Filigree work (leisi), an ancient Chinese metalworking technique that represents the pinnacle of precision. The process involves drawing
silver or gold into threads, twisting them into braids or latticework, then soldering them onto a base. Three-dimensional filigree requires the
duihui technique: a mold is formed from charcoal powder and orchid-root mucilage paste, sculpted into the desired shape. Filigree threads are
soldered onto this mold before firing dissolves the core, leaving hollow openwork.
This lantern features a silver-gilt filigree body inlaid with gemstones. Four sides and the domed top are set with exceptionally large Ming
Dynasty white jade panels carved with five-clawed dragons: three frontal dragons (zhenglong) and two profile dragons (xinglong), arranged in
the imperial “Nine-Five” configuration. A white jade column connects the body to a gemstone-encrusted base. One smaller side panel opens to
reveal paired jade slabs carved with “萬” (wan) and “年” (nian) amid peony and lingzhi motifs (auspicious fortune), while another panel depicts
bats and ruyi clouds above waves (blessings and longevity). The jade panels’ dimensions far exceed typical Ming standards with a prominent
domed top (Ø 11.8 cm) and large side panels (11.8 × 14.4 cm and 10.1 × 11.3 cm).Typical Ming jade dragon panels measure 4-8 cm in width/
diameter. Created during the Qianlong era – a period of fascination with reworking ancient jade and Indo-Islamic aesthetics – assembling five
stylistically matched dragon panels would have required Imperial Workshop (Zaobanchu) resources.

This masterpiece features a zitan wood base carved as the Circular Mound Altar of Beijing’s Temple of Heaven. Each tier displays intricately carved
“brickwork” bases with gilded bronze balustrades and handrails adorned with chased floral motifs. Staircases are flanked by paired dragons,
phoenixes, and auspicious clouds, while dragon-head waterspouts emerge from the first two levels—meticulously replicating the Qinian Hall’s
altar complex. At its center stands a nine-tiered pavilion pagoda carved from vibrant spinach-green jadeite, mounted on a stepped jadeite plinth. A
glass neon tube runs through the pagoda, connecting it to the wooden base. The whole set contains four tiers of a total of 30+ miniature treasures
that rest on custom wood stands engraved with identifiers and positions, accompanied by a placement diagram. The set is housed in four-tiered
brocade boxes lined with purple silk, each compartment molded to fit specific items and embroidered with imperial dragon-roundels.
Carved from rare imperial-green jadeite with gossamer veins (historically termed “gold-thread jadeite”), this set echoes the legendary pagoda
created by jade master Zhang Wendi. Zhang’s 1.27-meter masterpiece—carved by 150 artisans from a single “Jade King” boulder—featured
a white-jade Taihe Hall base and chain-linked jadeite towers, later displayed at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair (now in the Lizzadro Collection).
Though smaller in scale, this pagoda set matches Zhang’s work in craftsmanship and conceptual ambition, likely originating from the same circle
of master carvers. Its survival with complete accessories—unseen on the market for decades—marks an exceptional rediscovery.

A Chinese pagoda in archaistic ‘bogu’ style with jadeite adornments
Republic period
Featuring a multi-tiered pagoda at its center, meticulously carved from pale green jadeite. Surrounding the pagoda is a circular wooden terrace
with layered platforms and radiating staircases, adorned with miniature jade vessels, mythical beasts, cranes, and ritual objects arranged
according to antiquarian display principles. The intricate architectural setting includes gilt-metal railings and bridges with incised dragon and
cloud motifs, all elevated on a circular hardwood base. The entire ensemble is preserved with two original silk brocade storage boxes, complete
with labeled drawers and a layout guide indicating the precise placement of each miniature.

This square-form chest features truncated corners, straight
walls tapering toward a low ring foot. Exterior surfaces are
decorated in vibrant cobalt blue: the rim with continuous
fretwork, below which runs a band of ruyi heads. Each side
showcases dense interlocking lotus scrolls encircling a central
chilong dragon medallion enclosing a longevity character
(shou), symbolizing “boundless longevity” (wanshou wujiang).
The base is adorned with stylized lotus petals enclosing floral
sprigs. The hinged domed cover—composed of two panels—
bears fretwork borders and interlocking lotus motifs. Each
panel is pierced with two coin-shaped apertures surrounded by
‘ice-crack’ prunus blossoms. Evolving from ancient bronze jian
water vessels, Qing dynasty ice chests were primarily crafted
from wood or porcelain. Their complex production limited
distribution to imperial and elite households, making surviving
examples exceptionally rare. This piece exemplifies 19thcentury imperial craftsmanship: pristine glaze, vibrant cobalt
with nuanced tonal gradations, and remarkable preservation—
including the original cover.
