When you choose Victoria University (VU), you choose a university that boldly embraces a
new way of learning. Here are four reasons to get excited about starting your course at VU.
VU Block Model: the smarter way to study
Inspired by proven success in universities across Canada, the
USA and Sweden, we introduced a smarter, more engaging way
to study, that sets you up for success in learning and in your
career – the VU Block Model. With the VU Block Model, you
focus on one or two subjects at a time. Learning in interactive,
workshop-style classes, you get to know your classmates
and teacher, apply your knowledge to real-world scenarios,
and receive timely feedback.
Industry-based learning
We have thousands of industry connections and partnerships
across teaching and research. Our courses are designed in
consultation with industry leaders so that you develop the
skills that employers are looking for. There are an exciting
range of placement and internship opportunities where you
will gain experience and the confidence to set you up for career
success. In 2021, VU and VU Polytechnic students participated
in more than 19,700 placements, facilitated by our Work
Integrated Learning program. We’re also bringing industry
partners onto campus, so you can deepen your connections
with industry as part of your course.

As a VU student you will have the opportunity to get involved
in transformative projects in the west of Melbourne and
beyond – and contribute to our shared future. And, when you

Study your way: pathways between
courses
There’s more than one way to succeed in your career, and
VU provides multiple ways for you to achieve a world-class
education. VU is one of only six universities in Australia
to offer courses in both TAFE and higher education. From
certificates to diplomas, degrees and postgraduate courses,
you can begin your studies and pathway between courses to
achieve your goals. Completing a TAFE course can help you
enter the workforce sooner and provide you opportunities to
complete further studies while you are working, earning while

“The remarkable results highlight the impact that VU’s multi-award
winning Block Model of teaching and learning, combined with VU’s
other Australian-first innovations, is having on the job-readiness of
its graduates.”
NO.1 FOR EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS
Employers have ranked graduates of Victoria University (VU) as having
the most employable skills in Australia, according to the country’s most

Experience a smarter, more engaging way to study with the VU Block Model, where you
focus on one or two subjects at a time. Inspired by similar models across North America
and Europe, the award-winning VU Block Model is a proven success with students,
educators and employers.
HOW IT WORKS
Instead of juggling multiple subjects (units) at the same time, at VU you complete one subject at a time over a four week ‘block’,
usually with three, three-hour classes per week. Typically, you finish your block on a Friday and receive your results on the
following Monday, meaning you can move into your next block with a sense of achievement. Some postgraduate courses are
offered with two subjects studied at a time over an eight-week period, allowing for deep, focused learning,

WHY IT’S SMARTER
Interactive, Connected and Collaborative
At VU, we’ve waved goodbye to lecture theatres. Instead,
you’ll learn in interactive, workshop-style classes — where
teachers know you and you know your classmates. Each class,
you’ll collaborate, put theory into practice with real-world
scenarios, and get timely feedback on your assessments. It’s a
more connected and engaging way to learn. Students agree —
ranking VU number one in Victoria for learning engagement.^
Develop Critical Problem-Solving Skills
The VU Block Model’s focus on developing problemsolving skills in real-world applications, and the ability
to work collaboratively in teams, better prepares you for
the workplace. Australian employers agree — ranking VU
graduates number one in Australia for employability skills
for a second year.*
Focused Timetabling = More Free Time
The focused timetabling of the VU Block Model means
you have more time for work, socialising, sport, caring
responsibilities, and everything else that’s important
to you.
First Year College
VU is the only university in Australia to have a First Year
College for undergraduate students. Staffed by specialist
subject matter experts and educators, the First Year College
is focused on helping you make an easy transition from high
school or work into life as a university student, setting you up
to succeed and excel in your studies and career.
How does First Year College work? The College is set
up as a close-knit, multidisciplinary team of specialist
educators who work collaboratively to design and implement
coursework that is engaging, authentic and focused on your
future success at university. Because they work in a crossfunctional College, they get to know you more closely and
make sure you have exactly what you need to get where
you want to go to reach your aspirations.

2. AUSTRALIA'S BEST STUDENT CITY
Melbourne is the best student city in Australia and the fifth-best student
city in the world, according to the QS Best Student Cities 2023. It is a
vibrant, multicultural city and home to one of the world’s most diverse
student communities. Melbourne is full of the attractions that make the
Australian lifestyle so appealing – beautiful beaches, friendly people and a
fair proportion of sunny days!
Melbourne is renowned for its great restaurant and café options, and its
beautiful parks and boulevards. It is also one of the safest cities in the
world (Economist Intelligence Unit Safe Cities Index 2021) as well as the
friendliest city in the world (William Russell, World’s Friendliest Cities 2022).
1. EXTENSIVE PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Melbourne has an excellent public transport network
that makes it safe, easy and affordable for students
to travel to campus, work and around the city. All VU
campuses are a short walk from public transport and
our city campus operates within Melbourne’s Free
Tram Zone. Melbourne has extensive tram and train
networks that stretch across the city. Flagstaff Station

STUDENT SUCCESS
STORIES
PIR – INDONESIA
Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated)
TOOLSIKA – MAURITIUS
Bachelor of Psychology/Bachelor of Criminal Justice
Pir’s passion to drive sustainable tourism in Indonesia brought him to VU,
where he has achieved more than he ever thought possible. Pir chose to study
at VU for many reasons, one being that VU’s tourism research program is one
of the best in the world.
“I am so proud to be a part of one of VU’s research teams because it consists of
such high-ranking scholars and academics, three of whom are my supervisors.
VU provides a very high-class library which enables me to delve deep into
a substantial number of academic journals and articles. Also, there is a
dedicated PhD student office that makes the life of doctoral students here so
different compared to colleagues in my hometown.”
When Toolsika decided to move from Mauritius, she was keen to find a
university that would help her adjust to life in Australia. At VU, she found a
course that accommodates her two passions, justice and psychology, and a uni
that feels like a home away from home.
“I found the Bachelor of Criminal Justice and Psychological Studies at VU,
which accommodates my two passions. This course gives me the option to
either pursue a career that combines psychology and justice or follow the field
that interests me the most. VU focuses on practice as well as theory, which
is crucial to me studying human behaviour and psychology; and will best
prepare me for my life and career.”
Home to Australia's most employable graduates, VU is also the third-highest ranked university
in Australia for Learner Engagement (2020 QILT Student Experience Survey). This survey
demonstrates how satisfied current students are with their experience. Here is a snapshot of
our latest student and alumni successes.

ROBIN – KENYA
Master of Engineering
AVERY – MALAYSIA
Master of Sport Business
TIEN – VIETNAM
Doctor of Philosophy
When Robin decided to expand on his engineering expertise, he was drawn
to further studies in renewable energy, and to a university with a global
reputation.
“Victoria University appealed to me because of its reputation as a top 2%
global institution, and when I searched LinkedIn, I was impressed with the
careers of VU graduates in my field. VU’s ethos as welcoming and diverse also
attracted me.
It is also one of the only universities in Australia to offer the Master of
Engineering in Power Engineering, with a focus on renewable energy.”
With a passion for sports and an undergraduate degree in international
business from her home country of Malaysia, Avery chose VU for its reputation
as a leading sports university in Australia’s sporting capital.
“I decided I wanted to live in Melbourne because it’s one of the best sports
cities in the world, and whenever I searched the internet for sports universities
in Melbourne, VU kept coming up.
The people they bring in to teach us are leaders in the field and the knowledge
they give us is second to none. I don’t think I’d have that opportunity anywhere
else in the world, to be honest.”
Tien pivoted from a career in tourism to a Doctor of Philosophy at Victoria
University (VU) on cruise tourism in Ho Chi Minh City. Not only has her PhD
given Tien a new way to explore her passion for tourism, but it has also
provided her with an opportunity to develop the tourism industry in her home
country through research.
“I think my PhD course is a special stage in life that is helping me to explore and
develop myself. Like other higher degree by research (HDR) students, I have
experienced some challenges during my PhD. However, after these challenges,
the lesson that I’ve learned is if I fall down seven times, I’ll get up eight.”

Popular Admissions Pathways to
Postgraduate Teaching and Education
Degrees
If you have a bachelor degree from any discipline, you may
choose to apply to enter the Master of Teaching (Primary
or Secondary Education) or the Graduate Diploma in Early
Childhood Education.
VU’s Bachelor of Education Studies provides a pathway into
the Master of Teaching (Primary or Secondary Education), and
the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education is a pathway into
the Master of Teaching (Primary Education). The Graduate
Diploma in Early Childhood Education also offers a pathway
into the Master of Education.
Credit
Credit for prior study reduces the length of your course and
allows you to graduate sooner, by recognising your previous
learning outcomes and qualifications. Many guaranteed
pathways and popular admissions pathways provide
credits towards other diplomas and degrees where learning
outcomes match.
How Credit Works
Most units (subjects) equal 12 credit points. Studying fulltime, you will complete between 3–4 units per semester.
48 credit points is equivalent to one semester, and 96 credit
points is equivalent to a year full-time study. Most bachelor
degrees are three to four years of equivalent full-time study.
Credit Calculator
Use our credit calculator to find out what
credits you may be eligible to receive
towards completion of your course.
Don’t worry if your prior studies are not
listed in the calculator — apply to have your
credit assessed and you might be the first.
