A similar giltwood console table, dated as 18th century and later, was offered at part of the Collecting Arcadia:The Collections from Gatewick and Trethill House auction held by Dreweatts 1759 on 16th October 2024.
Other tables of a similar form, and known to be by William Kent, can be found at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, and in the National Trust Collection at HatchlandsPark, Surrey.
The eagle motif probably derives from Ovid's Metamorphoses where Ganymede is carried away by an eagle to serve Jupiter. Its use as a design feature is popularly believed to have been developed by Wiliam Kent in the 1720s and has been used by furniture designers and makers ever since.
