflectivity to ultraviolet light
than silver. Except for the reflectivity of about 85% at 750~900nm, the reflectivity
of aluminum exceeds 90% in the range from 200nm to the far infrared. If maximum
reflectivity is required in the NIR, or for fiber optic applications, the aluminum layer is
re-plated with gold. Although gold is very soft, gold has high oxidation resistance, and
its reflectivity in the near-infrared wavelength band exceeds 96%, and the reflectivity
in the wavelength band above 2 microns exceeds 98%. Below 600nm, the reflectivity
of gold drops significantly, so it is not recommended for visible and ultraviolet
wavelengths.
Dielectric protective coatings such as Al+MgF2 can protect the aluminum film from
oxidation and maintain the high reflectivity of aluminum in the visible and ultraviolet
wavelengths. If gold protective coating and Al+MgF2 dielectric protective layer are
required, please specify when ordering. While a gold protective coating can improve reflectivity, any protective coating will lower the
damage threshold by more than two times.
Selecting a grating:Selecting a standard grating requires consideration of several variables related to the grating application.
Efficiency:In general, ruled gratings are more efficient than holographic gratings. For example, fluorescence excitation and other
radiation-induced applications can use a ruled grating (see the efficiency comparison of the two gratings). From experience, at 2/3 and
3/2 of the blaze wavelength, the first-order efficiency of the ruled grating drops by 50%.
Blaze Wavelength:A ruled grating has a relatively sharp peak near its blaze wavelength due to its sawtooth groove profile,
while a holographic grating has a flatter spectral response. Therefore, applications centered on a narrow band range benefit more from
the blaze of the ruled grating in this band.
Wavelength Range:The spectral range covered by the grating is determined by the spacing of its scribe lines. A ruled grating
and a holographic grating with the same grating constant have the same spectral range. The maximum wavelength that the grating can
diffract is equal to 2 times the period of the grating, and the maximum diffraction wavelength can be obtained when the incident light
and diffracted light are at 90 degrees to the grating normal.
Stray Light:For applications such as Raman spectroscopy, the signal-to-noise ratio is critical. Holographic gratings can be chosen
for their low stray light advantage.
Resolving power:There is no difference in resolving power between holographic and scribed gratings with exactly the same
spacing between adjacent scribe lines. The line density of the holographic grating can reach 3600 lines/mm, while the line density of
the holographic grating will not exceed 1200 lines/mm.
Touch grating:
Standard gratings are coated with aluminum or gold and require extreme care when touching. Only its edges are allowed to be
touched. Fingerprints and various aerosols can damage the grating coating. Minor scratches or surface imperfections usually do not
affect its optical performance. For grating cleaning, please consult first.
Orientation of the rectangle/scribed line:
Unless otherwise stated, small size gratings are obtained by cutting rectangular gratings along lines parallel to the grooves. In stock
standard products, the parallelism of the reticle to the grating edge is ±0.5°.
Damage Threshold:(The grating with the metal film layer and the protective film has no minimum damage threshold).
