BHMAA156.13-2005-Mortiselock
1. SCOPE
1.1This Standard establishes requirements for Mortise Locks and Latchesand includes operational tests,security tests,cycle tests,finish tests,material evaluation tests and dimensional criteria.
1.2Tests described in this Standard are performed under laboratory conditions.In actual usage,results may vary because of installation,maintenance,and environmental conditions.
1.3When mortise locks and latches are used in fire door assemblies,they shall have been tested and listed for use in fire doors byaNationally Recognized IndependentTestingLaboratory(NRTL)and shall be under an in-plant follow-up inspection service.
1.4Grade Qualifications (Also see Appendix A)
1.4.1Two classifications of Grades are described in this Standard.Manufacturers shall indicate separately,for bothan Operational Grade and a Security Grade level of mortise locks and latches.The minimum acceptable grade level for Operational and Security grades shall be a grade 3.
1.4.1.1 Operational Grades shall meet the requirements of Sections 9,11,12 and 13.
1.4.1.2 Security Grades shall meet the requirements of Section 10.
1.4.2Any function shall be tested for qualification under Operational Grades and all other functions shall be considered as meeting the criteria provided the lock case and operating partsare of the same construction as that of the lock previously tested.
1.4.3Function F21 or a similar function with dead bolts and function FO4ora similar function withoutdead bolts to be certified shall be tested with the trim for qualification under Security Grades.All other functions where access is prevented shall be considered as meeting the criteria provided the lock case and operating parts are of the same construction as that of the lock previously tested.
2. DEFINITIONS
2.1Backset The distance from the edge of the door measured at the centerline of the door thickness to the centerline of the cylinder or spindle.
2.2 Bolts
2.2.1Auxiliary Dead LatchA lock component which,when actuated,automatically locks a projected latch bolt against return by end pressure.
2.2.2Dead Bolt A lock component which protrudes from,or is withdrawn into the lock front by action of the lock mechanism.When the door is closed and the dead bolt is thrown,it extends into a hole provided in the strike,locking the door and does not return with end pressure.
2.2.3Latch Bolt A lock component having a beveled end which projects from the lock front in its extended position,but is forced back into the lock case by end pressure or drawn back byaction of the lock mechanism.When the door isclosed,the latch bolt projects into a hole provided in the strike, holding the door in a closed position.
2.3Cylinder The subassembly of a lock containing a plug with a keyway and cylinder body with a tumblermechanism.
2.3.1Cylinder Body The portion of a cylinder that surrounds the plug and contains the tumbler mechanism.
2.3.2Cylinder Plug A component of the cylinder within the body which is actuated when the correct key is inserted.
2.3.3Cylinder Housing The portion of a lock that surrounds and retains the cylinder body.It is often part of a lock case. 2.3.4Interchangeable Core Acylinder that is removed from the lock with a designated key. 2.3.5Cylinder Guard Material surrounding the otherwise exposed portion of a cylinder to protect the cylinder from wrenching,cutting,pulling or prying. 2.4Display Key A key for guest rooms used as sample rooms or when extra security is required.This key locks a single guest room against other keys except emergency or shutout key. 2.5 Emergency Key A key that operates all guest room locks even when locked from the inside. 2.6Emergency Release The component of a privacy,bedroom or bath lock receiving a blank key or other device which when actuated enables entry from the outside. 2.7Indicator Button The component of a hotel guest room lock which indicates on the outside that the dead bolt has been projected. 2.8 Lock Front A plate fastened to the edge of the door through which the bolts pass. 2.9Loiding Insertion of apiece of shim material between the door and jamb at the latch bolt location to attempt forcible retraction of the latch bolt. 2.10 Mortise Lock orLatch A lock or latch fiting into a mortised cavity prepared in the edge of a door. The bolts (see 2.2)are operated by knobs,levers,turns,thumb pieces,paddles or cylinders engaging the mortise lock or latch through holes prepared in the faces of the door. 2.11 Push Button Mechanism A mechanical mechanism used in place of a key and cylinder. 2.12Recessed CylinderAcylinder where the cylinder head is flush with,or recessed below,the outside surface of the trim to protect the cylinder from wrenching,cuting,pulling or prying. 2.13 Strike A mortised or surface mounted plate fastened to the door frame into which the bolts project. 2.14 Strike Box A housing used in back of a strike to enclose the bolt or bolt openings. 2.15 Thumb Piece A lever projecting from a handle pressed by the thumb to retract a latch bolt. 2.16 Turn The component that projects or retracts a dead bolt or latch bolt by turning.Sometimes called a turn piece. 3. GENERAL 3.1Cylinders Cylinders used in Mortise Locks shall meet the performance requirements for cylinder types found in ANSI/BHMA A156.5-2001-2001 for Auxiliary Locks and Associated Products.
3.1.1Other Mechanisms are permited to be used in lieuof cylinders providing the performance and security criteriaare equivalent to thatofcylinders.
3.2Tolerances Where only minus tolerances are given,the dimensions are permitted to be exceeded at the option of the manufacturer.
3.3Door Preparation Mortise Locks and Latches shall fit the door edge and frame preparation as specified in ANSI/DHIA115.1-1990 for Steel Doors andFrames and A115.W1-1988(R1995) for Wood Doors.
BHMAA156.13-2005-Mortiselock
11. CYCLETESTS
Three locks shallbe tested and a failure of one in any test shallconstitute a failure of the cycle test.
11.1 The locks shall meet the requirements of 9.1 through 9.7and shall be installed in a mechanically operated test door (paragraph 8.4.2).The test door shall have a 10 lbf ( 4 4 ~ { N } ) load at 30 in.( 7 6 0 ~ {mm } ) ± 1 / 1 6 in. ( 1 . 6 {mm } ) from its hinge point or equivalent moment loading the door against its stop.
11.2 Locks with knobs that operate in both directions shall be operated in a clockwise direction for 100,000 cycles and in a counterclockwise direction for the next 1Oo,ooO cycles alternatelyuntil the total requirement of paragraph 11.4 has been met.Locks with levers or unidirectional knobs shallbe operated in one direction only.Test entry handle sets using the cycle mount test fixture for entry handle sets (see figure1l).The test door shall be operated atarate not to exceed 3O cycles per minute for levers or knobs and a rate not to exceed 10 cycles per minute for locks with thumb pieces.Locks with levers shall be operated at 2 in.( 5 1 ~ {mm } minimum from the lever spindle in the direction of door opening.
11.3Locks with paddles are permitted to be tested from either the push or the pull side for the entire test. Test locks with paddles usingcycle mount test fixture for paddles,see figure 12.The fixture shall be operated at a rate of30 cycles per minute maximum.

DHFBest practice guide: Mechanically operated locks,latchesand locking platesto BSEN12209
Digit 1 Category of use
Three categories of use are identified: - grade 1: low frequency of use by people with a high incentive to exercise care and a small chance of misuse, e.g. internal residential doors - grade 2: medium frequency of use by people with some incentive toexercisecare butwhere thereis some chance of misuse,e.g.internal ofice doors - grade 3: high frequency of use by public or others with little incentive to exercise care and with a high chance of misuse, e.g. public doors
Digit 2 Durability
Twelve grades are identified with minimum figures for deadbolt and snib operation,and latch bolt operation with and without side load,as shown. The side load is applied to the latch bolt when it is being withdrawn
Digit3
Doormassand closing force
Nine grades are identified with maximum figures for closing forceatvariousdoormassesasshown. Note:closing force is froma standing_start:i.e. fully extended latch bolt in contact with striking plate at start of test

-grade O:not approved for use on fire/smoke door assemblies - grade 1: suitable for use on fire/smoke door assemblies tested to EN1634-1 etc. Note1.A grade1 classificationmeans only that the lock has been designed for use on fire/smoke control doors; the actual fire performance achieved (e.g.fire integrity of 30 minutes on a partially glazed timber door etc.) wil be contained in a separate fire test report.
Note 2.Where a product is intended for fire/smoke door use (i.e. a " 1 " in box 4), it must be possible to demonstrate compliance with the Essential Requirements of the Construction Products (Amendments) Regulations. It is recommended that the product should bear the CE mark (see section on CE marking).
Digit 5 Safety
No requirement, but note: a lock or latch conforming to this standard can,at the same time,also be part of an exit device conforming to EN179 or EN1125.
Digit 6
Corrosion resistance
Eight grades are identified with neutral salt-spray (NSS) corrosion resistance grades from EN1670:1998,with and without temperature resistance as shown:-
| Corrosion resistance | Temperature resistance | |
| (NSS) | No requirement | -20C to +80°C |
| 240 hours | grade D | grade G |

Digit 8
Field of door application
Fifteen gradesare identified for differing applicationshinged or sliding doors with rim or mortice locks with eitherkeyless egress from inside or key locking from bothsides.The grading determineswhich application is appropriate. Inaddition, there isa requirement that lock/latch should notbe removable fromoutside or, for gradesK to R, from insideusing"standard" tools. Grades H and P require support for the lockcase when installed.
BS EN 12209 Lock
ryoe9 Ty pe of key operation and locking
Nine gradesare identified for differing types of key
operation (see table).The grading determines how the
lock is assessed for deadlocking requirement as shown.
In addition,there is a maximum key torque operating
requirement of 1.5 Nm and a minimum key strength
requirement of 2 . 5 N m (20
grade O:Not applicable;
grade A: cylinder lock or latch; manually locking;
grade B: cylinder lock or latch; automatically locking;
grade C: cylinder lock or latch; manually locking with intermediate locking;
grade F: lever lock or latch; manually locking;
grade G: lever lock or latch; automatically locking;
grade H: lever lock or latch; manually locking with intermediate locking;
grade L: lock or latch without key operation; manually locking;
grade M:lock without key operation; automatically locking.
Digit 10 Type of spindle operation
Five gradesare identified:-
- grade O: lock without follower
- grade 1: lock with sprung lever or knob
- grade 2: lock with light unsprung lever
- grade 3: lock with heavy unsprung lever
- grade 4: lock with manufacturer's own specification

Note:Thisapplies only to lever locks:cylinders are assessed to BS EN1303:1998
·Example
This indicates a mechanically operated lock and locking plate intended for use in situations where there is an incentive to excercise care; that will withstand a durability of 200.000 cycles with a 10N side load on the latch bolt on a door of up to 2 0 0 ~ \mathsf {kg } in mass; that will close with a maximum force of 25N; that is suitable for use on a fire/smoke resisting door; that has no safety requirement; that has moderate corrosion resistance overa temperature range of -20 to + 8 0 ^ { \circ } ; that has high security and drill resistance; that is alever mortise lock with manual locking; that is suitable for unsprung furniture; and that has five detaining elements with a minimum of 10.000 differs.

Digit 1 Category of use
Forall internal and external doors for use by the public and others,with little incentive to take care,i.e.where there is some chance of misuse of the door. - grade3:For closing doors from at least 1 0 5 ^ { \circ } open - grade 4:Forclosing doors from 1 8 0 ^ { \circ } open Note 1:Grade 4 classification assumes standard installation according to the manufacturer's instructions. Note 2:For applications subject to extremes of abuse, orforparticular limitations of openingangle,door closers incorporating a backcheck function or provision ofaseparate doorstop should be considered.
Digit2
Number of test cycles
Onlyone test duration is identified for door closers
manufactured to thisstandard:
- grade 8: 500 000 test cycles
Digit3
Test doormass/size
Seven test doormass gradesand related doorcloserpower sizesare identified according to table1of this standard. Where a door closer provides a range of power sizes both the minimumand the maximum sizesshall be identified. Table1
| Doorcloser power size | Recommended door leaf width max. | Test doormass |
| mm | kg | |
| 1 2 | 20 40 | |
| 3 | 950 | 60 |
| 4 | 1100 | 80 |
| 5 | 1250 | 100 |
| 6 | 1400 | 120 |
| 7 | 1600 | 160 |
Note 1: The door widths given are for standard installations. In the case of unusually high or heavy doors, windy or draughty conditions, or special installations, a larger power size of door closer should be used.
Note2:The test doormassesshownareonlyrelated todoor closer power sizes for the purpose of the test procedure.These test door massesare not intended to indicate maximum values for actual use.
Digit 4
Fire behaviour
Two grades of fire behaviour are identified for door closingdevices manufactured to this standard: - grade O:Not suitable for use on fire/smoke door assemblies - grade 1:Suitable for use on fire/smoke door assemblies, subject tosatisfactoryassessment of thecontribution of the door closer to the fire resistance of specified
fire/smokeassemblies.Suchassessmentisoutsidethe scopeof thisEuropeanStandard (SeeEN1634-1).
Digit5 Safety
All doorclosersarerequiredtosatisfythe Essential Requirement of safety in use.Therefore only grade 1 is identified.
Digit 6
Corrosion resistance
Five grades of corrosion resistance are identified according to EN1670:
- grade O:No defined corrosion resistance
- grade 1: Mild resistance
- grade2:Moderate resistance
- grade 3: High resistance
- grade4:Very high resistance
·EXAMPLE:

A door mustbeeasyforoccupants ofthe building toopen,particularlywhere thereare large numbers ofold,young or infirm people.When used inconjunction withalatcheddoorassembly,there is no need for the closerto exert any greater force thanthatrequired toovercome the latchandanyseals.If,however,theforceisonlymarginaly inexcessof thatrequiredtoovercomethelatchresistanceandanyseals,thenreasonablyhigh levelsofmaintenancewillberequired to ensure thatthe latch/sealresistance does not overcome the closer force.When considering the spring pressure,the anticipated degree of maintenance should also be taken into account.
Door closing devices which incorporate spring pressureadjustment provide avery useful way of adjusting the closing forceoninstalation tosuit theparticularsiteconditions encountered.Theadjustmentshould,however,beused with care,bearing inmind the needs ofadequate closing force and the efects on the user.Smokeseals cansometimes preventthedoorcloserfrom fulyclosing thedoor,considerable forcebeing requiredtodeflectorcompresstheseal, particularlyif theyarenotcorrectly instaledandmaintained.Verycarefulconsiderationshouldbegiven tothese issues whenspecifying closing controlstoensure thatextraspring strength is notappliedjusttoovercomepoorsealeffciency.
BSEN1154 states thatdoorclosersof less than powersize3are notconsideredsuitableforfiredoorsdueto their low closing moments,especially at 9 0 ^ { \circ } . It requires that power adjustable closers should be capable of adjustment to at least power size 3.
BSEN1154permitsdelayedactioncloserstobeusedonfire-resistingdoorsets,butitis importantthatanydelayset is no more than that required for its use (e.g.fortheease of elderlyor disabled persons)and is never more than 25 seconds.
